What is your #1 eco tip?
Be curious. Your new t-shirt presumably collected more airline miles than you, so ask yourself, “does this make the shirt better?” Wonder why someone in Asia needs to work with wool from South America on something you buy in Europe. You will quickly realize there are strange things going on. If you want to change something, curiosity is the starting point.

How do you incorporate eco-consciousness into your style?
In general, we try to by aware about who manufactured a product and where. So many textile and clothing companies have outsourced their manufacturing processes to countries like China, Sri Lanka or Cambodia because labor is cheap. There is nothing wrong with producing in these places, but companies must engage in fair trade and make sure their laborers are working under humane and favorable conditions.

In our daily lives, we shop locally because it not only helps local artists and producers in need of business and gives us the chance to get in touch with the people and the story behind a product, but it also reduces traffic, smog and other pesky disturbances that come from trucking goods across the world.

At Cielbleu, despite the fact we don’t like that everything is labeled eco these days, we try to be sustainable to the core. We want you to love our handmade cashmere goods because of the way it feels on your skin and the way it looks while you‘re wearing it – not just because it’s labeled as green. We want to give you a piece of clothing you can keep, treasure and not even think of throwing away.

What are some easy ways to incorporate more eco-consciousness into our busy city lives?
We try to calm down and become more relaxed about eco. While we’re buzzing around, we get flooded with advice on how we should live, what we should do and where we should buy. There’s a group of experts for everything, often just a click away, so it’s easy to jump on someone else’s opinion. Instead, we should relearn to use our own brain. If we’re curious, inquisitive and leery, we will realize there are far more reasons for “being green” than for the contrary.

Victoria’s Secret | Facebook —The lingerie and women’s fashion retailer has attained 17 million Facebook likes, one of only four fashion franchises (along with Burberry, Gucci, and Dior) to pass the 5 million mark. Their almost-overkill Facebook presence also offers customizable page tabs and rewards for active ‘fans’, such as free ‘like this’ panties. Victoria’s Secret also wages aggressive YouTube and Twitter presences. On Twitter the brand is very active with it’s “Pink” brand extension and is a case study in using Twitter as an interactive brand-friendly conversation. Not surprisingly, Victoria’s Secret has also been very innovative in promoting their webpage through QR codes.

Levi’s | Instagram—The American clothing company known for its denim jeans has made a social media stir recently for utilizing the hip photo-sharing app Instagram. By encouraging users to upload images of themselves wearing their garments, tagged with an #iamlevis hashtag, Levi’s seems eager to tap into tech-savvy fashion niche that typifies a massive and diverse hipster demographic. It’s a laudable effort to combine social media, crowdsourcing, PR, and online branding.

Marc Jacobs | Foursquare—The influential American fashion designer, who was listed in Time Magazine’s 2010 ‘Most Influential 100 People In The World’, recently spearheaded an innovative Foursquare campaign that offered fans “Fashion Victim” badges that they could use to get Marc by Marc Jacobs Fashion Week tickets in New York City. Acquiring the badge required fans to follow the trail of tips left at Jacob’s favorite Foursquare hotspots.

New fashion startups | Social Media Frenzy—Not only is fashion one of the more trafficked niches on fashion blogs like Coach, social fashion networks on the rise. Lookbook.nu is a fashion and youth culture website that integrates Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Other similar fashion networks include Chicopia, Fashism, The Coveteur, Rookie, and Moda Operando, all of which seek to connect fashion lovers to hip, vibrant communities of like-minded people and media sources.

For those of us who come from a more fashion-centric background, the speculation about the characters was nothing compared to the possibilities surrounding their dress. Season five takes place only one year later than season four – in 1966 – but that one year reflects tremendous social and stylistic upheavals that were taking place in America at the time. As drugs gained prominence, race relations took to the street, and America careened towards that tumultuous year of 1968, fashion trends began looking less like the 1960s and more like the 1970s. On the show, then, the new season promises its share of shorter skirts, brighter colors, longer eyelashes, and more pronounced jewelry accessories.

And the opening episode, from this perspective, certainly did not disappoint. While viewers weren’t given much in the way of action during the two-hour premier, the fashion of 1966 made itself known in a big way, right away. Here were some of the highlights:

Don’s new wife stole the fashion show with monochrome looks, short skirts, and a range of less conservative hair styles. But it was her sleek black dress at Don’s birthday party that likely caught most of the attention in this episode. Certainly, we would not have seen that in season three.

