But the shoes, THE SHOES, have nearly thrown us backwards right out of our chairs. Look closely inside those Plexiglas heels, and you’ll notice they are filled with sand. Though much chicer, it brings to mind craft projects of yore – a sentimental and all around extraordinary idea. Not to mention the thick color blocked leather and metal plate detail adds to the wonderment below the ankles. Click for the gallery after the jump.

<span

I smell Oscar dresses. It’s no surprise Reem Acra showed some of the most beautifully beaded gowns I’ve seen all week for Fall 2012, but the rest of the collection was just as interesting. Ladylike suits woven with metallic threads were accessorized with chic matching luggage. Leather pieces in black, burgundy and forest green demonstrated Acra’s affinity for impeccably tailored, sophisticated and body-conscious design. Thigh high slits, cutouts and sheer panels drove the evening wear to another level of red carpet worthiness. It’s guaranteed whoever wears Fall 2012 Acra during awards season will land on the best dressed list. If the dress fits properly of course.

<span

Show attendees walked down the sloping hill to Wollman Rink in Central Park where hot rum ciders and roasted chestnuts awaited us before the show began. The rink, surround by trees set aglow by brilliantly colored lights, soon filled with the sights of figure skaters and sounds of The Harlem Boys Choir belting out Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, all dressed in Moncler. The numbers that followed were truly spectacular, and you can watch them all right here.

<span

Along two leafy backdrops, models stood on white platforms wearing 20 looks from the designer, and it’s easy to see that Cioci knows how young women want to dress. In both the tailored and more flowing pieces, the mood was all about the power of femininity: ruffles and pleats to subtly accentuate curves in all the right places, cutouts and sheer panels perfectly placed around erogenous zones. Practical yet incredibly gorgeous fur pieces reinforced her luxurious yet wearable line mentality.

<span

After not showing a spring 2012 collection, I wondered about the fate of the Parisian New Yorker. But it seems the brand is very alive and very well after seeing the Fall/Winter 2012 collection this morning. Fierce and mysterious, the Malandrino woman is a lady by day in cashmere and silk crepe. But by night, a seductive creature of the dark emerges, bound in leather and embellished tulle, wrapped in luxurious fox furs of electric hues. Spring woes undeniably aside, Malandrino may have shown her best collection yet.

<span

The Joseph Abboud man knows of this sensibility and has for a very long time. For his first runway show in seven years, creative director Bernardo Rojo looked back to a great era in American design and created his Fall/Winter 2012 collection for a modern version of the 1930s sharp-witted rogue. Bulldog gin martinis were followed by five beautiful dishes by executive chef Vivek Singh and copious amounts of wine. Among my favorite bites were bombay spiced vegetables with cumin and truffle ‘pao’ and clove smoked saddle of lamb with onion and ginger sauce. I almost dove into the ginger toffee pudding with cinnamon ice cream face first it was so delicious. Click through to see photos from the experience.

<span

But here to remind us we don’t have to drown in our man-hating sorrows is Amber Madison, author of the new book Are All Guys Assholes? After traveling around the country and interviewing more than 1,000 guys about sex, love and dating, she discovered guys aren’t nearly as bad as we might think. Here’s her evidence.

1. 73% of guys said their primary interest in women is to find someone to have a relationship with. That’s right, guys are out there hunting for girlfriends, not just pieces of ass.

2. Guys aren’t “biologically driven to spread their seed.” The theories we always read about how science makes guys act like dicks are actually just theories, meaning they cant be proven. Evidence against this one: only 8% of guys said their primary interest in women is sex.

3. Guys care about looks way LESS than you might think. They consistently rated intelligence, sense of humor and being nice/caring as more important.

4. We’re not the only ones freaking out a little bit before a date. On a scale from 1-10, guys rated their average pre-date nervousness a 4.

5. When guys get turned off on a date, it’s because they sensed bad conversation (34%), bad manners (16%) or a bad attitude (35%). It’s not because you didn’t wear your fuck-me pumps.

6. In-between dates, a guy who likes you wants to hear from you. Only 2% said they wanted to be the ones always initiating contact.

7. 99% of guys said they’d want to be in a relationship if the right girl came along. Dating a guy who says he’s not ready to commit? Don’t excuse this as “guy behavior,” cut him loose and go find a better one.

Truth is, there are plenty of relationship-minded single guys out there wishing they were spending this holiday with you! So get out there and meet them. And after you do, run them through Amber’s iPhone App, A-Hole Tester, and make sure they pass. But behind the Oscar nod for Best Picture (among many other nominations it has received) is that killer fashion from the 1920s — flapper, avant garde, art deco glam. And The Artist isn’t alone – think about how Midnight in Paris, Boardwalk Empire and soon enough The Great Gatsby are full of 1920s fashion glam. Here are a few ways to channel it.

<span

With so many products and skin care regimens floating around in the beauty world, it’s difficult to find a routine and formula that works best for you. Lucky for you, we caught up with skincare expert Cecilia Wong - a well-being guru who founded both a skincare line and salon in NYC – to rack her brain about how organic products can make all the difference when it comes to a daily regimen. Follow her 7-Day Guide to Glowing Skin, and you may not even recognize yourself you’ll look so radiant.

