© 2009 isamaisa
1 + 1 = 3*

*A theory from Bernard Werber exposed in “The Encyclopedia of Absolute and Relative Knowledge“ in 1993.
By Isa Maïsa

I have repeatedly seen how opposites seem to attract. A form of osmosis perhaps? You have what i don’t? Never a dull day? Whatever the reasons, I always find the results create an interesting “new” melange. Let’s take old examples of what was: converse tennis shoes worn with a party dress, a tall, blond blue-eyed man with a short olive skinned woman, a conservative with a liberal or sweet and sour cuisine. At one time, these mixes were “new”, fresh, different and out of the ordinary which then led to even more “new” and innovative ideas. I believe that the sum of the talents of two people is greater than their simple sum of their addition. A wonderful domino effect of sorts.

In a society where everyone looks the same, does pretty much the same thing and originality lacks in everyday life, I find it exciting to see diversity, variance and the “new”. I believe as a designer/creative person, I am here to stimulate and to be stimulated towards variety and diversity. I am naturally attracted to opposites: wood with metal, dark with light, soft with rigid, shiny with matte and what fascinates me are the ”new” creations that happen on a regular basis with common everyday pedestrian items. For example, clothing made out of recycled plastic, water used as fuel, hot chili peppers as the main ingredient for a sumptuous dessert. Doesn’t this sound interesting to you? It does to me. In my mind, it takes some off the wall and wacky thinking to place two opposites together to make 1 “new” unique thing.

Life should be creative. Are you creative? Do you try to mix different things together to come up with something “new”? I am and i am always looking for an unconventional wacky way of thinking when it comes to my designs. I find that necessity always pushes me to create some “new” form of thought and therefore, a “new” idea and ultimately the product. Since we cannot stop evolving and we are surrounded with so many opportunities to think outside of the box, it would be benefitial to look at the infinite melange of two opposite things that make something original. How can you take an image from a different perspective? How can you mix the music using totally opposite polarities to come up with a new genre of music? How as a designer, can two opposite materials create a new style and product? Why not use ordinary corduroy fabric to make an elegant little black dress? I have seen makeup artists use feathers as false eyelashes. Orange peels for eyebrows. pushing our creative imagination ripples into our common everyday life and will have an effect on the society as a whole. This is what I believes drives mankind forward. That desire to break down the walls of convention and break the mold.

I see it this way; ”new” ideas keep us flexible and open to the possibilities, while stagnation dwarfs our growth allowing the status quo to remain intact and unchecked. By allowing diversity, variance and difference in our everyday life, we become more tolerant to “new” beliefs, ideas and cultures. in today’s fast changing world, this is a very powerful thing.

“This is the main focus of my life,” explains Green, “so how could I not make a new record every year? That would just be lazy.”

4. Mika
Singer-songwriter Mika, with Pivovarova in Céline tan bodysuit dress, belt, box bag, and wedges.

“I made a conscious decision to keep taking risks,” says Mika. “I’ve listened to so many second albums, and so often you feel like people are taking a couple of steps back away from the microphone, but I decided to be un-complexed and unapologetic, and that kind of helped me.”

5. The Horrors
From left, The Horrors’ Tom Cowan, Joshua Hayward, Joseph Spurgeon, Rhys Webb, and Faris Badwan, with Pivovarova in Balenciaga zippered stripe dress, ring, and boots.

“We want to make music that makes people feel something,” Badwan proclaims, “that provokes a reaction.”

6. The Horrors
Left: The Horrors’ front man, Badwan, with Pivovarova in Givenchy striped jacket, blouse, and georgette trousers.

Right: The Horrors’ lead guitarist, Hayward, with Pivovarova in Lanvin one-shouldered dress, belt, and clutch.

7. MGMT
Left: MGMT’s Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, with Pivovarova in Yves Saint Laurent blouse, briefs, collar, belt, and clutch.

Right: MGMT’s VanWyngarden and Goldwasser, with Pivovarova in Rochas floral silk blouse, skirt, and straw bag.

