I’d Take Birth Control If It Came in a Designer Pouch
Nina Garcia has found a new job. No she’s not helming Harpers Baazar, yet, instead the latin style goddette is judging a design competion for YAZ birth contol. Oh how the cookies crumbled. While I am all for such competitions (we’ve helmed a few at fashion indie media) it’s disturbing to me that this is Nina’s first gig after her fresh booting from Elle. Not the way to go if you want to be taken seriously Nina.
What’s most interesting is that on their website, YAZ is still refering to Nina Garcia as “of Elle Magazine”. Did they not get the message?
So designers, if you want to get noticed by Nina Garcia (and more importantly win $10,000) be sure to submit some new packaging ideas for oral contraceptives. Sexy kind of. Details after the jump or head to PillPackMakeover.com for more …

Intern for W this Summer
Are you a college student who wants to be a stylist? Can you handle working for some of the biggest names in fashion?
W Magazine needs full time and part time interns for Fall ‘08, but be prepared to work 2-5 days a week, for 8 - 12 hours a day. And be able to justify working for free to Conde Nast by either being a real college student with a lot of free time, or a fake college student with a plausible explanation for why you have a semester off.
You will be working in the W fashion closet, calling in clothes, helping to pack for fashion shoots, and occasionally assisting on sets. You will be really bored and really stressed unless the only thing you have ever wanted to do is work at a fashion magazine. So be ready…
If you can handle that, email Garrett_Munce@condenast.com with a quick explanation of why you will work until you collapse for nothing, and your Fall ‘08 schedule.

Photographer Turned Fashion Designer
New York-based photographer Dom Smith has fused his striking photographic aesthetic with his love of fashion to create a unique range of T-shirts under his own AntoineDom label. Smith’s tees are cut longer and slimmer than most of the mass-produced men’s tees on the market, making them the perfect complement to a pair of skinny jeans and boots. The images adorning the jerseys are taken from Smith’s extensive portfolio and include fashion portraits as well as still lifes. Particular favorites of ours are the trash bag caught in barbed wire and the pensive, black frame-bedecked “officer.”

Fashion Controversy: Is It Still Fashion Design If You Use a Butterick Pattern?
A few weeks ago we posted a story on a St. Louis designer, AFV by Ashley Dayley, who was set to showcase her looks with 5 other designers at an event at the contemporary art museum. Well, according to an outraged reader of Fashion Indie, the designer is a “ripoff” for using a Butterick pattern (specifically number 6015) to create her dresses. We have the Teresa H’s comment below…
Many of us in the online design/sewing community were flummoxed, and some rather outraged, when a very popular reissued pattern (Butterick 6015) showed up on the runway - credited to Ashley Dayley as an original design but was a complete ripoff (and copyright infringement) of this pattern and its original designer.
It’s astonishing the lack of integrity, and utter cluelessness that this designer showed in presenting this as her own “design”.
“Dayley called it vintage sexy.” the St. Louis Times wrote. We call it “ripoff.”
Now we’ve done some research (shockingly we do try some actual reporting sometime) and we found the original Butterick pattern that one of our readers referenced.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any photos of AFV by Ashley Dayley to prove our reader correct, but we’re working on it.
Aside from that, is it really cheating when a designer uses a pattern from a company like Butterick? Isn’t the whole “Vintage Revival” movement all about using these patterns with new fabrics to make them modern? I personally don’t see anything wrong with a designer using a Butterick pattern since these we’re sold for the purpose of creating clothes. Yes some one else designed the pattern, but you designed the dress by picking the fabrics and crafting the dress, right?
Fortunately another Fashion Indie reader agrees with me. Read her comment below in response to Teresa H…
Someone here must be the Rainman of fashion…or a chronically bored person with too much time on their hands. Ashley, and other designers world wide have used shapes as well as patterns to design or create a newer, fresher version of a garment. If this blogger comment was given by a professional whom is a judge or editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine…I can understand to some degree. But why were THEY not featured at fashion week? Why were they never sought after for their amazing original clothing line? Hmmmm sounds to me like they are what I like to call being their “internet” self. How dare to comment about this young designer to ruin her good name. I thought her clothes were fresh, fun and frankly….better than a Butterick pattern.
Touche.

Project Runway’s Christian Siriano Searches for Interns on Craigslist

Can someone please do this for me? I have celebrities to impregnate with my fierceness.
Page Six just spotted this one.Project Runway winner Christian Siriano has been trawling on Craigslist for an “Assistant/Intern” (doesn’t that traditionally mean “unpaid help” in fashion-land?). The requirement of being his assistant included being able to take on his hot tranny rage and not being taller than 5 foot, unfortunately, for all you aspiring fashion assistants out there, the ad’s already down. Apparently, response was overwhelming. So much so that — and see below — Siriano resorted to a first-come, first-serve, kind of weird interview scheduling process.
