For designer Joseph Janus, it’s all about understated details. His latest collection for Bodhi handbags starts from a unique color palette and yields an intersting combination of luxury and function. Seafoam blue, salmon pink, sherbert orange and classic creme and black hues are fused with chic, compartmented details–multiple zippers, pockets, embroidered straps, signature safety pin handle–and textures. The original styles range from patent leather nighttime clutches, accordion-inspired totes, and ostrich and crocodile travel-friendly bags. For the collection’s release, NYC hotspot Tenjune hosted the event, sponsored by Fashion Week Daily, in which hundreds enjoyed and evening of fashion and cocktails.

To say I was impressed by Banana’s spring/summer collection would be an overstatement. Yet what it lacks in originality it makes up for in breezy classics that exude that effortless style. That aesthetic is best expressed in variated denim with deconstructed finishes and streamlined fits,  lightweight khaki in the form of slim cargo skirts and culottes, boyfriend blazers, and versatile  materials like japanese silk and organic cotton.

The relaxed vibe is also prevalent throughout the accessories: leather cross-body bags, heeled wooden clogs, suede desert boots and boat shoes. It’s a collection that definitely reads “refined American sportswear”, and is something I would look forward to wearing once spring comes back around. Although I would’ve like to see something more progressive, Banana does what it does best–trendy, modern classics that are easily intergratable into any wardrobe.

Blondie’s 1983 video for “Rapture”, in which Debra Harry fancies herself a rap lyricist, could be considered corny by today’s standards. Her outfit, however, would look just as good now as it did over 20 years ago. Considering fashion is now deep in an 80’s revival, the look can be easily pulled off and would make for a rather stylish ensemble. The black tube top bejeweled with chunky gems is an obvious compliment to high-waisted dark shorts. Throw in a flimsy lace shawl, stringy, layered necklaces and understated heels, you get a look that is both simple and bold.

This awesome two-day event inlcudes a dj spinning some groove-worthy throwbacks, tons of beauty vendors, and the attendance of over 500 women (and maybe a couple of men–I see you Daniel) that just might be worth the $40.00 dollar price tag of admission. Representatives of skincare, makeup, clothes, shoes, jewelry, accessories and even cosmotology companies, with even more free goodies in tow, were there to help us all look and feel just a little bit prettier. And who doesn’t want that?

Rucci killed it this season, delivering nothing less than stellar for his upcoming spring collection. Besides this being my first fashion show at the tents, I was beyond impressed by Rucci’s Japanese-inspired interpretation of elegant eveningwear. Every piece that floated down the runway was infused with a delicate balance of femeninity and architecture. His was a mixture of semi-structured sillouhettes, bold details, and fabrics that somehow give off the illusion of depth.

Layers of chiffon, silk and tulle were an omnipresent feature throughout the collection, showing up in dresses, skirts, gowns and daycoats. Eye-catching accessories such as obi shawls, and beaded tulle neckpieces were the proverbial icing on the cake. Not bad for a first show…

What initially caught my attention about this dress is how simply sexy it is–it’s skimpy without being desperately slutty. And even though it has that early 90’s, Contempo Casuals vibe, one can easily bring it up to date lest you wind up looking painfully literal. My suggestion? Make it high fashion with a pair of high-heeled gladiators and some bold, chunky jewelry. Or for a more urban feel, go with some booties, an obi belt, giant around-the-way girl hoop earrings and a glowing décolletage.

My ambivalence toward Amber Rose, whose overnight celebrity is as capricious as her taste in clothing, was beginning to wane until I came across this recent pic of her leaving Villa Lounge in West Hollywood last weekend. I say, “do you”, but I can’t help but wonder why anyone would purposely be out and about looking like an Oompa Loompa with titties. Aside from abusing a bottle self-tanner, the girl goes out of her way to match her unoriginal hair with those omnipresent leggings, played-out watch, pack of Newports AND sunglasses that, for some reason, she decides to wear at night (I still don’t get it). You can take the girl out of Philly but you can’t take tacky out of the girl. Ford Models would not approve.