“People assume that we used to be really weird and that we toned it down and started writing pop songs in order to sell out,” says Goldwasser. “When really, the songs that got so big were some of the first songs that we wrote. There wasn’t anything contrived about it.”

8. Chester French
Left: Chester French’s D.A. Wallach and Maxwell Drummey, with Pivovarova in Balmain fatigue-green military coat, distressed tee, leather trousers, belt, and boots.

Right: Chester French’s Wallach and Drummey, with Pivovarova in Louis Vuitton lace pullover, embroidered blouse, lamé skirt, ombré bag, fur tail, and boots.

“We’d made the music without a real regard for building an audience,” Wallach explains.

9. Golden Silvers
Left: Golden Silvers’ keyboardist, Gwylim Gold, with Pivovarova in Burberry Prorsum petal-pink duchesse-satin trench, belt, socks, and platform boots.

Right: Golden Silvers’ Alexis Nunez, Gold, and Ben Moorhouse, with Pivovarova in Nina Ricci lace jacket, floral camisole, rose ruched skirt, ribbed leggings, scarf, flower brooch, clutch, and booties.

“There wasn’t any big concept,” Gold explains. “It was more like, I’ve written some songs, and I want to play them.”

Corridor40—Lately, it seems like I’ve been going a little boy crazy–at least with my clothes. Switching my ruffled blouses for blazers and my sequin skirts for satin trousers, it’s only natural that I would eventually stumble across Singapore label AL & ALICIA. Designer Alicia Ong has created the perfect hybrid of feminine and androgynous-chic clothing that I can really see myself living in.

With AL & ALICIA, Ong breathes new life into our classic closet staples. For instance, she took a simple V-neck, doubled it up, unevened the hemlines and added a cool “Fembot Army” graphic to it. Of course, my favorite is the tuxedo-inspired romper with inverted pleats on the bottom; anyone who can turn pleated pants and shorts into a haute look is alright in my book. Anyone who can make me want to wear Chuck Taylors–or any sneaker with laces in them, for that matter–is okay with me, too (that’s an even bigger challenge than creating cool, pleated pants!). The entire collection is filled with an “I’m too cool to give a damn” attitude, which I really dig.

These threads haven’t found their way onto the mainland yet, but Ong has launched an online store to hold us over until AL & ALICIA hits stores in the U.S. I know what boys like, and I know what I like and–thanks to AL & ALICIA–I now know it’s okay to wear pants.

The fashion designer Donna Karan is producing a short film, titled Four Play, about new Karan’s Eldridge bag, which is worn in four different ways.

Christina Ricci is the protagonist of the movie, which were directed by Sting’s son, Jake Sumner

She plays four different personalities dancing and spying at the Soho Grand Hote: The Paramour, The Expressionist, The Dreamer and The Voyeur.

“I didn’t want it to feel like advertising. I wanted it to feel like something that could be viewed in itself, but using the aesthetic of Donna Karan.

There’s a thin line between very unsubtle advertising and doing something that stands alone and has its integrity,” Jake Sumner said. (Luxuo)

As we head inexorably into winter here on the East Coast, it’s time for The Classicist to take a look back, raise a glass and celebrate the best of the season. Perhaps you’re looking for a last-minute gift for the holidays or just want to treat yourself once the dust settles. Here’s our rundown of seasonal favorites, some we’ve mentioned before and others appearing for the first time. See the gallery for full pix:

1. Barbour Dunelm jacket: A slimmed down version of the classic foul weather parka style jacket in signature waxed cotton with an attached hood, utility pockets and a two way zip under a studded-front storm flap, from the classic British outerwear company. Founded in 1894 and holders of the Royal Warrant, they’ve opened a new chapter in classic sporting style with updated designs.

2. LINCS by David Chu cardigan: From Chu’s new collection of clothing for the “gentleman adventurer”, a weighty cashmere cardigan in a heathery loden weave with a leather buckle at the collar and suede trim under the placket. The epitome of Chu’s classic and rugged yet elegant ethos.