Both Joan and Megan sported some dressed that would be risqué by Fifties standards, namely by lowering the neckline and opting for tighter skirts. While Joan’s new baby prevents her from displaying her full fashion prowess in the premier, there’s no question that she makes an impression during her “casual” visit to the office.

For the first time during the show’s run, viewers were able to get a glimpse of the decade that sits just around the corner: the ‘70s. This glimpse was perhaps best conveyed by Jane Sterling, Roger’s trophy wife, who was wearing a psychedelic dress, heavy dark makeup, and a side ponytail.

Betty Francis, Don’s ex-wife puzzlingly didn’t make an appearance in the season premiere. As the epitome of the early-60s housewife, Betty’s style hasn’t changed much even as her life lurches forward to the 1970s. Will her wardrobe finally begin to reveal the tumult inside? Will it adapt with the times or remain stuck in the past? These are the deep questions that Mad Men finds us asking about both style and story – questions that we’ll have to wait another week if we want answered.

Know your shape: Anybody who’s been brought up on a diet of Gok Wan and programmes like ‘Ten Years Younger’ will know that the key to looking good is to flatter your own body shape. Instead of spotting a stunning dress in a magazine and then going out and buying it, try to tailor your buying habits around what looks good on you. Pear shapes should choose party dresses which emphasise the waist area and skim over the bottom, whereas apples should draw attention to their legs and bust. If you’re a classic hourglass then you can get away with pretty much anything, including this season’s gorgeous sequinned bodycon dresses.

Shop around: Don’t hit the shops in the hurry and grab the first thing you see – if you’ve got a party coming up then dedicate some time to finding the right outfit. Browsing online is great, but to judge what looks best on you it’s best to hit the high street. Stores such as Next generally have a great range of party dresses for women that won’t cause too much damage to your wallet.

From office to party: Not everybody has the luxury of spending hours getting ready before hitting the town. If you’re going straight from work to a party then you can spice up your office look with a few clever tricks. Adding a pair of killer heels and some jewellery to a pair of leggings and a simple tunic can work wonders, as can wearing a short-sleeved dress under a dark-coloured cardigan. The best way to go from office to party, however, is to change your makeup. You’d be surprised at what a flick of eyeliner and a good lipstick can do.

Consider the occasion: Dressing for a rave is a very different proposition to dressing for a work party where you’ll be meeting boss’s wife. There’s no absolute rule for what you should wear to either event, but always attempt to dress appropriately for the occasion. That skimpy skirt might have looked great on the dance floor last Saturday, but it might not sit in so well at a society wedding.

Update the look: The wedge trend may not have gone out of fashion, but there’s no doubt that the style has morphed somewhat since last year. Adapt your choice of wedge to suit this year’s key fashions, which include marine motifs, bold prints and sorbet colours. You can get the look on the high street, with stores such as Next boasting a range of wedge women’s shoes to rival designer offerings.

When to wear them: The great thing about wedges is that you can wear them pretty much everywhere. They make your legs look longer and thinner, instantly slim thick ankles and are appropriate for every occasion from the beach to a wedding. If you want your wedges to be extra versatile then go for a pair that can be worn with a range of outfits. Those diamante straps might be perfect for clubbing, but for day wear they’re a no-no.

Just add jeans: One of the best ways to wear wedges is to dress them down with your favourite jeans. Wedge shoes look great with skinny jeans, but team them with a loose top if you want to avoid the beanpole look. If you’re keen to work this season’s 70s-inspired trend then you could also match wedges with flared jeans – but the default style to wear with wedges is bootleg.

Scintillate in a skirt: Wedges can give a subtle boost to a casual outfit, but they can also give the ‘wow factor’ to a going out ensemble. By allowing you to opt for skyscraper height without impairing your ability to dance, they have established themselves firmly on the list of desirable going-out wear. Wedge shoes look fantastic with slit-skirts, a la Angelina Jolie, and with mid-lengths.

“In the wind” Making of Video Paul & Joe Paris

I have been asked more times than I can count, if I can share my lighting with photographers
wishing to
understand what I did for a specific image I have done. So I decided to
have one of my shoots which features designers “Paul & Joe” Paris
for their Spring/Summer collection captured on video.

Frédérique Renaut used a Fuji F100 digital 6 mega pixel consumer digital
camera to capture the scenes and quite frankly, I am quite impressed
with the results.