Though an archaic pastime, the Polaroid picture has become as ubiquitously cool as Ray-Bans, as I’m sure every hipster is keenly aware of. So I don’t know if Colin O’Dowd’s vinyl-framed, true-to-size design capitalizes on, or pays homage to America’s favorite instant photo. Nonetheless, this 107x8mm mirror is clever and stylishly minimalist, if not practical.

I love, love, love this dress…besides the fact that it’s grey, the unstructured and simplistic design is to die for. I also love how its complimented by bold accessories: smoky eyes, chunky bracelets, daring open-toe lace up booties, and a simple black clutch. I could definetely see myself wearing this to fashion week. Front row, bitch.

No matter how hard you try, functional compartmentalization will never be fashionable. Furthermore, is it really too much to go out of your way and use pockets? A small purse, perhaps? The Cap-Sac was created to alleviate such inconveniences and is basically an even lamer reincarnate of that horrifying phenomenon, the fanny pack. I don’t care how many pockets it has or how many blinding colors it comes in, it does not conceal the fact that its just plain offensive. People who would find this cool:

As of late I’ve become a gray junkie. My affinity for this humble neutral has resulted in an excess of gray pieces in the form of t-shirts, tanks, blouses, hoodies, jeans, shoes and so on. So imagine my elation after discovering Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Concrete Jungle—a matte, heather gray lacquer that is as edgy as it is versatile, and would go great with my slate, scoop-neck tunic. Although it’s a basic hue, it is nonetheless unconventional and has that eclectic appeal that more adventurous ones would flock to. Another reason to give done-to-death black a rest.

The last time I saw a ring/watch combo was probably around the 6th grade when they were considered a cheap novelty, were most likely to be found in one of those grocery store bubble gum machines and, 9 times outta 10, didn’t actually tell time. But after coming across these lovely little baubles from urban jewelry designer Melody Ehsani, I cannot wait to get my hands on one. With an emphasis on creativity, Ehsani’s finger pieces are flashy without being tacky and come in an assortment of styles: The Rolee, The White Diamond, The Cartee in silver and The Cartee in gold. Any one would make for a fun, hip, not to mention practical, accessory.

Little Hermoine goes from Hogwarts to haute couture as the face of Burberry’s fall 2009 campaign. This is a first for 19-year old Emma, as this is her first major modeling gig, and I must say she does well for a novice. Shot by Mario Testino in central London, Emma looks every bit the grown-up with her sultry makeup, nonchalant pout and wisp of a hairstyle. This represents a shift for Burberry since the brand is known for casting actual models throughout previous campaigns–Lily Donaldson, Rosie-Huntigton Whitley, Agyness Deyn—and it seems as if they’re conceding to the celebrity-as-spokesperson angle. I say let actors be actors and vice versa, but when it works…

Katy Perry makes for a poor man’s Lady Gaga in this loathsome sushi spread at the MTV Video Music Awards in Japan on Saturday. I guess it’s easier to turn yourself into a spectacle instead of making good music, or doing anything relevant for that matter.

We all know the frustration of applying five coats of nailpolish WITH a topcoat only to have it peel away three days later, and paying upwards of $20 bucks for a salon job just to be met with the same deterioation. If you’re like me and you love to decorate your fingers with a fresh pop of color and not fret over the inevitable chipping, O.P.I has come up with Axxium Soak-Off Gels, permanent laquers that, really, last as long as you want them to. It’s basically a thinner version of the acrylic paste used for traditional artificial nails that, when set to ultraviolet light, forms a lasting bond with the nail that won’t chip. As your nails grow, you get “color fills” to shade in the new growth, and when your finish loses luster or you just get bored, a regular polish can be applied on top of the gel. A 15-20 minute soak in an acetone solution with dissolve the gels completely should you want a brand new set. For $40 I’m definetely down.

