PHOTOGRAPHER TO KNOW: Ryan P

PHOTOGRAPHER TO KNOW: Ryan P

I’ve known Ryan Pavlovich and his work for a few years now, and all I can say is each set he puts out is better than the last.  Concentrating on fashion and music photography, Ryan adds an artistic aesthetic to his photographs that I’m sure all of you other art nerds (like myself) will appreciate.  Music is huge in Grand Rapids (MI), and Ryan knows all of the best locations and venues to shoot all of the talent Michigan (and a few other states) have to offer.  I’ve seen him in action a few times at shows and on shoots, and I’m always incredibly impressed with the results. Check it out:

Ryan says:

“I take pictures, live in Grand Rapids, and grew up on loud rock.  Like any other kid, I had magazine photos covering my walls and no idea what I wanted to do besides be cool.  I love what I do, the places I’ve gone, and the people I know more and more each day. I’m still working on the cool part.”

If you like fresh ideas, good rock music, and the carefree attitude that knows photography is an art form, not a dollar sign, check out more of Ryan P’s work on CultHe’s also got a site with tons of photos, and a blog with updates, photos, and great entries like this one:

“What ever happened to the time when rock stars where thought of as gods, actors and models where sexy and wasted most of the time, and people actually made music, movies, and images that were worth a shit? It seems to me that maybe because I’m getting a touch older I don’t view all these things the way I did when I was younger and dreaming more, but it also seems as though something has been lost.

Just a random thing I started thinking about recently. I feel that a few years ago I looked up to so many people and now I’m looking at the new batch that is supposed to be looked up to, and I’m not impressed. Call me biased, but I think we need to raise the bar with some things… Just think about it.”

WTF!?! Hilary Duff

WTF!?! Hilary Duff

I don’t even hate that dress too much…okay I hate that dress too much…but is it just me or does Hilary Duff look really weird from the waist down in this photo? Her thighs or something look really wide and her legs look really long, and really short at the same time. What is going on!

QUOTE: Grace Coddington On Overly Thin Models

Perez had a lot of typos in this entry, but we’re all guilty of that from time to time. Regardless, Grace had a lot to say on overly thin models, and the recent Ralph Lauren photoshop incident. Do you agree with her?:

“It’s a big problem. I remember when I was young [and still modeling], they told me that if I didn’t lose weight, I’d be out of the show, so I spent a week living off of coffee. But I’m a very levelheaded person. These problems nowadays are with kids much, much younger than that, and that’s most of the problem – when they’re very young and vulnerable….

But it’s a big problem in the fashion industry. And you go to meetings to discuss it, and you think it’s kind of futile, because it’s such a big thing, and in the end, people are always asking for more and they’re always asking for thinner…. [Models] have to be a little thinner than you and I because you always photograph a little fatter, but you don’t have to go to the extremes they go to. And because they’re kids, they take it too far and they can’t regulate their lives, and next thing you know, they’re anorexic, and it is tragic.

And I don’t know what the answer is, except to keep on it, which we’re all trying to do. Anna‘s trying to do it. Personally, we’re not allowed, at Vogue, to work with girls who are very thin, but you never know, because you could book them and think they’re a certain size, and they turn up on the shoot and suddenly they’ve spun into this anorexic situation. And you’re on the spot and you have to get the job done and you have one day to do it, and what do you do? But you try to be responsible, as Anna is.”

QUOTE: Robin Givhan Thinks Thin Is In

QUOTE: Robin Givhan Thinks Thin Is In

Robin Givhan, a journalist for the Courier, knows that thin is in, but she’s telling everyone else that they shouldn’t be surprised:

“The fatter the general population, the thinner the idealized woman. And for all the public posturing and blogging, the only force that stopped people from buying clothes and magazines was the souring economy, not righteous indignation over skinny models. Fashion doesn’t just reject the overweight and the obese. It also gives the average a hard time, too; it makes them worry about every cookie eaten at the end of a meal or every exercise commitment that goes unmet. Fashion is a purveyor of status. It is a badge of honor for having outrun, outfasted saddlebags — unless they are floral-printed and made by Dolce & Gabbana. Those who can indulge in fashion feel their prize is that much more valuable.”

Let the uproar begin.
