Hey indies,

I’m going to give you the scoop on what goes on at a designer trunk show at Henri Bendel so that next year when they are looking for new talent you’re ready to make it past their judges on on to their selling floor.

Twice a year designers line up around the block to show their creations to the buyers at this high-end department store. If you have something that sparks their interest they let you show in their store. If all goes well from there you can keep showing on a regular basis. Hopefully one day you can prove yourself worthy and they will just be able to buy your line.

Above is my little headband line. I would like to introduce all you Fashion Indie connoisseurs to the other talent that was sharing the spotlight with me this weekend. Should you get picked it is a very good idea to bring help along. My publicist Mylan Bui and Jowita Kurowski helped me, bringing over a good three bags full of head candy goodies!!! Bui-Lavry PR Rocks!!!

In the front of the store there is currently a designer cupcake maker/celebrity birthday cake baker showing. I promised not to tell who they are designing a birthday cake for next week. If I leaked this bit of information their Lower East Side bakery would be paparazzi mayhem!!! Let’s just say John Mayer was the last rock star they designed for. Strictly A-list.

Indie Jewelry designer Mindy Lam was in Henri’s on Sunday but has been showing near the entrance all week long. Her jewelry is nothing less than a work of genius. I say it like this because all her jewelry is couture and can only be produced by her personally, her designs are a hand-crafted skill that can not be taught. She is beyond indie, Mindy’s gems are in a whole other category of independent design.

One of my most favorite designer’s was a Chocolatier named Confuzzled , these intense chocolate toffee cookies are making an appearance on the View this Tuesday (Be sure to notice her pretty little girl who will be wearing an Angel Lust bow). Confuzzled is proof that The Daily Candy is God!!! Confuzzled started out doing monthly trunk shows at Henri Bendel, during which an article in The Daily Candy featured her. Eventually Bendel’s bought her stuff in bulk and placed it permanently in their high-end chocolate bar in the penthouse!!!

So here are three quick tips for making it on the Henri Bendel buyers short list.

1. Get to the Henri Bendel casting calls early.
2. Have professional help from a PR agency.
3. Get mentioned in Daily Candy or any other noted press and be sure that your first collection sells out, quickly. Call friends, put in favors, do whatever you have to do, just make sure that when you hit the selling floor of Bendel’s you’re selling.

Working with a publicist who really has a mission to push the challenges of designing in a more organic way is really interesting. I’m not giving myself complete credit just yet for accomplishing anything on this end of fashion. However all the ideas are stirring up inside that creative little head of mine…

Henri Bendel’s will feature Angel Lust headpieces which were designed by fellow indie, Kristen May Anastasia.  Kristen has been building a cult-like following amongst downtown and uptown girls for her hyper-styled headgear, which was recently featured on Gossip Girls (I know, we said we wouldn’t talk about them again, but come on, one of our friends got her goods on the show and it’s worth a mention).

You can pick up one of these exclusive head pieces at Henri Bendels thru Wednesday so stop by. If you really love Gossip Girls (which I’m sure you all do), then head there on Tuesday cause one of the stars of the show will be available to sign autographs with Kristen.

If you can’t stop by Bendel’s, you can pick up Angel Lust at Shop and Patricia Fields.

The Macy’s Flower Show with Phillipe David Blond has some great footage up that gathers their inspiration process and teaming up with the fabulous fashion legend Billy B!!! I love everything this team co-creates!!! The Blond’s have a truly beautiful marriage of sorts when it comest to every project they are involved in. These displays of passion are very mesmerizing….

April 22nd the state of New York is funding a charity event to promote earth friendly fashion and product design.

Beautiful work of art in human form, Chris Whelan will be gracing the runway in clothing by EDUN alongside other model humanitarian company i.e. Ralph Lauren poster boy Robyn Sinclair.

The goody bags are limited to a 100 for the VIP invites.

So twice a year NYC’s famous Henri Bendel’s holds a search for new indie designers looking for an in to the industry. Designers will start to line up outside starting at 2am in the morning. I was not going to get up that early, however I did get there at 7:30am and at that time was still 2 city blocks away from the entrance. While about a thousand people continued to add on with every hour or so.My time paid off thanks to the hands of the fashion gods and my brilliant reps at Bui-Lavry PR who helped me display and sell my treasured head pieces. Bendel’s is giving me a time slot to host my own Angel Lust trunk show near the end of April, which will coincide with the debut of my items on “Gossip Girl” !!!I’m going to write more about the event on my personal blog along with some very helpful tips for all future designers who want to stand in line. The worst day of my life was 9/11. I think most New Yorkers feel the same. These are Designer Gas Masks that where made for display only. They stand for more then fashion terrorism, they are a comment on the constant state of fear in general as stated on the company sites manifesto…

“We are in a state of perpetual war – with ourselves and with the eco-system that sustains us. Perpetual war breeds perpetual fear. In the present context, this fear stems from our extreme desire for authenticity and manifests itself in our collectively insatiable culture of consumption.

Deep down, we are afraid we may never be satisfied. An expanding archive of branded myths and icons feeds this fear. Designer Gas Masks is an attempt to visualize this state of mind. Because it is only by first acknowledging and then challenging fear that we will all be able to breathe a little easier.”

As I was web surfing all these images came to me, I wasn’t searching for them specifically. It got me thinking about how art imitates life and what kind of world we are living in. I’m not criticizing any of these pieces. I’m writing about them out of fascination. They’ve really challenged my state of mind. I’m known for designing for a rock n roll Lolita world with bows and hearts. I’ll continue to do so. Designer Jame Piatt will probably not.

Hello Indies!!!

Its been awhile since I posted but I’m back to bring you a healthy dosing of some hot French stuff (in the spirit of Dan’s trip to Paris)…

Theres a hot new fashion mag on the loose called MISSBEHAVE, and it’s completely a counter culture juvenile masterpiece. One of the major contributing photographers Beatrice Neumann is a virtual pal of mine. She is responsible for shooting this month’s sexpot starlet on the rise Amber Heard, indy cool cover girl on the rise !!! I’ve been to many shows from Paris to New York and a few parties here and there. I can honestly say I’ve never gotten my manicured fingertips into anything quite like the swag bag that Bui-Lavry PR put together for the Mandate of Heaven show. I was so impressed that I had to simply lunch with the ladies and introduce my creativity so we could work together in the future.

I felt like it was Christmas time as I plowed through the Vidal Sasoon gift bag for a huge sampling of their hair hydro mask and cream polisher. Makeup Forever supplied their luxuries of a cosmetic bag filled with liquid foundation,lip gloss and a sparkling diamond eye powder. Skinny Skinny Soaps samplings of bath salts were made available as well in more than a sampling packet. I’m happy to say that I just bathed with the revitalizing substance. Oh dear I wish I had a picture of the fabulous high heel shaped cookies that where baked and in sight everywhere, fashionably delicious, which we owe a big thank you to Sabina who runs the Corner Stone Bakery…

Best of all and completely decadent, at the very bottom of the bag was a packaged box full of jewelry hand crafted by indie designer Dana Blair!!! I was lucky enough to receive a semi precious jeweled bracelet which sells for $140.00!!! Actress Mena Suvari just bought the same one the designer herself informed me as I worked the room.

As I left I felt as if I’d seen the catwalk and won a shopping spree in downtown Soho!!! Now that’s swag!!!