Influenced by minimalist architecture and west coast nonchalance, designer James Perse continues to expand his line of subtle, casual basics, most notably, sumptuous t-shirts and tanks. In his most recent collection, Perse sticks to a high fashion, low-maintenance philosophy, creating luxe, high-quality thin-cotton v-necks, scoop necks, fitted tank tops, tunics and more that offer a relaxed, yet stylish aesthetic. Think of it as the bottom the fashion pyramid—simplistic staples with which you can either build your wardrobe upon or just as easily wear alone. So, apparently if you’re a model that does coke she’ll let you slide. But naked photos floating around the internet? You can kiss your spread goodbye. According to reports, Rihanna, who was lined up to do a covershoot for Vogue magazine, was snubbed by Anna Wintour thanks to some salacious, recently leaked pics of the star `a la Vanessa Hudgens. A source tells Star magazine:

Rihanna and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour had been talking for weeks about doing the cover and an inside spread. Anna told her Vogue absolutely loves her and really wanted to work with her. Rihanna was ecstatic. But since the photos came out, Anna hasn’t returned any of her calls. Rihanna’s so upset… She hopes the people at Vogue change their minds.”

Not that nude pictures of Rihanna isn’t news to me, but I’m more surprised that Miss Stonyface has the nerve to be pious when Vogue has commited more moral atrocities than Caligula–on a bad day. The hypocrisy is palpable.

Now that watching Sex and the City reruns on TBS has become a regular habit of mine, I’ve come to notice something that somehow escaped me the first time around. Maybe it was the glamour and allure of the New York City backdrop, but, besides the fact that Carrie is a complete idiot, I’ve realized just how truly ugly her outfits were. And yet, it has made a celebrity out stylist Patricia “feeling-herself-too-much” Field who quite frankly, at her age needs a little Stacy and Clinton in her life. Having been responsible for Carrie’s signature haphazard style has for whatever reason has spurred Patricia-mania, and I have yet to buy the hype. But I digress.

Some may say Carrie’s wardrobe was eclectic, unique, even groundbreaking. And yes, there were moments when I literally salivated over a well put together, chic ensemble. But nine times out of ten, the clothes were nonsensical and excessive, if not schizophrenic. I’ll admit it’s gotten better over the years, and with movie number two on the way I can only hope Carrie’s outfits aren’t as skittish as her relationship with Big.

She would probably look like this, minus the bizarre hairdo. An Anna Wintour bob perhaps? No…Barbie would scoff at such drabness. Elle magazine’s creative director Joe Zee give her the devil wears prada makeover, trading tacky Toys “R” Us collections for something more au courant–Balenciaga peacoat, Chanel bag, Hermes scarf, slim, dark denim jeans and oversized shades (worn indoors, of course). The only thing she’s missing is a pretentious scowl.

I’m still not understanding why high-end fashion houses find it necessary to lend their names to various modes of transportation and other outdoor apparati. I mean, is there a market for this kind of absurdity? First Chanel comes out with a segway and now Fendi has produced this $9,500 fur-accented deluxe bicycle that defies both logic and good taste. Granted, it’s not as obnoxious the segway, and with it’s detachable Fendi case, leather accessories, and vintage, almost rustic design, some might even call it charming. However, this is just another example of conspicuous consumption—and what person who could actually afford such frivolity would have the compulsion to ride one? Isn’t that what chauffeurs are for?

It’s been reported that the reclusive one has decided to quit acting for good to pursue a full-time career in the fashion industry. This comes as no surprise and I would think that most people would have already come to that conclusion since she hasn’t really acted since “New York Minute”. Anyway, Ashley tells V Man Magazine:

“I’ve been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I’m choosing for myself – to be part of the fashion industry. That’s what I want for my future. It has nothing to do with my past, nothing to do with anyone else’s agenda. And I followed my heart the whole way.”

While she and Mary-Kate will continue to collaborate on their line, The Row, she’ll be much more involved in the creative process as well as expanding the line into menswear later this year. I suspect that with her current fashion icon status and keen sense of style that she can definitely be a success and squelch any belief that their collection is just another celebrity line.