3. Ralph Lauren tartan duffel: Part of Lauren’s luxe new Holiday Collection, rooted in the spirit of 1930′s Sun Valley, the famous Idaho ski resort frequented by socialites and celebrities. Tartan plaid wool with saddle leather trim embodies wintry sophistication.

4. Wolverine Gentry Upland boots: From the 125-year-old company’s new vintage-inspired 1000 Mile Collection, finished in rough full-grain leather with loden Pendleton wool inserts and lug soles. Equally at home in the field or on the town.

5. Caesar Guerini Apex shotgun: The rich heritage of fine Italian shotgun makers meets British lines and classic style in the Apex field and sporting models, blending beauty – Oiled Turkish Circassian walnut stock and intricate engraving – with performance and lasting value.

Renowned photographer Roxanne Lowit has been chronicling the fashion scene for the past 30 years; early on she staked out the backstage areas at fashion shows, where the really interesting action takes place, as her prime hunting ground for capturing the most beautiful people in their natural habitat. Now Lowit, whose work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum and others, has an incredible new book just published by teNeues, focusing on brilliant, flamboyant Dior deigner John Galliano’s couture concoctions which she chronicled for over a decade. Backstage Dior, with a foreword by Galliano, mixes black-and-white and color images, candids and close-ups, delving into the fascinating details behind the scenes. The book is a must for any devotée of fashion, spectacle, photography, or all three. (Luxist)

It was only a month ago that Thakoon Panichgul was announced as the new creative director of the Japanese fine jeweler Tasaki, but his first designs for the pearl-favoring brand have already hit the Web. Thakoon’s signature humor and verve bring a little levity to the collection: He arrays pearls on finger-spanning rings and pendants, even—with a few safety-pin-accessorized necklaces—making the prim staple look positively punky. “I wanted to put some youthful spirit into pearls,” he told WWD. The pieces, however, will be at grown-up price points, ranging from about $5,500 to nearly $40,000 when they debut at Tasaki’s Ginza, Tokyo store in April (not February as previously reported). New York girls, there’s reason to hope: The brand is mulling an NYC shop, but no plans are confirmed yet. (style.com)

The bigger — and odder — the better. That’s clearly the motto du jour among a certain set when it comes to accessorizing their necklines.
Not content to merely decorate their décolletage with a simple sprinkling of diamonds, these celebs and socials have been breaking out all manner of necklaces from torso-length feathery confections to barbed wire-inspired statement makers.

Never one to shy away from a bijou or two, Daphne Guinness went tribal at the NARS 15×15 launch fete in New York, while Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kelly Wearstler opted for less glitzy, but no less subtle, takes on the look with fringed fabric bibs. Lake Bell gave her LBT a punk flare with a silver spiked piece at a New York screening of her latest flick, “It’s Complicated.” Incessantly papped songstress Rihanna gave photographers plenty to shoot when she donned a chunky version of Chanel’s iconic logo-laden strands to the fashion house’s spring presentation. And couture darling Lady Gaga had a veritable chandelier hanging from her throat in the form of a weighty, diamond-encrusted bauble. Such high-impact and burdensome statements are likely not pain-free — these girls might want to add chiropractors to their holiday wish lists. (WWD)

Extreme? I think not…..I love each and every one. I appreciate the fact that some women take it beyond the norm.

Eva Longoria Parker, the actress and L’OrEal Paris front woman, has delved deeper into beauty with a signature women’s scent, called Eva by Eva Longoria.

The eau de parfum, which was developed by Falic Fashion Group, is due to launch in the U.S. in spring.

“I have always been somewhat allergic to all perfumes and really wanted to create something that every woman could wear,” said Longoria Parker. “So I decided to create my own fragrance that is light, fresh and unique. I think the scent of a woman is extremely sexy and this scent will prove that.”

