Whether floppy like at Rachel Zoe, cowboy like at Nicholas K, or golden like at Samantha Pleet, the brims are thick set to go all the way around.

The skinny stiletto has gone on a long walk for the fall 2012 season, replaced by chunky heels with a more masculine edge. Boots fall in two lengths — ankle length or thigh-high, leaving the mid-calf field all but bare. And black, unsurprisingly is big, but burgundy is a strong color for the season as seen on the runways for Tommy Hilfiger, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and Diane von Furstenberg, among others.

Frida Giannini turned out 20s in Milan, and she was not the only designer to do so this fashion week – think Marchesa, Temperley London, Carolina Herrera and others. However, in a remarkable coincidence (?) in which Giannini insists she was merely musing over NY skyscrapers of that time period, it also happens to be Gucci’s 90th birthday (bust out those calculators, ladies). Created by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966, Le Smoking forever changed the women dressed by simply giving them a tux all their own. A deep inside source has divulged to FashionIndie: Chanel is feeling blue. Launching in September is the new collection of Le Vernis Nail Colour, and the three new colors are shades of steely blues. The first of which is called “Blue Boy“, and it’s going to look something like this:

This über insider pointed to a nearby painting of the night sky, and explained that the three colors resemble that of moonlit wisps of cloud – that edge where the clouds fade into space. This is a rendering of the color I’m expecting upon description.

The pocketed empty bottle of tequila inhibited said insider from spilling all of Chanel’s secrets, but we will find out the three true hues on Fashion’s Night Out!

You know, it seems that Chanel is over the moon, too.

Walter Steiger Throws Barneys a Curved Heel

You know I’ve been obsessing over Walter Steiger for many moons. Well, Barneys has finally caught on. The curved architectural heel that has dominated runways has been modified by the man that created it, and Barneys just picked up a dozen.
The French brand that was thriving in the 70s has arrived once again on our shores after solely selling exclusively in Walter Steiger stores for the past seven years. Walter is now working with his sons Paul and Guilio, and that, I believe, has made all the difference. There is a resurgence in the vitality of the brand brought about by their fresh excitement with it. Such as with the inverted platform that boggled minds and graced countless editorials this Spring. Now fall has focused on the curved heel that the Italian manufacturing district refers to as the “Steiger heel”, which fits the moment so precisely.

Thus, Barneys struck a one-year exclusive with Walter Steiger, and hope to watch it grow.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her influence on fashion have been well-documented. Never making a wedged misstep, the Duchess is effectively holding fashionable court. Hence, the “Catherine factor.” The “CF,” according to The New York Times‘ Suzy Menkes ”gave basic summer dresses, always focused on that narrow waist, a fresh feeling.” Meanwhile, I came up with the “Catherine factor” ages ago, but that was just the nickname I gave for my manorexia cum brolemia.

“What might once have been dismissed as a take on mom’s household apron was literally elevated with a pair of wedges to achieve new fashion status,” writes Menkes of the royal formerly known as Kate Middleton‘s contribution to the world of style.

Menkes goes on to explore the “explosion of surface decoration” and how the Duchess, in her infinite wisdom/fierceness managed to “politely” and “familiarly” embrace prints on her “run-up to the royal wedding.” Then again on “her ‘howdy’ North American tour” when, “she wore a frill-collared shirt with graphic motifs under her cowboy hat” to the rodeo.

Bold prints are definitely in season, and have been for a while — Menkes cites the now infamous Prada Baroque print as well as historic scarf prints by Hermès and Versace — but does Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge in all her bone-thin perfection inspire your choice in “surface decoration”? [NYT]

4 Fab Beatle Boots

Do you want to know a secret? Beatle boots are actually called winklepickers. And this oddly named ankle-high pointy-toed boot of the early 60′s Liverpool is seeing a resurgence from designers like Alexander Wang, Guiseppe Zanotti and more of our favorites. Their mod minimal quality reached rocker status when The Beatles adopted them as their official shoe of choice. I’ve got a feeling we’ll be seeing these on our fab feet.

The Beatles started wearing them in their Cavern Club nights, aka that hole in the wall in Liverpool, where John, Paul, George and (eventually) Ringo would literally drive the kids into a frenzy. The Fab Four meticulously honed their look. When they hired Ringo in ’62, it was under the condition that he too brush his hair forward into a mop top. Soon, that hairdo, the Nehru jacket and the winklepicker, renamed the Beatle Boot, became just about as internationally crazed as the boys themselves. Stores across the world went wild making and stocking the Beatle Boot, and Andy Warhol even immortalized the advertisements in a work of art.