None the less, it will give you an insider view in to one of my shoots where I used a mixed bag of HMI
cinema lights, Tungsten and Flash as well as scrims, flags and other
stuff to achieve my goal.

Saleh. In fact although a very, very long
day, it was a real pleasure working with the whole team.

I was also very pleased with the clothing on offer from “Paul & Joe”
Paris. They worked perfectly for
the theme, except for one change that didn’t work out. Was not as fluid
as I would have liked and the color I chose for the capture didn’t work
with the rest, so we decided to use another clothing change that would
be more in line with the rest of the theme.

Anyways, hope you enjoy this almost as much as I did.

“In the wind” Making of Video Paul & Joe Paris

I have been asked more times than I can count, if I can share my lighting with photographers
wishing to
understand what I did for a specific image I have done. So I decided to
have one of my shoots which features designers “Paul & Joe” Paris
for their Spring/Summer collection captured on video.

Frédérique Renaut used a Fuji F100 digital 6 mega pixel consumer digital
camera to capture the scenes and quite frankly, I am quite impressed
with the results.

None the less, it will give you an insider view in to one of my shoots where I used a mixed bag of HMI
cinema lights, Tungsten and Flash as well as scrims, flags and other
stuff to achieve my goal.

The first two dresses appear as though they were taken from this season’s designer offerings. The first could easily be Marchesa or Carolina Herrera and the second, Vionnet, Halston, or Donna Karan, just to name a few.

This is an impeccable twosome! While both are gorgeous, the first is my favorite….such delicate and painstaking details. Another which would translate well with today’s styles.

This magnificent work of art is my absolute favorite…..it screams Alexander McQueen! When I see dresses such as this, I’m reminded of why I love to watch the old black and white movies of the 20′s and 30′s.

The second dress is beautiful and also appears as one that we might see from today’s designers.

The dress on the right is another delicate and feminine lovely with a Vionnet or Halston Heritage look.

Ah……both are equally lovely. In the two of these, I see Valentino; especially the dress on the right.

The dress on the right is interesting looking, almost as though there is a story attached. In this one I see Anna Sui.

Nice and simple, yet beautiful. I would love to see the outfits without the vests.

These appear as versions of the booties that we wear today….perhaps Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu.

NEW YORK — From a visual of Washington Square Arch framing the entrance to Lenny Kravitz’s “American Song” serving as the soundtrack to the finale photo and video installation of America’s female icons then and now, the Costume Institute’s “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” exhibit feels like a journey through this country’s past through the fashion lens.

In a series of atmospheric oval and circular rooms, the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings to life the different stages of the American female identity, from “The Heiress” in a room inspired by Mrs. Astor’s Newport mansion and garments by Charles Frederick Worth, to “The Gibson Girl” exploring sports in all seasons, and “The Bohemian,” who seems right at home in environs inspired by the Tiffany Studios.

The exhibit strikes a political note in a gallery devoted to “Suffragists” and “Patriots” with actual footage of the movement marches and banners from the era, which is followed by “The Flapper,” which represents the sexual and economic emancipation of women in a skyscraper backdrop loosely inspired by Tamara de Lempicka’s Art Deco paintings, according to curator Andrew Bolton.

Perhaps the most quintessential symbol of America to the world could well be the “Screen Siren.” It features mannequins in glamorous gowns set against screens showing scenes from famous Thirties movies, and including Hollywood icons such as Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford and Rita Hayworth.

Over the decades, much has been made of what is in a fragrance bottle — hope or science? For Mary J. Blige, it’s transformation.

“I wanted my fragrance to be something special for my female fans,” said Blige of her new fragrance with Carol’s Daughter, My Life, named for her landmark 1994 recording of the same name. The album represented a major turning point in Blige’s life and by using it as a reference, she is attempting to encapsulate her decadelong transformation and triumph.

While the My Life scent may be meant to represent everyday life, Blige and Carol’s Daughter are breaking the bonds of traditional prestige fragrance retailing by choosing to launch My Life solely on HSN on July 31. Blige is an investor in Carol’s Daughter, which also is a break with industry practice.

Blige, who worked with Firmenich to create the scent, concedes fragrance development was new to her, but she did have a secret weapon: Pamela Baxter, president and chief executive officer of LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics North America. Blige’s husband and manager, Kendu Isaacs, has an uncle who is married to Baxter, who Blige affectionately calls Aunt Pam.

