Anything cocked or loaded I am always, officially and unhesitatingly on board for, so when David Barton Gym told me they had the tickets to my very own GUNS show, how could I resist?!

Annie, Get Your GUNS!

We’ve already shared some helpful hints on how to hide and shape up your arms for this already gorgeous spring weather, but those maxi dresses and sleeveless tanks are practically yelling your name. So if you want to go the extra mile, inspire envy and maybe even a little hatred among friends, co-workers and peers or just need to choke out a bear at anytime in the near future, David Barton’s GUNS class is for you.

Annie, Get Your GUNS!

Walking into David Barton at Astor Place, I was feeling rather confident. Since surviving my last workout at the Chelsea location, I felt I could totally handle GUNS, especially since it was only 30 minutes long. But I should’ve known better…

The Astor location is even bigger, better and badder than Chelsea. I mean, there’s a DJ spinning music in a giant disco ball. (Sidebar: no joke, when I die I want my ashes spread between there and Anna Wintour‘s office at Vogue.) And GUNS lived up to its grand surroundings with 30 minutes of intense lifting, curling, extending and push-upping that left my photographer Chris and I puffing and panting in a pool of our own sweat (more he than I, I’d like to point out).

But yet again, we survived! And after a day or two, lifting a glass of vodka to my lips didn’t hurt anymore. What’s even better, I got some great tips from David himself on how best to go about toning and shaping those GUNS for the spring:

1. How can ladies tone up their arms without getting “bulky”? Drop the feed-bag. Fat makes you bulky, but lifting weights builds lean muscle.

2. In addition to weights, are there any workouts that are particularly good for arm training? Push ups, bands and cables.

3. How many times per week do you recommend working out? 50 if possible.

I don’t know about you, but working out 50 times a week would probably interrupt my very busy schedule…of drinking, but I took that to mean to just work out as much as you can.

And of course when working out, don’t forget to also work it out.
