Ahoy There Matey! Nautical Numbers
One trend that seems to be taking sail down my high street is the nautical trend. You name it, anchor prints, hues in navy blues, sailor dresses and canvas shoes; nautical chic is here to stay!Normally I wouldn’t have batted my fashion obsessed eyes at this so-called fad, since it’s all rather predictable. Come spring and summer - you just know it will be back on the pages of all the glossies, being declared as the hottest trend of the season.
However I recently caught up on a bunch of movies I’d missed at the cinema; Sweeney Todd being one of them. (Yes, I do gleam style tips from just about everywhere, that includes movies about psychopathic barbers hell-bent on revenge)
So where was I? Yes in Sweeney Todd, there’s a lovely and incredibly beautiful scene where the two protagonists take a trip to the beach (as demonstrated in the picture below)

I’ll admit Johnny does looks like he might not be embracing all things beachside, take a look at what Helena is wearing! It sums up just about everything I love about this nautical trend. It’s fun, a little theatrical and colourful in a tasteful way.
It might look a like way too much for us mere mortals, but don’t worry about that. You can take a few simple key pieces to brighten up any dull outfit. Here are a few choice pieces that might take your fancy.
If you want to avoid wearing a nautical number from head to toe, why not opt for an accessory instead? Like this cute tote bag from everyone’s favourite high street haunt, Primark!

For your more formal occasions, you can still cheer on the nautical spirit with this sweetheart leather vintage day bag from ASOS.com. It’s has a beautiful deep red sheen with gorgeous details, such as the removal vintage scarf and simple gold clasp.

If none of those tickle your fancy, why not try bringing in a new texture to your outfit? Introduce a woven texture like straw to really stand out. This fan shaped bag is perfect for the job!

I’m not sure why stripes are associated with sailors, but they are! So think stripes in black, white, red and blue, like this top from Marc by Marc Jacobs.

TIP! - If Marc Jacobs is a bit expensive, then head over to Topshop as there are many similar designs there.
TIP! Keep it simple, by teaming it with a pair of jeans or cropped shorts to complete the sunny seaside look.
Or how about wearing it with these nautical wide leg jeans from Oasis? They’re the perfect silhouette to slim down short stumpy legs.

But what goes on your feet?
You can opt for casual canvas shoes like these white ones pointed ones from Converse.

Or go for simply chic with scarlet open toed sling backs!

For higher end brands, peruse the look book of Paul and Joe Sister. They’ve inspired many an imitation, so make sure you do you homework and look at the originals.
I adore their Moineu Tunic for the little embroidery details at the hem.

If you really want to go completely naughty with the nautical, then their Sauge dress should do the trick! It has blue and cream stripes with a rope collar detail, and comes in a sleek silhouette which is cinched in right at the waist. Those with heavy thighs beware, as the cut is thigh-skimming and terribly unforgiving.

But at any rate, you’ll be sure to shiver a few timbers in this nautical number. So go for it.
