Ubah Hassan had a wild year in 2008. After moving to Canada with her father in 1997, she began modeling, but quit for a while to please her father (he hated the long hours) and opened a café. But her dream was too big and, luckily, she started modeling again, working with Steven Meisel for the all black issue of Italian Vogue. Then, she met Ralph Lauren and became the face of the ad campaign. “I wasn’t expecting [Ralph] to be sitting in front of me!,” she said of the casting experience. “I felt like I was getting a green card. He goes, ‘You have the most beautiful face.’” Ubah sat with Iman to film this video and discuss the issues of black models on the runway at Iman Cosmetics, chatting about what Iman calls “the Bethann [Hardison] effect” on fashion, how Ubah focused on her career rather noticing the issues on the runway, and how it feels when designers state they’re not using black models that season. “Like it’s a category—like we’re not doing denim this season,” said Iman. “It’s very upsetting.” Ubah replied, “If I was a designer, I would want a black girl on the runway. We look good in any color you put us in.”