Longoria Parker, who stars in the ABC TV show “Desperate Housewives,” was closely involved with the scent’s creation, according to Jerome Falic, chief executive officer of Duty Free Americas, parent company of Hollywood, Fla.-based Falic Fashion Group.

“Eva was involved from Day One with all aspects of the project,” said Falic. “At the end of the day, it’s about Eva. She wanted something different, so we designed quite a few different [versions].”

“I never knew how complicated it was to create a unique scent that hasn’t already been done,” said Longoria Parker. “But I enjoyed the process.”

The scent was composed by Takasago and features top notes of citrus, neroli, bergamot tea and aldehydes. The heart of the fragrance includes sheer jasmine, muguet, violet and freesia, and the scent dries down into notes of skin musk, amber and sandalwood. The bottle, intended to resemble a feminine silhouette, was designed by Wilhelm Liden at Paul Meyers & Friends and manufactured by Bormioli Luigi.

Eva by Eva Longoria is not directly associated with “Desperate Housewives,” Falic noted. “It’s just Eva Longoria’s brand,” he said. However, existing fragrances tied into the hit show have been developed. For instance, in 2006, Coty Inc. launched a “Desperate Housewives” scent called Forbidden Fruit. Also, German direct sales company LR Health & Beauty Systems introduced during the summer a line of four scents named for the characters in the show — Bree, Susan, Lynette and Gabrielle (the last of whom is played by Longoria Parker).

Eva by Eva Longoria is Falic Fashion Group’s first celebrity fragrance, and Falic explained the firm had been on the hunt for a celebrity deal when it approached Longoria Parker about a year ago. “She’s got worldwide presence,” said Falic, “so we feel we have a worldwide brand.”

Eva by Eva Longoria is to make its debut in April in more than 1,000 doors in the U.S., including Macy’s, Dillard’s and Bon-Ton. Throughout the rest of the year, the scent will be rolled out to Mexico, South and Central America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The fragrance will come in a 1.7-oz. version for $45 and a 3.4-oz. version for $58. Industry sources estimate the scent could generate upward of $15 million in first-year retail sales volume.

Longoria Parker is slated to make personal appearances in the U.S. and abroad to promote the scent, Falic noted, and a print ad campaign featuring a visual of Longoria Parker — lensed by Randall Slavin — is to break in April issues of fashion and lifestyle magazines. Industry sources estimate as much as $6 million might be spent to advertise and promote the fragrance.

“The plan is to, in the future, bring [out] more fragrances with her name,” said Falic. (WWD)

As my friend facebook’s me regarding her bidding woes over oroton handbags, I started to realise that I hate bidding on ebay. I don’t get the gamblers thrill – I need a xanax. I don’t like the heart break of losing out to some anonymous wench who will soon have her dirty hands on my Lip Service top. DNW. Bidding on Ebay is like a relationship doomed from the start. I hate the chase. I should be chased – My TUK heels are not made for running after someone, nor for proverbially on the internet. I hate even being near the casino. Why would I want to combine something I hate with something I love? Betting and shopping in my mind is like an abusive relationship. There is no thrill in the chase. Heartbreak and loss is a relationship lesson I have already learnt from boys and I am not willing to get a backhand from what lets me escape romance bullshit. Or maybe I’m being too sensitive over the whole internet bidding thing. Now that I think about it, I never was good at forums. No one does, or ever will, know who I am in reality and yet I’m still too shy to type…For now however, I’m sticking with “Buy it Now!”