Resort 2012 Trend Report

One look at this season’s resort collections will make it immediately clear that the recession depression of last year is definitely out, and bold, rich colors and graphics are in. Naeem Kahn, YSL, Zac Posen and many others incorporated bold, bright floral palettes into their collections.

Despite a solid showing from the monochrome palette, orange stole the spotlight this year. Bottega Veneta, Phillip Lim and Dianne von Furstenberg were just a few who made a statement with solid, orange pieces in their collections. And orange you glad they did? I, for one, can’t wait to add this pop of color to my wardrobe!

With a new color palette came a more “sporty,” laid-back group of collections. Many collections featured swimwear for the first time this year, and Michael Kors, Herve Ledger, Donna Karan, and McQ took the swimwear analogy one step further. That’s right, dear readers, we’re talking about “scuba-influenced silhouettes” (Style.com). Take a look at these neon delights and tell us what you think.

Notable themes on the runway were represented by Max Azria (“a city-inspired undercurrent with a feminine ease”) and Dianne von Furstenberg (a collection of “matchy/clashy prints”). This year there was a general trend towards more urban, jet-setter style in the collections.

Marc by Marc Jacobs and Missoni both included the “emerging must-have” that is the pajama suit in their collections. This colorful, loose pant was represented in more subdued tones in numerous other collections, and retained its characteristic exaggerated length in all. Petite girls everywhere, ready your platforms!

On the other side of the pant spectrum, above-the-ankle, straight-leg cigarette pants were also popular with the likes of Helmut Lang, Monique Lhuillier and Elie Tahari featuring them in their collections. I’d like one in every color, please.

Of course, to my delight, leather separates were also popular with quite a few designers this year, including Derek Lam, Thakoon and Jason Wu, who featured leather skirts, shorts, and pants. Calvin Klein and others were also fans of thin leather belts, sending a clear message: when in doubt – belt it!

Perhaps to balance this blast of color and print (and leather, oh my!), the resort collections were significantly more buttoned up this year – and I mean that literally. The runway was up to its proverbial neck in collared shirts and high necklines this season.

In particular, the boat neck was an popular look for both separates and dresses, with Jason Wu, Louis Vuitton, Max Azria and a plethora of other designers featuring the look.

Outerwear took on a boxy silhouette, and squared-off coats were popular with Louis Vuitton, Rachel Roy and others. Oscar de la Renta fittingly featured the silhouette in his Cubism-inspired collection.

Honorable mentions go out to A-line skirts (Jason Wu, Louis Vuitton) and lace (Monique Lhuillier), both trends popping up here and there on the runway this year – always good staples to have in your closet.

Do it Yourself Runway Hair: Fishtail Braid

Judging by my stifling morning subway ride, summer is definitely here. For us long-haired goddesses, with hot temperatures and humid heat comes frizz, frizz, frizz. Beat the heat and your hair into submission by putting a twist into your daily routine with one of summer’s hottest trends for hair – the fishtail braid.

Making appearances in Missoni, Roberto Cavalli and Prada shows, the fishtail is a fresh, fashionable take on summer plaits. It’ll push your hair out of your face and into the spotlight!

Here’s how to do it yourself, demonstrated by yours truly and my handy MacBook Photobooth app:

Step 1: Separate your hair into two parts. You can do this as a side-braid (as I am doing), or a braid down your back, but you might want to try it on the side first so you get the hang of it and know how it should look.

Step 2: Separate about a half inch of hair (the smaller the piece, the more the braid will look like a fish tail) out of one of the sections, and pull it over to the other section. Pull the hair from underneath the section when you cross over to get that scaly look.

Step 3: Combine the piece with the new section, then separate about the same amount from this new section and pull it over to the old section.

Step 4: Repeat. It may take a few repetitions for the pattern to appear, so don’t get discouraged if at first you can’t see it!

Voilà ! A perfect summer style in under five minutes!

Uma Thurman: Cannes Best Dressed List

Uma Thurman has always been an A-List actress, but at Cannes last month, Uma took her fashion choices to the next level and blew the competition out of the water. Thurman sat alongside Jude Law, Robert De Niro and six others on the 64^th Annual Cannes Film Festival jury, requiring that she not only watch all 20 films in the competition, but also attend red carpet premiers, photo calls and after-parties in her Cannes best.

