I actually don’t wear much black and white during the spring and summer months. No particular reason, other than the fact that it has to be something that catches my eye, such as those Trussari 1911 shoes. When I choose to don a little black and white something, I like to accessorize with a touch of color such as turquoise.

If not turquoise, silver earrings and an arm full of silver bangles also fit the bill.

“In the wind” Making of Video Paul & Joe Paris

I have been asked more times than I can count, if I can share my lighting with photographers
wishing to
understand what I did for a specific image I have done. So I decided to
have one of my shoots which features designers “Paul & Joe” Paris
for their Spring/Summer collection captured on video.

Frédérique Renaut used a Fuji F100 digital 6 mega pixel consumer digital
camera to capture the scenes and quite frankly, I am quite impressed
with the results.

None the less, it will give you an insider view in to one of my shoots where I used a mixed bag of HMI
cinema lights, Tungsten and Flash as well as scrims, flags and other
stuff to achieve my goal.

Julie Potapova from Silent Models in Paris was a pleasure to work with as was Marielle Loubet the Make-Up artist and Stylist Parissima
Saleh. In fact although a very, very long
day, it was a real pleasure working with the whole team.

I was also very pleased with the clothing on offer from “Paul & Joe”
Paris. They worked perfectly for
the theme, except for one change that didn’t work out. Was not as fluid
as I would have liked and the color I chose for the capture didn’t work
with the rest, so we decided to use another clothing change that would
be more in line with the rest of the theme.

Anyways, hope you enjoy this almost as much as I did.

“In the wind” Making of Video Paul & Joe Paris

The first two dresses appear as though they were taken from this season’s designer offerings. The first could easily be Marchesa or Carolina Herrera and the second, Vionnet, Halston, or Donna Karan, just to name a few.

This is an impeccable twosome! While both are gorgeous, the first is my favorite….such delicate and painstaking details. Another which would translate well with today’s styles.

This magnificent work of art is my absolute favorite…..it screams Alexander McQueen! When I see dresses such as this, I’m reminded of why I love to watch the old black and white movies of the 20′s and 30′s.

The second dress is beautiful and also appears as one that we might see from today’s designers.

The dress on the right is another delicate and feminine lovely with a Vionnet or Halston Heritage look.

Ah……both are equally lovely. In the two of these, I see Valentino; especially the dress on the right.

The dress on the right is interesting looking, almost as though there is a story attached. In this one I see Anna Sui.

Nice and simple, yet beautiful. I would love to see the outfits without the vests.

These appear as versions of the booties that we wear today….perhaps Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu.

NEW YORK — From a visual of Washington Square Arch framing the entrance to Lenny Kravitz’s “American Song” serving as the soundtrack to the finale photo and video installation of America’s female icons then and now, the Costume Institute’s “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” exhibit feels like a journey through this country’s past through the fashion lens.

In a series of atmospheric oval and circular rooms, the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings to life the different stages of the American female identity, from “The Heiress” in a room inspired by Mrs. Astor’s Newport mansion and garments by Charles Frederick Worth, to “The Gibson Girl” exploring sports in all seasons, and “The Bohemian,” who seems right at home in environs inspired by the Tiffany Studios.

The exhibit strikes a political note in a gallery devoted to “Suffragists” and “Patriots” with actual footage of the movement marches and banners from the era, which is followed by “The Flapper,” which represents the sexual and economic emancipation of women in a skyscraper backdrop loosely inspired by Tamara de Lempicka’s Art Deco paintings, according to curator Andrew Bolton.

Perhaps the most quintessential symbol of America to the world could well be the “Screen Siren.” It features mannequins in glamorous gowns set against screens showing scenes from famous Thirties movies, and including Hollywood icons such as Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford and Rita Hayworth.

Over the decades, much has been made of what is in a fragrance bottle — hope or science? For Mary J. Blige, it’s transformation.

“I wanted my fragrance to be something special for my female fans,” said Blige of her new fragrance with Carol’s Daughter, My Life, named for her landmark 1994 recording of the same name. The album represented a major turning point in Blige’s life and by using it as a reference, she is attempting to encapsulate her decadelong transformation and triumph.

While the My Life scent may be meant to represent everyday life, Blige and Carol’s Daughter are breaking the bonds of traditional prestige fragrance retailing by choosing to launch My Life solely on HSN on July 31. Blige is an investor in Carol’s Daughter, which also is a break with industry practice.

