Taylor Swift Plays The Hunger Games Safe & Sound

Edited by

The Hunger Games has been translated sonically by one Miss Taylor Swift; a fitting match for the young series with broad appeal. Safe & Sound, the haunting tip-toe through a murky forest touches on the unease that carries Katniss Everdeen‘s perilous story. The song’s slow breathy quality  with The Civil Wars‘ drum lines and harmonies throw the warlike melancholia into sharp relief. Lines of love along signs of horror is how The Hunger Games satiates, but let’s hope the movie doesn’t brood quite so much as this music video.

Meryl Streep and “The Artist” Win Big at the 2012 BAFTA Awards

Edited by

While music was celebrating its biggest night in Los Angeles, over on the other side of the pond, film was having a classy evening all its own. Meryl Streep racked up her second BAFTA win for The Iron Lady, but lost her stiletto on her way to the stage. The Artist, however, truly stole the show with a total of seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius. With the Academy Awards basically around the corner, it’s a safe bet that The Artist and Dujardin are the picture and actor to beat – respectively – and with this win, Meryl might be well on her way to claiming her third Oscar statuette. Full list of the 2012 BAFTA winners after the jump.

Edited by

You know what Viola DavisScreen Actors Guild Award says, “I beat Meryl.” The divine Ms. Davis won the Best Actress trophy last night, over fellow acting heavyweights Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton, Glenn Close and of course Meryl Fucking Streep. Viola’s co-star in The Help, Octavia Spencer, continued her victory lap over the course of awards season with another Best Supporting Actress win, while the 1960s civil rights drama beat out Oscar front-runner The Artist for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award, the equivalent of Best Picture. The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin, however, triumphed over bona fide A-listers George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio to win the Best Actor prize and Captain Von Trapp himself, Best Supporting Actor winner Christopher Plummer, is all but guaranteed an Oscar for his role in The BeginnersThe Oscars are still four weeks away and while this awards year has been a bit of a snooze, the race is shaping up to be anyone’s game. “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” Meryl and George Win Big at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Edited by

Hollywood’s wildest night was a bit on the tame side as the 2012 Golden Globes lapsed into occasional coma. Host Ricky Gervais was more well-behaved and seemingly less drunk this year than last — a bad decision on both counts —  though there was some well-played shtick regarding Jodie Foster‘s Beaver. The stars, however, came prepared with their own jokes with the best comeback of the night courtesy of Best Original Song winner, Madonna. After being introduced by Gervais, Madge quipped: “If I’m just like a virgin, Ricky why don’t you come over here and do something it? I haven’t kissed a girl in quite a few years…” A collective snap arose from the Beverly Hilton after the Material Girl dropped that sass bomb, though to be fair, she’s been on a roll as of late. The rest of the night was a series of mild shock — mostly thanks to Angelina Jolie‘s inspiring scary skeletal frame — and even milder surprises thanks to a few upsets in the TV category where shows no one watches nabbed some of the top prizes while  in the film category. No one was shocked, however, when Meryl Streep won Best Actress in a Drama, except Meryl Streep, who garnered another Globe for that reaction on her way up to accept for The Iron Lady. Full list of winners after the jump!