Another case of beautiful girl, ugly outfit. During the 2009 Cannes Film Festival this past week, Zoe decided to show up to the amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS benefit in a posh burlap sack. Was this shapeless, flesh-colored abhorration her idea? Or was she just the unwitting victim of an underqualified, scatterbrained stylist? And that hair…seems to me as if she’s still in Star Trek mode because it’s looking very extraterrestrial, not to mention unflattering. Her forehead looks twice as big in that high, bumped-in-the-front ponytail that is doing her no favors whatsoever. The only thing that stands out in this outfit is the shoes and clutch, which are totally fierce. Had the dress been a more saturated color, and we took away the nonsensical hairdo, this might have worked. Otherwise all you have is a weak ensemble.

When the universe sends me a man, I want him to look exactly like this. Being the Taurus that I am, I can’t help but be drawn to richness and minimalism, which is exactly what this look emanates. It’s unassuming and low-key, yet it stands out tremendously. I absolutely love the rolled-up sleeves and trousers, the traditional boat shoes, the oversized man-bag, and the unisex accessories all amidst a neutral color palette. It’s classic without being dated, simple without being boring, and bold without being excessive.

I can’t get enough of organic and sustainable clothing, especially when they look as luxe and hip as designers Debra Kellner and Marie-Helene Gautier’s new line, Leaf. Based in Montreuil, France, the duo sources materials from small cotton fields in India, proving again that you can produce aesthetically pleasing garments while sticking to ecologically sound practices. The collection consists of urban basics such as jersey harem pants, menswear-inspired vests, wide-leg trousers, and swathy, oversized button-downs that are earthy, yet très à la mode. Parisian hipsters and fashionistas alike are taking notice, with the collection being carried at fashion enclaves such as Le Bon Marche in Paris, Liberty in London, and Flying A in NYC.

Nonetheless, prolific photographer Mark Borthwick’s new book, Not In Fashion is an artful, sensory stimulating collection of unconventional photos which, incidentally, features a then 21-year old version of the indie ingénue, amongst other quirky and well-known celebs. It was during the ‘90’s, while helping then-fledgling magazines like Purple, Self Service and AnOther, that Bothwick first began integrating elements of architecture and design, developing a very personal and intuitive style that can still be seen today. This book showcases over 200 images from his best fashion editorials, celebrity portraits, and advertising work, displaying his ability to turn a stationary photo into a fluid performance. Borthwick’s work is not only about the movement of the model, but the beauty of accidental clutter, which is as important to his images as the garments. Not In Fashion also features excerpts from his personal journals, which mainly consist of Polaroid’s, sketches and notes on shoots, revealing the inner workings of a photographer’s mind.

My only question would be, can you actually swim in it? Apparently so, but this might be one of those “I’m just going to sit by the water and look cute” situations, unless you don’t mind waiting an hour for your swimsuit to dry—talk about old school. This 75% cotton, 25% linen vintage-inspired one-piece comes in a light blue, worn-in wash and bears a playful, tiered ruffle detail with midline ruching and halter tie design. It’s not absurdly expensive and it’s a fashion forward option aside from your basic bikini.

Times are tough, and when it’s time to trim the fat its only fair that the once-famous supermodel, whose only real purpose is to make it look like it’s not really all about Tyra and provide shallow, empty commentary, should pack her bags and leave the house.

“The current state of the economy has forced shows to make major budget cuts industry wide,” says America’s Top Model executive producer Ken Mok, in a joint statement with Tyra Banks released Monday. “America’s Next Top Model is not immune to these financially challenging times. We’ve had to make significant cuts in every area of the production and, unfortunately, Paulina was a casualty of these cuts.”

Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to make a difference since the show is a joke anyway. They should’ve stuck with Janice even if she did talk out of her ass half the time, at least she was entertaining. So who’s up next…Frederique Van der Wall?