Uma’s white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress demonstrates just why white is a go-to look for this summer – it’s fun, refreshing and easy to dress down or class-up with a good pair of shoes. White was a trend in Thurman’s picks for the red carpet throughout Cannes, and included this white Chanel she wore to the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere.

For the opening ceremony and the screening of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Uma wore a knockout white, feathered Versace gown that had jaws dropping left and right. She knew it too, because she offered up some absolutely charming quotables to the The Daily Mail UK , saying, “I feel so good wearing the dress, I hope I get a chance to dance… It’s a dress that moves well when you dance. I was doing a quiet little dance all by myself on the carpet just now.” We are right there with you!

We love how Uma works with her height to pair adorable flats with long dresses, which is a more comfortable alternative to tall heels and is very on-trend for summer. Uma commented on her height and dressing for Cannes, mentioning, “I had to have it made because you know how it is for us tall girls. It’s impossible to find anything in a store.”

Another notable fashionista that left us dancing for joy was Kirsten Dunst, who emerged from recent acting (and everything else of note) obscurity to not only take home the award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Melancholia, but also secure herself a spot on more than a few Cannes best dressed lists.

Rocking Out in Style: LA Times Magazine’s Rock/Style Event

June is our music month, and Los Angeles Times Magazine must have gotten the memo. They held their second-annual Rock/Style event on Wednesday nigh, celebrating the collaboration of L.A.’s fashion and music scenes with live music and fashion shows, hosted by Jay Sean and featuring the DJ talents of the EC Twins.

The event was held at the legendary Roosevelt Hotel’s Tropicana Bar and Pool – with the sweltering heat in the city, the FashionIndie team can’t help but be envious!

Guests, including Kendra Wilkinson and other Hollywood personalities, were treated to a Macy’s swimwear and lingerie show and complementary Alizé cocktails and Peroni Beer at the poolside bar. Sounds like paradise to us!

The L.A. Times claimed the event would “feature special guests, DJ sets and a few surprises.” A few surprised, indeed! Cee Lo Green, half of the funk duo Gnarls Barkley and host on NBC’s new singing competition The Voice, was set to host the event but was unable to at the last minute. Luckily, the L.A. Times was able to bring in Jay Sean to fill in, and the event went on without a hitch (Forget You, Cee Lo!).

Recessionista Princess: Kate Middleton

Love shopping for less? You have an unlikely partner in Kate Middleton, who is quickly establishing herself as a recessionista princess. There’s no reason not to look good at a reduced price now that Kate’s setting such a great example.

Kate greeted a slightly dowdy looking Michelle Obama (relax Mobama lovers, the dress is dowdy, but she’ll never be!) in this $340 Shola dress from Reiss, and she is pulls it off flawlessly. Senior fashion editor at Marie Claire, Zanna Robers Rassi, refers to Kate as, “a princess of our times,” and Kate’s fashion sense more than reflects her modern sensibilities.

Kate is notorious for her thrifty yet trendy fashion choices, and has been a customer of Reiss for much of the time she has been in the spotlight. She even wore another Reiss dress, the Nanette (retail $484), for her official engagement photos.

Admittedly, some would rather see her drop a few more fifties (bullseyes if you’re in the UK) after how successfully her McQueen wedding dress was recieved. The Sarah Burton for McQueen dress was rumored to cost between $66,500 and $200,000, and hit a home run with both the public and the fashion world.

Fashion commentator Liz Jones even went as far as to subtly suggest Kate hire a stylist (my self-promotion senses are tingling), writing in the UK Daily Mail, “Kate’s role is a sartorial minefield that needs an expert eye to steer her through safely.” So far Kate seems to have tactfully avoided any fashion hit and runs, we think. Here at FashionIndie, we can’t complain about keeping our wallets a little fatter and hitting a bullseye of our own in an outfit fit for a practical princess.

Backpack Pack It Up

We’ve been easing into the concept of backpacks once again. It’s a slow moving train, but we really did them some harm in the 90′s with over saturation and awkward adolescent memories. Then we did even more bodily harm with scoliosis inducing one shouldered bags. Now, we’re not saying that a backpack is fully acceptable in an office environment, or on a daily basis, but a good rucksack like one of these will be ready for your summer adventures.

TOP ROW: These three are holding in the uptown. They’re probably uncomfortable identifying themselves as rucksacks, but given the drawstring and flapped nature of the closing, they do fit the qualifications.