My Weeks:

The Shits…

- Christmas shopping is over!
- The Fame: Monster
- Two sleeps and my love is with me once more for Christmas <3

The Pits…

- Alice Dellal claiming in the latest British Vogue that she’s a punk. I love her, but shaving ones head does not a punk make. Many of my punk friends would be very offended by a high fashion model claiming that. *shake of head*
- RIP Brittany Murphy. Amazing in Girl, Interrupted.
With a whopping 44 percent of survey votes, H&M and Jimmy Choo had the most inspired collaboration of 2009. From the moment the companies announced they would work together, anticipation began building. Finally, it reached its culmination on Nov. 14, when Choo fans bought out the stores’ offerings of shoes, accessories and apparel. But they weren’t the only companies to team up. Target and Anna Sui (with 24 percent of votes) debuted a fall collection inspired by “Gossip Girl,” and Payless ShoeSource (nabbing 10 percent of votes) recognized the power of “Project Runway” by signing season four winner Christian Siriano as its newest guest designer. For the second year in a row, Christian Louboutin was chosen as the most influential designer label, with 21 percent of votes. He beat out runner-up Marc Jacobs (with 19 percent) and third-place winner Jimmy Choo (with 13 percent). Working in Louboutin’s favor this year were some big buzz builders, including a glittering new store on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, where he shot part of a short film inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” And if that’s not enough, Louboutin also created a special collection of shoes for Mattel’s Barbie doll and unveiled it — in all its bubblegum-pink glory — during New York Fashion Week in February. It looks like Roland Mouret might just love Beyonce as much as we do… The French designer has revealed that Bey was behind his decision to start raising the hemline on his covetable form-fitting frocks.

The French designer recently began to stray from his tried-and-tested style of signature calf-skimming dresses – releasing a series of frocks for net-a-porter.com with a decidedly higher hem.

‘In a funny way, the first one that did that for me was Beyonce,’ he told FabSugar.com. ‘This season, where my length was mid-calf, she asked to raise the hem.’

‘I said, ‘You really inspire me, because it’s nice to see that kind of attitude,” he continued.

The designer du jour – who counts Victoria Beckham, Cameron Diaz and Heidi Klum among his famous fans – admits that his original longer-length designs were created for women who ‘don’t want to show the legs, because they don’t like the leg’ – but that the new style gives women the option to flash their pins if they want to.
Making the rumors official, Louis Vuitton launch a special mini site dedicated to its latest collaboration, this time creating alongside Parisian street artist André.

Creating a portrait gallery of Parisian and New-York trendsetters, André and a cast of friends are seen in the Marc Jacobs designed frames which take cues from the house codes.

Toms Shoes has teamed up with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on a limited-edition shoe, available on the shoe brand’s Website starting yesterday.

Co-designed by actress Charlize Theron, the unisex shoe is made from vegan materials and was inspired by the baobab tree, whose silhouette is embroidered on blue and orange canvas. A portion of the proceeds from each pair will go directly to the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, which provides education about the need to provide sustainable health, education and recreational resources to remote areas with high rates of HIV/AIDS.

“I’m thrilled to have Toms Shoes as a partner,” said Theron in a statement. “We are so grateful for their generous donation of shoes to the students that we work with. They are passionate about the kids and have been incredibly supportive of the work of the Africa Outreach Project. It’s exciting that we’re able to come together in such a cool and creative way to bring attention to the needs of many South African youth.”

The limited-edition shoes are available for $54 and are sold exclusively on Tomsshoes.com. (WWD)

Beyoncé Knowles is aiming to light a much-needed fire under the beleaguered fragrance business this February with her first scent, Beyoncé Heat. Industry sources estimate it could do $100 million at retail globally in its first year on counter. At least half of that figure is expected to come from U.S. sales.

And the entertainer — who is up for 10 Grammys on Jan. 31 — is more than up for the challenge. She can’t wait to get her scent into the hands of her fans.

“I’m so happy with it,” she said during an exclusive interview with WWD. “I’ve been working on it for a while now. I was on tour for a year, and I have meet-and-greets with fans. I’ve never in my life gotten so many compliments. Coty has their own testing, but that was my testing! The fans loved it. They were like, ‘I love that, I’m getting that, why isn’t it out right now? I need it!” said Knowles with a laugh.