Blige, who worked with Firmenich to create the scent, concedes fragrance development was new to her, but she did have a secret weapon: Pamela Baxter, president and chief executive officer of LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics North America. Blige’s husband and manager, Kendu Isaacs, has an uncle who is married to Baxter, who Blige affectionately calls Aunt Pam.

“We’ve been family for years,” Blige said, before adding about developing a fragrance, “I’ve never done it, but it was so much fun because I have a keen sense of smell. I knew exactly what I wanted and would ask for an incense smell, a musk smell, a wood smell. I also wanted florals, but edgy florals. Every day they would bring me blotters to test — after a while, everything started to smell the same, so I had to pull back.”

Once she got the juice to an early stage, Blige shared it with Baxter. “Aunt Pam came to our house for Christmas during that time, and I said, ‘Pam, I love it, but something’s causing me to hate it.’ What is that smell — there’s too much of it. And Pam said it was wood. I got on the phone right away and said ‘take the wood out!’” Blige said with a laugh.

Baxter noted that Blige is studious about every task she tackles. “She likes to know what she is talking about,” said Baxter. “She is not one to let anyone manage her life. She wants to learn everything from top to bottom.”

Despite the assist from Baxter, Steve Stoute, lead investor in and chairman of Carol’s Daughter, is quick to stress that Blige had free rein to create whatever she wanted to. “No one said to Mary, ‘this is what the industry likes, this is what will sell.’ It was completely Mary’s creation, and she went through six different iterations before it was perfect. And that way, it really has become her fragrance. The endorser becomes the author.”

The scent’s top notes are of gardenia petals, Bartlett pear and white freesia; the heart is of tuberose, blooming jasmine, gold lily and apricot flower, and the drydown is of cashmere woods, praline, sesame and incense. It will retail for $46 for 1.7 oz. and will be sold with a clutch purse.

While some high-profile names are fine with smelling a final scent and cashing a check, Blige isn’t one of them. “I have to be involved,” she said. “Because when your name is attached to something, and it’s not good, that’s your name. So I prefer a good name rather than vanity and riches.

“At the end of the day, it’s for me,” she continued. “So if I look ridiculous and not know what I’m talking about and not know what’s in my own fragrance, it doesn’t look good to people. When I was doing the [public service announcement for her charity, filmed earlier in the day on set] out there, I was saying education is power. That’s what I mean. It is powerful to sit here and talk to you and tell you I know what’s in my fragrance. I was there, putting it together.”

From what’s stated here, it sounds as though this is going to be one of those soft, floral fragrances. It contains two of my favorite elements, Jasmine and gardenia. I’m actually surprised that it’s has taken Mary so long to throw her hat into the ring with regard to fashion or another venture. She is well known for her chic and stylish fashion sense, and I personally thought that she would have developed a clothing line at some point.

I’m sure she didn’t want to just jump into to anything without the necessary research and processes. This very well could be the beginning of things to come, as she has cemented her place as a well loved artist, so I can imagine that the time is right for her to segue into something new. Being a lover of floral scents, I look forward to getting my hands on a bottle!

The Sylka collection fuses modern structural forms, traditional vintage styling details and innovative construction techniques to create a unique look. All pieces are specially handcrafted by herself and a small team in the UK.

The Inspiration for this debut collection comes from Japanese Origami paper folding and traditional leather styling. The Origami collection featured this season is an innovative take on the Japanese artform using specific folding techniques on a single piece of leather or fabric to construct each design. The results are highly sculptural and chic.

“I really try to challenge myself when it comes to creating new pieces. I love to experiment with new construction techniques that you don’t really see with other labels. But above all, it has to be chic and modern.”

Nerdy glasses are not quite done making their statement in the indie fashion world. The trend was apparent in the 90′s when the Fresh Prince’s, DJ Jazzy Jeff, sported them as he worked the turn tables. Head MC of Digital Underground attached a funny looking, fake, nose to his pair of nerdy glasses, but who knows? Maybe those guys really needed prescription glasses. Wether or not they really needed specs to see their hip hop hits top the charts, the look sure caught on.