God Save the Queen (of Fashion)

Right on the tail of news that the Alexander McQueen exhibit “Savage Beauty” at the Met will be extended due to popular demand, images of Sarah Burton’s newest venture – “God Save McQueen” – have been released, and they do not disappoint. The collection of silk scarves incorporates McQueen’s skull motif and maintains a sense of delicate ephemerality that epitomizes McQueen designs. Just in time for turban season!

The fashion house has gone from haute couture to household name in a mere year, with help from a diverse range of celebrity faces including Naomi Campbell, Lady Gaga, and most recently, Kate Middleton.

The new head of the fashion house, Sarah Burton, has done an unabashedly good job of pairing McQueen’s unique whimsy with a shrewd business sense, and this new venture is sure to be a successful one. Plus, FashionIndie would never pass up a possibility for turbans!

Willow Smith Is To Die For

Will Smith fell to his death off of a cliff in New Zealand?!? Not the Fresh Prince! What would Willow do? Well, PHEW! It was just a rumor. Not since Orlando Bloom spent the better part of a decade there filming Lord of the Rings has New Zealand seen such excitement. While Big Willy is still alive, we’re dying over little Willow’s style.

Girl is taking advantage of her parent’s deep pockets to explore her inner fashionista, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Embracing the wild side of fashion, Willow’s outfits this year have been fueled by nothing less than an animalistic fervor.

Exhibit A (above): Willow in all her ten-year old glory, rocking ripped lime-green leggings and wild stripes in her hair as if she was born right into a punk, techno-color Lion King dream.

Leopard print is on the menu this summer, and we’re eating this next look up.

From her adorable round-lens sunglasses, cheetah print harem pants, right down to her dark brown riding boots, Willow looks about ready to go on a fashion safari.

Willow welcomed in the spring with something a little more polished than her wild former looks, but we love it just as much.

At the White House Easter Egg Roll, the Smith family has a little something for everyone. We’re particularly loving Willow’s matching plaid blazer and shorts with those lime green sneakers, plus Jada’s light pink top with high-waisted paper bag shorts is definitively casual chic.

Granny Chic: Simply a Product of Abject Laziness

Feeling lazy? Don’t get yourself down. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen may have created a multi-billion dollar empire out of laziness.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are living the high life as of late, with a CFDA Award nomination and a successful brood of fashion lines under their boho belts. The sisters, notorious for their grungy, “hobo chic” style, recently dished to Style.com about their inspiration:

Ashley: That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection.
Mary Kate: For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?
A: Yeah, we were California girls.
MK: I think it was probably that. And laziness.

And there you have it; the purveyors of granny chic themselves have chalked it up to a combination of being cold and lazy.

Yet the Olsens are anything but lazy, competing with the likes of Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the CFDA Awards, and micromanaging ever aspect of their fashion line, The Row.

On the success of their multiple lines, including the Row, Ashley says, “I feel like it’s been this constant slow growth but a consistent growth.” Mary-Kate adds, “all the companies run on their own.” We get it Mary-Kate, you’ve only been in forty two movies. You’re obviously incredibly lazy.

10 Macs to Make the Rain Rain Go Away

The world may not have ended, but the skies of Manhattan have sunken down into a rainy stupor leaving our spirits a little dampened. 2. Emma Cook: Not your typical poncho, this one has the capacity to enhance your outfit, rather than covering it horrifically, as so many ponchos do. And it will be good to you during a potentially rainy festival season.

3. Peacocks: A cheapie mac from across the pond, where it rains, all the time. Printed leopard. Rawr.

4. Ann Demeulemeester: Drawstrung up in silver, the lapel alone is worth the wear.

5. Jil Sander: As gray as the day is long, yet as olive as my filthy martini, this coat can make a splash.

6. Topshop: Brings me back to a skirt I had during my middle school Spice Girls days – deep blue and plastic. But what I really really really want is zigazig ahh.

7. ModCloth: Red and rubber with an inner whale.

8. American Apparel: Down with a cinch, up with a hood.

9. Moncler: The dolman cuts it short for warmer weather drizzle.

10. Burberry: Cropped and caped, shrug it dry.

As umbrellas are quite the temporary fixture – lost or broken almost immediately – pick up a cute printed guy at H&M for cheap.

And I continue to stand by a solid flatform in the rain. Because weather is no excuse for shlump. In fact, there is no excuse. Stay classy. Stay dry.