“We’ve been family for years,” Blige said, before adding about developing a fragrance, “I’ve never done it, but it was so much fun because I have a keen sense of smell. I knew exactly what I wanted and would ask for an incense smell, a musk smell, a wood smell. I also wanted florals, but edgy florals. Every day they would bring me blotters to test — after a while, everything started to smell the same, so I had to pull back.”

Once she got the juice to an early stage, Blige shared it with Baxter. “Aunt Pam came to our house for Christmas during that time, and I said, ‘Pam, I love it, but something’s causing me to hate it.’ What is that smell — there’s too much of it. And Pam said it was wood. I got on the phone right away and said ‘take the wood out!’” Blige said with a laugh.

Baxter noted that Blige is studious about every task she tackles. “She likes to know what she is talking about,” said Baxter. “She is not one to let anyone manage her life. She wants to learn everything from top to bottom.”

Despite the assist from Baxter, Steve Stoute, lead investor in and chairman of Carol’s Daughter, is quick to stress that Blige had free rein to create whatever she wanted to. “No one said to Mary, ‘this is what the industry likes, this is what will sell.’ It was completely Mary’s creation, and she went through six different iterations before it was perfect. And that way, it really has become her fragrance. The endorser becomes the author.”

The scent’s top notes are of gardenia petals, Bartlett pear and white freesia; the heart is of tuberose, blooming jasmine, gold lily and apricot flower, and the drydown is of cashmere woods, praline, sesame and incense. It will retail for $46 for 1.7 oz. and will be sold with a clutch purse.

While some high-profile names are fine with smelling a final scent and cashing a check, Blige isn’t one of them. “I have to be involved,” she said. “Because when your name is attached to something, and it’s not good, that’s your name. So I prefer a good name rather than vanity and riches.

“At the end of the day, it’s for me,” she continued. “So if I look ridiculous and not know what I’m talking about and not know what’s in my own fragrance, it doesn’t look good to people. When I was doing the [public service announcement for her charity, filmed earlier in the day on set] out there, I was saying education is power. That’s what I mean. It is powerful to sit here and talk to you and tell you I know what’s in my fragrance. I was there, putting it together.”

From what’s stated here, it sounds as though this is going to be one of those soft, floral fragrances. It contains two of my favorite elements, Jasmine and gardenia. I’m actually surprised that it’s has taken Mary so long to throw her hat into the ring with regard to fashion or another venture. She is well known for her chic and stylish fashion sense, and I personally thought that she would have developed a clothing line at some point.

I’m sure she didn’t want to just jump into to anything without the necessary research and processes. This very well could be the beginning of things to come, as she has cemented her place as a well loved artist, so I can imagine that the time is right for her to segue into something new. Being a lover of floral scents, I look forward to getting my hands on a bottle!

The Inspiration for this debut collection comes from Japanese Origami paper folding and traditional leather styling. Nerdy glasses are not quite done making their statement in the indie fashion world. The trend was apparent in the 90′s when the Fresh Prince’s, DJ Jazzy Jeff, sported them as he worked the turn tables. Head MC of Digital Underground attached a funny looking, fake, nose to his pair of nerdy glasses, but who knows? Maybe those guys really needed prescription glasses. Wether or not they really needed specs to see their hip hop hits top the charts, the look sure caught on.

Nerd frames made a come back two winter seasons ago and it seems indie trend setters are still riding those thick frames out. With chain apparel stores like Hot Topic and Urban Outfitters carrying the particular style of glasses, it looks as though we won’t be saying “dying trend” for this one just yet. The popular, young, fashion blogger from Paris, Louise Ebel, is rarely seen in a photograph without her pair of nerdy glasses; but as she models them with Miu Miu platform heels, there is no trace of the word nerd left in Louise’s attire.

Although, every now and then, a fresh face surprisingly pulls the look off, it’s best the rest of us stay clear of this trend. Justin Timberlake, Scarlett Johannson, Jay-Z and a number of other celebrities (including Madonna!) have fallen victim to the nerd glasses.

Advice: If your vision is 20/20, you are terribly lucky you don’t need glasses and you should keep it that way. If you don’t have time to pop in your contacts, wearing rectangular, thinner frames or lighter colored frames is not as harsh on the face and looks more modern, less nerdy.