Or to put it more eloquently, wardrobe. Game. Proper. Yes, a lot of fuss is constantly being made over Michelle’s taste in clothing, but for good reason. Unlike her predecessors, nary a boxy, double-breasted suit or dated color scheme has come her way. And after seeing her in this outfit for the White House Evening of Poetry and Music event this past weekend, I feel compelled to bestow some praise. Wearing a breezy, altered mutli-patterned piece from British design duo Basso & Brooke’s spring/summer ‘09 collection teamed with a pair of white Maison Martin Margiela cropped trousers, the First Lady looked polished, comfortable, and effortlessly chic. Not to mention the drop disc earrings and alluring makeup, which really brings out the composition of this top. Which leads me to thinking…all of the former first ladies just dressed bad on purpose?

It may be a perennial shade, but now—spring–is the optimal time to lacquer your fingers and toes with a soft, opaque infantile pink. At first I was unconvinced, but after having recently tried the color out for myself, I became fascinated with how beautifully subtle and universally flattering the hue can be. It looks stunning on just about every skin tone and registers a clean, sophisticated look. Take a much-needed break from in-your-face neons and heavy darks, and give this delicate, creamy tint a try. Best bets:

As cliched as the whole “ants at a picnic” scence can be, there’s nothing trite about this season’s affinity for insects. As part of her men’s spring/summer 09 collection, Ann Demeulemeester turns beetles into less threateneing sequin and stone encrusted broaches; innovative, albeit a tad creepy. Netherlands jewelry designer Ineke Otte’s ant necklace and Frances Wadsworth-Jones’s 18-karat gold and oxidized silver ring is an ode to the most annoyning of bugs, while

gingham wedge sandal is playful, fun and least likely to make you itch.

The relatively new designer’s Autumn/Winter 09 collection is a contemporary ode to the eponymous sophisticate, Holly Golightly to which its name is owed. Consisting entirely of uniquely constructed dresses, the Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Chloe alumni’s pieces are inherently classic and feminine, and carries an uptown palette. However, Karem’s penchant for offbeat details such as an oversized ruffle hem or a racerback bodice, and creative use of delicate fabrics add a sense of adventure and daring, and a downtown vibe that begs to be noticed. The meek need not apply.

Rihanna bears a frighteningly striking resemblance to the King of Pop, circa 1989 while out shopping in L.A. recently. I’m pretty much on the fence when it comes to Rhi’s fashion choices, but jumping on the Balmain jacket bandwagon may not have been a wise decision. Not only is the drum major look a bit severe for daytime (not to mention those hideous shoulder pads), but with the hair and the shades, all she’s missing is a glittery glove and a monkey named Bubbles.

Overdramatic sentiments become appropriate, necessary even, when confronted with such dopeness. This would be the case for this sick bootie/wedge combo by We Who See that I would gladly drop $130 for. The bunched canvas platform features leather strap detailing and peeptoe and heel cutout. Oh, the possibilities…slightly tucked in skinny jeans, a lightweight mini, or some tattered cutoffs would be the perfect sidedish to this delightful main course.

It’s already practically summertime here in Cali, a sign that bikini shopping season has descended upon us. But even if you live in more frigid climates where spring showers are the norm right now, it’s still not too early to get ready for beach cruising, late-night pool parties and any other reason to preen around half-naked. LA designers Scarlett Chorvat and Alison Renner have created a covetable collection of fresh, edgy bikinis that utilize inventive, lightweight fabrics, playful prints and vivid colors. The Shimmi Collection pieces evoke a sexy, cutting-edge spirit in that effortless unassuming sort of way, but is nonetheless crazy stylish. Just another reason to stop dawdling and shed that winter flab ‘cause we all know that backfat ain’t cute, girl.

Walking down the street one morning, I see a young woman dressed somewhat professionally, as if she’s on her way to work—smart, black trousers, fitted white button up and unassuming black heels, typical of the “business casual” dress code. But what caused this mundane occurrence stand out in my mind, and what would be the catalyst for the following rant is that over what would have been a sensibly attractive ensemble hangs a dingy, grossly oversized men’s zip-up hoodie splattered with a gauche, nondescript print. Why?!? I thought to myself, and suddenly realized that such crimes against fashion seem to forever permeate the greater population and assault our senses on a regular basis. I just can’t seem to wrap my mind around why some people choose to look like shit, given the plethora of resources and pillars of fashion how-to at their disposal. There. Is. Just. No. Excuse.