Nerd frames made a come back two winter seasons ago and it seems indie trend setters are still riding those thick frames out. With chain apparel stores like Hot Topic and Urban Outfitters carrying the particular style of glasses, it looks as though we won’t be saying “dying trend” for this one just yet. The popular, young, fashion blogger from Paris, Louise Ebel, is rarely seen in a photograph without her pair of nerdy glasses; but as she models them with Miu Miu platform heels, there is no trace of the word nerd left in Louise’s attire.

Although, every now and then, a fresh face surprisingly pulls the look off, it’s best the rest of us stay clear of this trend. Justin Timberlake, Scarlett Johannson, Jay-Z and a number of other celebrities (including Madonna!) have fallen victim to the nerd glasses.

Advice: If your vision is 20/20, you are terribly lucky you don’t need glasses and you should keep it that way. If you don’t have time to pop in your contacts, wearing rectangular, thinner frames or lighter colored frames is not as harsh on the face and looks more modern, less nerdy.

Joshua Kiss and Travis Gumbs are single handedly changing the perception of male urban fashion

Meet Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs, two dapper gentlemen from Harlem who are single handedly changing the perception of male urban fashion. On their immensely popular blog, Street Etiquette, the two get dressed in anything from crisp button downs with thin striped ties and khakis to leather jackets, cuffed jeans, and sock revealing saddle shoes, clearly and vividly photographing each stylish concept for their eager readers.

Is it the music?

There are times when I feel so low, as if I want
to hide under the ground.Or build our own giant shoe box just for
myself so I can feel a little comfort in my own safety zone…
Maybe
the truth is, nothing is right…but there’s always time when I was
sitting in my car looking up to the sky, under the partly cloudy
weather…slowly…slowly driving under the constellations of
life…going into the highway, watched everything so far ahead as i saw
many lines spread from the electricity pillars that stands so
high…Then I would start to count every single details I’ve missed in
my drawings…

Or when I woke up in the morning, and drizzles of
rainy day peeking from the window pane. Playing a tune of a wonderful
melancholy sound…a reminder of November month that once feels so grand
to me…my personal treasures…

When I carefully steps
downstairs in the morning to have my breakfast and morning
coffee…Seems like I want to stop the world, right here…just let me
have this moment here a little bit longer…When the sky is clearly blue
and you know nothing is wrong…everything will be quite alright…

Slightly…slightly
you start to hope again…

The past won’t haunt you
anymore…they’re long gone…and the moment you keep…it stays in your
heart…

Jean Paul Gaultier-O.k., there are probably some UGH sounds going on. I must confess, I love, love, love, the pants and this particular style is a must have for me! Iman has always been our fashion icon, but when she receives the Fashion Icon Award at this year’s CFDA’s, it’ll finally be official. To celebrate the honor, Barneys New York creative director Simon Doonan is dedicating two of the store’s Madison Avenue window displays to the supermodel/mogul/ESSENCE.com blogger. When Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana purchase pieces from your Central Saint Martins graduation show to inspire their own collections, it’s got to be a pretty flattering compliment. For Bora Aksu, this experience was the beginning of a charmed fashion trajectory. A four-times recipient of the NEWGEN sponsorship award, he founded his own label straight out of art school and never looked back. Bora’s clothing mimics his career’s fairytale aura, cut with rock’n’roll edge and old-time royal glamour. Described by Vogue as gifted with a ‘romantic, 18th Century vision’, he has collaborated with the film, dance and music-scene elite. Bora and Dazed managed to fit all of this into our chat, plus a few words on his covetable designs for ethical label People Tree…

Dazed Digital: Who or what was the inspiration for your A/W 2010/11 collection?
Bora Aksu: Based on an imaginary relationship between Marie Antoinette and Edward Scissorhands, it’s about searching for the beauty in the unexpected. The idea was to create demi-couture dresses with a twist using different techniques. The colour palette adds dramatic noir details to a base of subtle pastels; bold coppers and blacks cut and contrast cupcake blues and pinks.

DD: How did your exclusive capsule collection for fair trade, organic label People Tree happen?
Bora Aksu: The collaboration started through a Japanese Vogue project. Three chosen designers (Richard Nicoll, Thakoon and me) designed one piece for People Tree; a limited line was produced. After its success People Tree asked me if I’d like to design a small capsule collection. As the whole purpose is something beyond fashion I didn’t think twice and we’ve been collaborating since then. I’ve learned a lot… It’s a totally different production process, compared to my own line. You need to be much more flexible as a designer. Its not so much about what I want, it’s more like what can we do together.