Her fans’ passion helped spark the development process. “What inspires me [both in music and product creation] is love, passion — something that makes me want to be better, to do more,” she said. “Knowing that I have people who look to me — because thank God I’ve had so many great opportunities — I don’t take it for granted. Young girls can see me, and think, ‘Wow. Maybe if I work hard and I’m focused, I can do the same thing.’ And they absolutely can. It’s not just about me being a singer. It’s about knowing that I have people who look at my life, and to know I can inspire them inspires me.”

For the fragrance’s name, Knowles drew from her past tours. “A lot of my performances have had fire involved, so we thought ‘Heat.’ Also, red is one of my favorite colors, as is gold,” she noted; both colors frame the bottle. “So then we thought of making the bottle look like it’s on fire. I love antique bottles — my mother had a collection of them when I was growing up. I wanted something with an antique yet modern feeling. Even with my wardrobe, I always try to find things that have a little bit of something vintage, yet still timeless and classic. The bottle, I felt, was a great mixture of the two.”

The juice, which Knowles concocted with Givaudan’s Claude Dir and Olivier Gillotin, has top notes of red vanilla orchid, magnolia, neroli and blush peach; a heart of honeysuckle nectar, almond macaroon and crème de musk, and a drydown of giant sequoia milkwood, tonka bean and amber.

“This was my first time starting from scratch, although I’ve worked with a few other fragrance projects,” said Knowles, who has also been the face of Tommy Hilfiger’s True Star and Giorgio Armani’s Diamonds. “Everything, from the bottle design to the name and the ideas for the commercials — that’s me. When I commit to something, I do it 100 percent, and I’ve never had [creative control over a fragrance] until this project. I learned a lot of great things from the past — but I always asked myself, ‘If I could have my own scent, what would it be?’ I wasn’t worried about deadlines. It could have taken me three, four, however many years — this was my first fragrance, and I wanted to make sure that it was something I would love forever.”

And there will definitely be more fragrances, said Stephen Mormoris, senior vice president, global marketing, at Coty Beauty, a division of Coty Inc., which holds Knowles’ scent license.

“We will explore all of the different sides of Beyoncé with future fragrances, but Beyoncé Heat is meant to be the enduring classic,” said Mormoris. “We think this scent will re-energize the celebrity category.” Mormoris declined to discuss how large a house of Beyoncé fragrances could be, although industry sources estimated a Knowles-branded fragrance collection could represent a $300 million market opportunity within a few years.

The Beyoncé Heat lineup includes eaux de parfum in three sizes — 1 oz. for $39; 1.7 oz. for $49, and 3.4 oz. for $59 — as well as a 6.8-oz. Gold Sparkling Body Lotion for $24. (WWD)

Good for her……and I must say, she definitely chose the right dress for the ad!

Nine isn’t the first film inspired by 8½: Woody Allen got there first, with Stardust Memories. Charlotte Rampling was the legendary beauty in that movie. Nine, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), recruits a whole team. Kate Hudson! Nicole Kidman! Marion Cotillard! Sophia Loren! And Penélope Cruz, left, an actress whom Fellini, were he alive, would no doubt have loved, just as Pedro Almodóvar does.

8½ is a study of, among other things, the power of a muse. In this film, the muse is Claudia Cardinale—kittenish, concupiscent, and, in the film’s own words, “child, yet already a woman, authentic and radiant.”

A candid Cardinale, circa 1960.

An altogether different kind of beauty shows up in 8½ when Anouk Aimée appears onscreen. Aimée—who also starred in La Dolce Vita—brings her aristocratic cheekbones and astringent intelligence to the part of the director’s semi-estranged wife. (Marion Cotillard steps into the part in Nine.)

Aimée, ready for her close-up, 1969.

Blond, buxom, Swedish: Anita Ekberg was the ultimate fantasy sexpot. The image of her romping in Rome’s Trevi fountain in La Dolce Vita is one of cinema’s most indelible. (That film also bequeathed the word paparazzi to the culture: The wild-child movie star played by Ekberg is hounded by a tabloid photographer named Paparazzo.)

Ekberg, off duty, in 1951.