<span

Juicing helps cleanse toxins from the body and skin, so find a recipe, head to the store, buy fresh fruits and vegetables, juice them and drink up! By Fashion Week your skin will glow. My favorite recipe is: 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of blackberries, an apple, a slice of ginger, handful of spinach, 1 cup of kale, 1 beet, honey (if needed to sweeten), crushed ice, add water or raw cranberry juice after blended.

5 days before: Hydrate those cells! Before bedtime, apply a hydrating, vitamin-rich mask. It’ll give your skin an extra boost of vitamins and nutrients, integral components to beautiful skin. Select a natural (organic, if possible!) mask, cleanse skin and apply to face, avoiding eyes and lips. Leave on until dry, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Don’t forget to use a facial oil and moisturizer afterwards.

Hanging Out for the Girlcore Book Launch

CULTURE

bjork

catrin davies

ginger spice

girlcore magazine

LOOKBOOKS

orange dot gallery

patti smith

peaches

take that

the spice girls

union jack teatowel dress

virginia woolf
<guid

Check out her musings below.

It’s hard to write about London, girls and empowerment without wanting to break out the Union Jack teatowel dress. But it’s not the 90s, and I’m definitely not Ginger Spice, so last night I exorcised a few teenage demons by popping by the launch party for Girlcore‘s new book and exhibition at the Orange Dot Gallery.

For the uninitiated, Girlcore is the kind of project I wish had been around when I was 16, kicking about with my hair twisted into a poor imitation of Bjorks’ and consoling my best friends over the break-up of Take That. It’s an online and real-life community of like-minded girls who provide a showcase for other like-minded girls working in the creative industry, in the kind of supportive, mutually inclusive environment that makes me want to put on a Patti Smith record. The online portfolio of works from photographers and illustrators is an inspiring collection; it’s genuinely a club you might want to belong to. And nobody is screaming BLOODY FEMINISTS at them… and it doesn’t scare off the boys either. I know because I saw some last night.

The girls behind the Girlcore concept started out as friends still high on festival vibes who wanted to recreate their summer of love in the form of a London club night. Using their network of DJ and promoter friends, they started to build this mini-empire which was all about pushing forward their equality as talented female mates. From there grew the website, the online portfolio and now this book and exhibition which kind of solidifies the Girlcore identity. The influences and role models are varied, old and new; they’re Peaches and they’re Virginia Woolf and everyone in-between who has ever inspired anyone to do something creative.

Girlcore Magazine runs at the Orange Dot Gallery in London until February 27th. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I dug deep into my jewelry arsenal to pull out my favorite hearts, which I “heart.” These pieces all have a deep meaning and sentimental value. My advice is to always wear your heart on your sleeve as well as around your neck. After all, when you don a piece you hold near and dear, it helps you shine and sparkle even more!

<a

She always called me her “heart.” I usually wear it with shorter, layered diamond necklaces. Multiplying sparkle and shine during the day works, as long as it’s with delicate pieces.

- I have collected heart charms since I was a little girl. These are from my Mom, Aunt, Dad and a flea market. I will string them on a thin chain to wear in a cluster all at once for a bold look.

- This engraved gold heard belonged to my Great Grandmother. Her birthday is marked with a tiny diamond on the front. I have never seen another piece quite like this. Its unique design with intricate detail make this one of my favorite heirlooms (p.s. – it has a pin back as well).

- One of my favorite movies of ALL TIME, is Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead. I had this quote etched on a heart on a long chain. It’s fun – and so me!

Article by Bluefly at

This peek at the top five collections casts a spotlight on the most au courant accessories. Proenza Schouler and Prada both look to midcentury Americana, invoking the smoldering glamour of 1940s California and summery, slightly cheeky 1950s Southern California, respectively. With Louis Vuitton, sugar sweetness is superbold. Céline creates streamlined cool with androgyny and minimalism, and Jil Sander explores all of the nuances and complications of femininity. Born in Manchester, England, the designer moved to the states when she was 12 years old, her father taking a professor of Anthropology position and her mother working as a sculptor. With creative thinking in her blood, Ainsley started to design in-sync with the social happenings around her. Though she is inspired by hardship like war and global warming, her designs are flowing and timeless. Both practical and self-expressive, Ainsley’s collections are for the modern, cultured woman through and through. Check out her Fall 2012 teaser video below.

<iframe

Check out the gallery of weirdly cool portraits below.

If there’s anything that separates a celebrity from the proletariat, its his or her ability to turn on the megawatt smile at the mere suggestion of a flash bulb. Artist Stuart Pearson Wright has built a small exhibition of portraits around the idea of capturing this automated response and the ensuing awkwardness and ambiguity that results in simply asking people to say cheese.

With a lick of faux-Hollywood gloss about them, his subjects are grinning and bearing it in a kind of toothsome, medicated trance which horribly reminds me of Britney Spears, mid-breakdown. Wright’s female subjects are all tits, teeth and blow-dried hair so its a relief to move on to his smaller exhibition of tattoo portraits, where people seem much happier, you know, just getting their tats out. Wright selected subjects according to old school stereotypes; the circus strongman, the tattooed lady, the side-show freak…And they seem much more content than the freaks in frames on the opposite wall. But on the way out of the gallery, you have to pass those weird rictus grins again, with their airbrushed FUN TIMES smiles and surfaces dusted with real diamonds.