DD: You’ve worked with contemporary dance company, The Cathy Marston Project, and epic film prop designers Artisan Armour. How was it?
Bora Aksu: I love collaborating with creative people from different fields as it totally brings a new vision to what I do. The Cathy Marston Project was about designing costumes for their dance company. It was challenging as the costumes had to meet their needs (flexibility, strength, movement). The first trials were a total disaster – all the costumes were ripped apart in the rehearsals. And then I got it right and we were all happy.

DD: How did it feel when Tori Amos bought your whole Living Waters collection for her Bee Keeper world tour?
Bora Aksu: She is such an inspiration and I love working with her. She is so down to earth and working with her is always so much fun. At that time, I think she came to the show and decided that my whole collection fitted perfectly for Bee Keeper. Then we had meetings together: her excitement excites everyone around her. She is a very special artist.

DD: Which other fabulous women have you dressed? Who would you love to wear your garments?
Bora Aksu: Keira Knightley, Kirsten Dunst, Liz Jagger, Helena Christensen, Twiggy.

DD: Do you have more multimedia collaborations planned for the future?
Bora Aksu: I do have a film project. It’s very exciting but it’s still in discussion so lets see…

DD: Where can we buy your work?
Bora Aksu: Selfridges in London, Via Bus Stop in Japan, Zenta in Paris, Sbaiz in Milan, D-Mop in Hong Kong…

DD: What has been your best career or fashion moment so far?
Bora Aksu: I enjoy every minute of my career as I’m doing what I love… I’m still very excited about my meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in March. She is very warm and has such an aura around her.

DD: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Bora Aksu: It was from my Course Director from Central Saint Martins, Louise Wilson: ‘there is nothing impossible and if you really want it you can make it.’

I usually don’t care for those collections that take one particular silhouette and create variations, however in this case, I find them interesting. While the actual dress “structure” doesn’t change much, it’s the cotton candy colors and details that actually make them appealing. Each piece manages to hold it’s own without looking as though it’s an exact clone of the last. The Black and Metallic pieces are perfect opposites.

Halle Berry…..the woman can do no wrong when it comes to fashion; of course it doesn’t hurt that she is drop-dead-gorgeous!

Heidi Klum…….I love this dress on her, as well as her choice of Christian Louboutin shoes; the fact that they are a different color really adds an extra dose of chic.

Model Vanessa Webb’s dress is absolutely resplendent! I love the shock of red with the metallic shoes. The only thing that I would do differently, is the hair. It’s my opinion, that when wearing, a standout dress such as this, hair should be equally as beautiful.

America Ferrera……I love her in this dress, it really looks great on her. Not so sure about the earrings though.

Jay Z & Beyonce…….another of those ladies that can do no wrong when it comes to fashion, Beyonce is always on point. I love her look from head to toe.

Kate Beckinsale………yet another of my favorite people; she is a vision from head to toe. The softly curled hair, beautifully draped dress and Christian Louboutin mary janes equals perfection!

June Ambrose…….ever stylish and chic, Stylist June Ambrose is always a do.

Zoe Saldana……love the dress and the color which really “pops” against her skin. Another great look.

Zoe Kravitz……I love, love, love this look on her! This is one of THE best head to toe looks that I’ve seen her wear. She looks sweet and chic.

Taylor Swift……another of my favorites; not only is she a great singer, but she really “knows her way around” fashion. I personally haven’t seen a miss yet!

Ciara…….this dress is perfect for this gorgeous lady, as it looks perfect on her long and lean legs.

Scarlett Johansson…….she is everywhere lately and looking great! While she simply glows in this unique Armani Prive dress, her hair looks a bit “mature.” With “so much going on” with the dress, I’m sure that she wanted to keep accessories and such understated, but I think she would look great with a simply bun on top.

Mary J. Blige…….Mary J. is another fashion maven who is always a do. This is another perfect look. Again, I must speak on hair, she is a pretty lady, but this is not the most flattering hairstyle. Bear in mind, that these comments are purely my opinion and I in no way mean to demean anyone. Apparently this is what she likes, as she has been wearing it this way for quite some time; I’m just giving my two cents.