These are some of the worst offenses, old and new that I think if eradicated, would make the world a much better place:

1. “No clothes” clothes. Let the world know how insecure you are.
2. Skinny jeans on fat people. Hence the word “skinny”.
3. Overzealous anything. It’s cliché, but damn true: less is really more.
4. Ugg boots. Why do people still wear these??
5. Ill fit. End the delusion. Dress your size.
6. Mariah Carey.
7. Missing the mark. You tried but it’s not neither here nor there. Go with what you know.
8. Head-to-toe matching. It’s old-fashioned, tacky, and hurts my eyes.
9. Intentional, unnatural whiskering/fading on denim. Still??
10. An ostentatious outfit and a meek disposition. Like the aspiring emo kid in skintight jeans who looks as if he’s been called fag all day. Own it.

This is probably the one and only time I can honestly say that Ciara looks like someone who knows fashion. Looking to be having a lapse in Solange-itits, Ciara got in touch with her inner fashionista (and maybe a credible stylist) and stepped out in this crazy fierce ensemble for Nylon Magazine’s 10th Anniversary party in New York the other night. I absolutely love everything about this look; the asymmetrically tiered pencil skirt and shrunken leather jacket pulled together with a simple white blouse, wide black belt, and simple jewelry is incredibly stylish. I absolutely love this moderately styled online shop which is a innovative display of some of the most ubiquitous and sought after underground labels and indie designers, made even more accessible just in case you don’t happen to live in L.A. It’s also an extension of the 300 square-foot Chinatown boutique that shares an equally eccentric and understated aesthetic, kinda like American Apparel but less crass. The company’s roster of eclectic clothiers include Costume Dept., Miss Mars, Rojas and Grey Ant making it a haven for hipsters and artists alike. New High (M)art attempts to blur the lines between fashion, art and commerce staging gallery-like 6 to 9 week shopping “installments” in store, with an “emphasis on bringing attention to the risk-takers and more forward-leaning examples of design”. They also have some random cool shit like deliciously vulgar greeting cards and vintage hip-hop records.

L.A. based designer John Ward has revived the idea of luxe sportswear with his new line, Maggie Ward. Taking a fresh, updated approach to modern basics, his Fall 2009 collection features elegant body-hugging leggings, tanks, thin knit sweaters and bodysuits that you probably wouldn’t want to actually do any real physical activity in. Using non-traditional materials such as artesian Japanese fabrics and washable stretch leather and velvet, these pieces only look casual yet are nonetheless comfortable. In addition to opulent details, Ward’s penchant for architecture is evident throughout the collection with the use of geometric patterns and semi-structural designs. From partying to shopping to just plain chillin’, Ward’s blend of simplicity and luxury makes this label a truly transitional staple.

I would have to say that as far as accessories go, anything that can be worn on your arms add the most eye-catching detail and can make the most of any look. Despite being afflicted with abnormally small wrists (I’ve lost many a bangle due to my petite limbs), I have always been keen on bracelets, bangles, cuffs and the like. Jewelry designer Nicholas King has captured my heart with his collection of daring and beautifully executed wristwear that makes use of simple, yet dramatic materials. Made in jolly ol’ England, pieces consist of big, chunky gunmetal and clear resin cuffs inlayed with silver and gold studs, golden rope and wicker, with accents such as velvet ribbon and crystal bows. If you think that’s dope, check out his equally impressive necklaces and earrings that bear a similar aesthetic.

Although the only time I’ve ever looked at an issue of Marie Claire was offhandedly in the doctor’s waiting area, I am totally enthralled by this fashion-soaked reality show. It’s an entertaining, if not accurate depiction of what it’s like to work as an intern at a mainstream glossy. This show has done for me what Stylista didn’t—instead of nonsensical challenges and novelty, weekly eliminations (that by the way took place on a made for TV set) we see three, couldn’t-be-more-different fashion industry hopefuls tackle real (?) assignments and frenetically run around NYC in their respective heels all in an effort to please the dry, yet endearing editor-in-chief Joanna Coles.