Giulietta Masina’s performance as a guileless circus performer in La Strada earned her the nickname “the female Chaplin.” La Strada won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, as did Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria, where Masina played against her waifishness as a spunky, streetwise prostitute. They married in 1943. The director dedicated his last Academy Award, for Lifetime Achievement, to her, and died the day after their 50th anniversary. Masina passed away a mere five months later.

Masina in Paris, 1956.

Tamara Mellon, designer

I will be spending Christmas in St Barths with my daughter, Minty, and some close friends.

My wow-factor frock is any dress by Alexander Wang (£855, Harvey Nichols, 020 7235 5000) will be perfect for holiday parties.

My dancing shoes are Jimmy Choo’s glamorous glitter Private shoes (£550, Jimmy Choo, 020 7823 1051).

My party accessory is the animal-print Conti bag (£995, 020 7823 1051) from my new collection.

My luxe lounging essentials are cashmere tracksuit bottoms by Juicy Couture (£92, net-a-porter.com).

My foolproof Christmas shopping destinations are gift-library.com always stocks great things – I’ve bought personalised bathrobes and towels as gifts; Hamleys is a one-stop shop for children – I’ll be buying from the Hannah Montana range for my daughter this Christmas; and Alfies Antiques Market for one-off items (Fifties Beswick cup and tray, £38, from Beth at Alfies Antiques Market, 020 7723 6066).

We know how hard it is to break into the fashion industry. Funding, mass manufacturing, press and stockists are often impossible to find. This is why Launch Initiative offers a variety of opportunities for designers at different stages in their career.

Whether you are just starting out and looking for a way into the fashion industry, or you have an established label, looking for an outlet or agent to get your stuff in the stores, Launch Initiative has a way to help.

Launch Initiative aims to nurture and assist Fashion Designers in any way they can. Through our Designer Membership we are not only opening up, but we are breaking down the door for you to achieve in the illustrious world of fashion.

Designer Membership

A Designer Membership allows new or established designers, to enter our bi-monthly design briefs. This allows them to submit their designs, to be critiqued by a changing panel of judges. These judges are growing to include potential stockists and expert designers. The winning designs are then manufactured and distributed for sale to top retail outlets, complete with the designers name on the label and a swing tag all about your label. Not only does this give the designers maximum exposure, and gets their name out in the industry, it also gives designers who are struggling with funding a head start in the industry.

?The designer remains in complete control of their design and receives a 10% royalty from the sale of their product – just like a professional. Designer Members can submit as many designs and can seek expert advice from the Launch Initiative design team before and after submitting their designs, giving maximum feedback to each designer to increase their chances of winning. ??

As well as this Launch Initiative also provides our Designer Members will access to our Webinar Series, Designers Boutique, our Mass Manufacturing facilities, and the Platinum Program.

Webinar Series

Run by two business coaches from Quantum Compass, this series guides fledging designers through the business process of starting a label and making the most of their fashion career. The business coach’s will conduct a once-a-month interactive Webinar, where members can ask questions and get immediate feedback. The series is also designed to help designers create a network for themselves and meet others in the industry.

?

Designers Boutique

The Designers Boutique is an ‘Online Store’ for Designers and established labels. Launch Initiative is opening it up to any designer members who want an outlet to sell their label.

Launch Initiative has anticipated that the Designer Boutique will help to cut out the fees that are often associated with starting an online presence, and to assist Designers in gauging maximum exposure for their label.

As well as gaining an online presence, our fashion agents regularly search the boutique for new designers to represent throughout the world. Our agents are always glad to receive look books from our designer members, and offer feed back, if not representation.

This is an exclusive offer to Designer Members ONLY. Unfortunately, we cannot view collections from any other members as we get overloaded with responses. Our Designer Members are priority at Launch and our agents are always happy to check out what you have on offer.

Mass Manufacturing

Launch Initiative has now opened an outlet to assist mass- manufacturing for new and established fashion labels.