David Beckham…….ah…..handsome David! In my book, he’s another person who can do no wrong when it comes to style. He’s ALWAYS gets it right!

Jennifer Lopez……Apparently this is the bun that has been buzzed about the last couple of days. I must say that I love it; not everyone can pull off such “big hair,” but she certainly can! Jennifer knows what works for her which is evident by her stylish and chic fashion choices. she looks as though she stepped from the pages of a 60′s issue of Vogue.

Nicole Richie…….this is a good look for her; it appears that this is a harem jumpsuit and I love it.

Vanessa Williams…….she is a vision in cobalt blue!

Victoria Beckham…….I usually like pretty much anything that she wears, but I’m lukewarm on this look. I always expect that kind of “pow-pow-bang” from her.

Gabrielle Union…….I like this look, kind of understated and sweet. I really love the shoes!

Jessica Alba…….she, as always, is perfect from head to toe; the statement necklace adds just the right touch. She is another perennial who knows what works for her and turns it into her own stylish look.

Estelle……this is a nice casual look, but I would love to see the entire boot!

Rene Zelleweger……..Rene, Rene, I’ve said this before about her, while she always wears beautiful dresses and shoes, her hair usually appears a bit shaggy and unkempt. I would love to see her with a “fancy” updo and chandelier earrings. Again, this is purely my opinion.

Rashida Jones……..I love the shoes, but the way that the pieces are put together makes her appear a bit “matronly” The top and skirt with a cropped jacket would offer a younger more fresh look.

Catherine Heigl…….I love the dress. The addition of the necklace and belt make it a great look.

Idris Elba………another handsome man who falls into by David Beckham category. He looks great in anything that he wears!

Robert Downey Jr. & Gwyneth Paltrow…….both look fabulous! I love Gwyneth’s jacket and shorts; it’s a nice take on the traditional suit.

Rachel Roy……..While she is usually the epitome of chic, this look really does nothing for her. I can imagine that the event that she attended was of a conservative nature, so possibly that is the reason for her outfit choice, but it ages her.

Gwen Stefani and Kingston……….she and kingston are casually chic ! I really love her jacket.

Selita Ebanks……..While I like the overall look, the shoes kind of throw things off a bit, at least for me. A nice bootie would make the look at little more “clean.”

Kate Hudson……..I believe she is attending a premiere, but whatever the occasion, I LOVE the Louis Vuitton cape!

Dr. Courtenay Chatman and Actor Michael Jai White…..I had to include them, as she looks like a gorgeous goddess! Talk about a perfect fit, that dress appears as though it was made especially for her.

Brooke Shields…….love the dress and even more the color! It’s a good look on her.

Gayle King……..Gayle is looking really good! It looks as though she as lost some weight. she is working that dress!

Kate Hudson…….I had to add this picture as well because I love the look. Of course the first thing that caught my eye is that beautiful fringe bag and the fact that it matches her elbow patches.

Toni Braxton……..She is one of those people (like Halle Berry) who really, really looks great with short hair. Her look is simple, understated and chic.

Melissa Rycroft……this is another of my favorite casual looks; everything is in sync.

Kelly Rowland……..you really can’t tell if she wearing a mini or shorts, but I like what I can see of the look; nice bag.

Selma Blair and Kirsten Bell…….Selma’s look kind of reminds me of Victoria Beckham’s tux, just kind of blah. I do however, Like Kristen’s dress

Brandy………nice head to toe look.

Courtney Love……she looks great……This is one of the best pictures of her that I’ve seen in a long time!

Mya…….I’m liking her “rocker chick vibe.”

Aisha Tyler……I love the dress, but Ithink it’s the shoes that Kind of throw things off a bit. A strappy metallic or snakeskin would really give it a different look.

Miley Cyrus……..Doing things her way; you have to admire that.

L.L. Cool J………..Nice casual look.

Chris Pine & Zachary Pinto……..I like both looks, it appears that they actually put some thought into what they’re wearing.

Kimora Lee and Kenzo…….what a cutie Kenzo is! I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a picture of Kimora this casual. I can remember reading somewhere, years ago, that she said she always wears heels and didn’t like flats. I have seen her in more flat sandals lately, I’m sure much to do with the fact that she has a young baby, coupled with the fact that after wearing nothing but heels for years, her feet need a break!