With four episodes down, the characters are well in place. Samantha, who is by far my favorite, is the small-town, doe-eyed optimist whose positive attitude more than makes up for her naiveté. Despite some seeming body image issues—an ill-fitting sample size garment results in a teary breakdown—her sweet and carefree nature makes her stand out amidst the I-take-myself-way-too-seriously ilk. Talita is the opportunistic diva who definitely rocks the best outfits, and speaks with a deep, self-assured cadence. With a degree from the eponymous FIDM, she’s a little tense, but driven. Then there’s the deplorable wretch that is Ashley, who’s “bring the other girls down to make myself look good” approach will really get her far in this industry (insert sarcastic tone here). Instead of letting her experience speak for itself, which she’s failed to do thus far, she flagrantly whines and complains about the other girls getting more glamorous assignments while she gets stuck running mundane errands. Um, hello…that’s what interns do. Secondly, a negative disposition will only perpetuate a less than desirable situation; you get what you put out and being a hater gets you nowhere.

If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend checking it out. It’s as mind-numbingly addictive as Top Model reruns on Oxygen, but better.

I somehow, inadvertently was able to catch the encore presentation of this annual “fashion show”, and not surprisingly, was pretty much disappointed. Maybe it’s the fact that what I had hoped to be a fashion-forward platform for innovative, up-and coming black designers actually turns out to be a quasi-concert where video vixens replace actual models that results in my inevitable indifference, if not despondency. I mean, I get it—it’s the fusion of hip hop and fashion, a cultural melange of creative expression. However (and this is where they get it wrong), the predictable drone that is mainstream rap completely overshadows and, at times, dictates some of the fashions that stanky-legged down the runway Sunday night. Not to say that there weren’t some designers that managed to stand out: Korto Momolu’s breezy, ethnic-inspired dresses and jumpsuits, and Byron Lars’ sophistocated twist on timeless, classic pieces were dreamy and well executed. Even the fact that Joy Bryant was actually wearing makeup and not looking dowdy for a change was enough to keep me watching till the very end. But then there was the tacky, repetitive, done-to-death streetwear, rapper-sponsored labels and Baby Phat copycats that turned promise into mediocrity. This probably wouldn’t have happened had they let Kanye West get involved, as much as I hate to say it, since he seems to be such the fashion savant nowadays. There’s always next year…

Beatrice Boyle’s undeniable talent for graphic illustration has resulted in a capsule collection of tees, tanks and dresses for the British fashion boutique, Browns Focus. The 23-yr. old Fine Arts graduate of St. Martins in London, uses glossy imagery injected with gloomy distortion, creating pieces that are representative of fashion at its edgiest. Boyle’s artistic coalescence of the “glamorous and the sordid” is fun, unique and makes runny mascara look both scary and beautiful.

I am almost certain that the editors of Details magazine thought they could shave a couple inches off of Kanye West’s otherwise puffy jaw and think no one would notice. A less subtle lightening of the eyes is also an egregious, if not incidental act. Taking into consideration that this is a men’s fashion magazine, I am highly doubtful of the latter. Giving that same deadened, blank head-on gaze he’s done way too many times before, a thinned out version of Kanye’s face, and a chest that’s seen too much daylight, comprise the March cover. At least they left the frown lines intact.

An aesthetically pleasing medley of rich brights, bold details, and ethnic inspiration best describe the debut label, Suno, the clothing brainchild of textile entrepreneur Max Osterweis. The Spring/Summer 09 collection is a playful ode to the women of East Africa and downtown New York as, incidentally, production takes place on both coasts. With the help of highly skilled sample and patternmakers in New York City’s garment district and talented artisans in small Kenyan workshops, you get one-of-a-kind, authentic pieces that incorporate vintage Kenyan kengas with contemporary silhouettes. The outcome being barely-there minis, leg-baring jumpers, sleeveless dresses, off-the-shoulder blouses, and lightweight, fitted blazers, plentiful in color and print, akin to wearable art.