Even the team at Launch initially struggled to find outlets in the industry to have clothing mass produced at reasonable rates when they started. But have since built strong relationships with manufacturers both in Australia and overseas.

Knowing how hard it is for a designer to find the right fabrics, pattern makers, samplist, and manufactures for their designs was the leading factor to opening this new area.

When you are ready to venture into larger orders simply bring or end your designs/samples to us, and we will handle the rest, from giving you fabric options, and custom printing fabrics, to final production, the Launch Initiative production team will ensure that you achieve the best possible quality for the best possible price.

Platinum Program

The Launch Initiative Platinum Program is an incredible opportunity for a very select few designers. The platinum program gives the top aspiring designers the opportunity to work within the Launch Initiative office, being given their own office space and all our resources to produce their own label. This program is aimed at nurturing aspiring designers, through the highs and lows of starting a label.

The Platinum Program is an invitation only program, which is based on;

- Designer Member activity

- Quality and response from submitted designs

- and Your Boutique Garments for sale

There are no catches and no deep, dark holes to fall in to. Launch Initiative is simply here to collaborate with aspiring designers, and to bridge the gap between what the consumers what, and what the designers design.

For the past few seasons, hardware embellishments have clearly been huge trends; we’ve seen studs, chains, grommets and rhinestones. But, lately, a different type of hardware trend has surfaced and has upped the ante; I’m talking about needles and spikes. As I’m all about anything black, tight, leather, shiny and daring, this trend has me intrigued.

More dangerous than pyramid studs, that’s part of the appeal. Rock and Republic featured a spiked dress, which Kristen Stewart wore to the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, in its recent campaign, and Ioannis Dimitrousis played with the hybrid of hard and soft via the knitted, body-con dress-dripping-with-needles he sent down the runway at London Fashion Week. In addition, Cheryl Cole stirred up a fashion frenzy when she wore a studded and spiked Agent Provocateur corset in a music video; the corset comes from their new couture “Soiree” collection and retails for $4,900. Feel a little adventurous? Feast your eyes on this killer clutch by Corto Moltedo and Tom Binns. Obviously, dangerous beauty is the name of the game.

Aside from spikes and needles, the hardware trends of safety pins and staples have surfaced. For the DIY-inclined, try combining these 14k gold staples from Studio OOOMS with influence from Viktor & Rolf ‘s FW08 collection.

Not convinced office supplies belong in your closet? Then consider Tom Binns’ safety pin and pearl necklace, or Moschino’s of-the-moment safety pin dress.

Jimmy Choo, a nominee for a Readers’ Choice Award for Best Leathergoods, was launched in 1995 when Tamara Mellon, Accessories Editor at British Vogue, realized the potential demand for stylish but wearable shoes. The pair formed a partnership to start a ready-to-wear shoe company and opened the first stand alone boutique on Montcomb Street.
Cold winter weather and dry home heating can take its toll on skin and nails, but there a few simple tips that can keep you hands and nails looking and feeling healthy and hydrated! Check out the insider secrets to keep your hands and nails looking and feeling healthy and hydrated!

Gatsby Salon Expert Nail Technician Krista Battipaglia says “I love to suggest to my clients to invest in a great Shea Butter to rub into their hands before they go to bed- this will allow the product to stay on your hands for about 5-8 hours without being washed off and allowing the product to really work to its fullest. Keep this product on your nightstand and you’ll always remember to moisturize before bed!”

A drugstore favorite, like Palmers Shea Butter Formula is a cost effective choice to keep hands silky smooth.

“Another tip I tell my customers is to apply petroleum jelly on your cuticles at night and massage it in, working down to your knuckles,” says Krista. “This will allow the product to get stuck under the cuticle and work it’s hydrating magic overnight.”

Vaseline works as a great moisturizer- just make sure you sleep with gloves on as it can get a little messy!

Gatsby Salon is located in Green Brook, NJ. For additional information or expert tips please contact Lori Chiazzo at The Hip Event Lori@thehipevent.com or 973-707-7125
