Gareth Pugh Parties with the Misshapes

Photo Illustration: Getty Images (nymag.com)
Fashion Week comes early this year. Dozens of designers are flying in for the MET Gala next week, but only one is throwing a party. Gareth Pugh will be playing nice with the MisShapes for a party that only a select elite will be able to get into (that means all of you indies). Definitely not the one to miss.

MIA’s Clothing Line Isn’t Really Worth Stealing, But In Case it Is…
Sri Lankan rapper and Marc Jacobs covergirl M.I.A. has a clothing line. I know very, very shocking that another celebrity has another clothing line. wow.
The self titled collection is inspired by M.I.A’s own tour gear and the tiny raptress wears the line while on stage. Made up of really bright bomber jackets, leggings and T-shirts, all done up in the bold hues and graphic prints for which the singer is known, the collection is available in London (but I’m sure there are some plans in the works to get them in the States soon).
Aside from being a perfect way to express you love of Paper Planes, M.I.A’s line also offers a bit of security from theft. Explains the pint-sized rhymesmith to WWD: “With my stuff, because everything’s really bright, if you lose it or someone steals it, you can see it from miles away and you can be like, ‘Oy! Give me my shirt back!’”
Of course the question remains, who would actually want to steal your neon bomber jacket? Aside from this guy, that is.

Diane Von Furstenburg Channels Her Superhuman Ability to Follow a Trend (and possibly beat a dead horse)

I might be hitting supehero overload. Last night I hit up an early showing of Iron Man with Rebecca and Lauren (totally worth seeing). Next week we’re heading to the Met to check out the Superhero exhibit and now we hear that Diane Von Furstenberg is creating a capsule collection in collaboration with DC Comics. In the immortal words of Joey Lawrence from Blossom, “Whoa!”
It seems we have finally hit a trend. The Superhero.
And rightfully so. In a world where war and terror are all around us (at least according to Fox News it is), we are all looking for a hero. Designers have picked up on this need and now clothing and outfits are hitting the runway inspired by Batman (Gareth Pugh) and plated like suits of armor (Balenciaga).
Diane, being the superwoman she is, has just followed the natural course of action. Skip the inspiration and go straight for the source. Wonder Woman, a lot like Diane, is the quintessential power femme. She’s an Amazonian with superior strength and the ultimate accessory, a lasso that makes men tell the truth. If ever there was a role model for women it’s this chick.
So congrats to Diane for grabbing the rights to this hot property. With a Wonder Woman movie already in the works, Furstenburger is sure to get props amongst fannies and fashionistas alike.
Hopefully Diane’s collection won’t be as cheesy as this fan made Wonder Woman preview. Although, a corseted wrap dress with stars and stripes might not be that far off.

You’re Such a Pain, Hedi Slimane
WWD reports that Hedi Slimane might be returning to the luxury house of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Diesel may be preparing to launch a Red Collection to be designed by Slimane.
Alright, I might actually care about this collaboration. Hedi was amazing for Dior. His departure felt abrupt and his influence has been missed in current collections. I’m glad Hedi will be off his ass and working again. Plus, Diesel needs this push. Their windows at Union Square have been making the once iconically downtown feeling brand looking like a hodgepodge of hipster approved neons and has given the brand an LA chicness that no self respecting fashion devotee can appreciate.
Bring on the glamor Hedi.

Hong Kong Phooey

Will they have the Hong Kong Sars masks? If we’re lucky, yes!!!
Hong Kong’s finest take up residence in NY for a full month to showcase some of Japan’s finest indie designers. Made in HK is a pop-up shop which will feature accessories, fashion, paper goods, and cultural ephemera which will make you feel like you just took a tip to land of the rising sun (of is that China).
These pop-shops are springing like daisy’s lately, which will probably be due to companies like (multiple choice). They are running the HK spot but plan to launch different projects which will take on different forms. The guerilla-retailer will be one not to miss so shop early and enjoy.

Pondering Alber Elbaz for Acne Jeans

Another day, another designer collaboration.
Alber Elbaz from Lanvin for Acne Jeans.
Everyone’s talking about it. Are you?
I’m not cause it’s just not that exciting to me. What can Alber possibly do to jeans that hasn’t already been done by better designers a million times before?
Maybe I’m just not as much as a sucker, but when a big name designer decides to partner with a company for something as specific as jeanswear, it usually means a bunch of overhyped, overpriced unstylish garbage which shouldn’t be worn by anyone with half a stylish braincell cause a) everyone will be able to identify it, which means b) you’re really starved for attention and c) you have too much money to spend on getting noticed.
So ladies, before you drop $500 for a pair of Acne Jeans (just thinking they’ll be in that range cause of Lanvin’s history) realize that no one thinks you’re as special as you believe yourself to be. Seriously, no one.

Holy Shit!!! Fashionista Sends Us Some Love

We are so in love with the Fashionistas right now. They just spotted our “Douche Bag” tote on Cafe Press and decided to show us some real love. I can here the registers at Cafe Press ringing now!!! Send us some money!!!
The full review below…
“It’s been a while since the last time we came across a spoof of the Anya Hindmarch “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” tote, but we think this one really beats them all.
Despite the bag’s popularity, and the good things we know came from it, we couldn’t help but burst out into laughter when we came across Fashion Indie’s “I’m Not a Douche Bag” tote on Cafe Press.
So seventh grade, and yet, so on point - we’d love to swing this around the Whole Foods salad aisle while enunciating our plans to offset the bag’s carbon footprint using only macrobiotic beets.”

Agyness Deyn, Derek Lam Play Host to Warhol

Agyness Deyn, Derek Lam and a slew of other celebrities play host to a private preview of Andy Warhol’s Double Marlon at The Soho Grand tonight. This event will be filled with a who’s who of fashionable types and celebs so it’s only appropriate that we crash it. Nothing says true Warhol more than rebellion (or is that commercialism). In a day when so much of Warhol’s work has been bastardized it’s refershing that there is still appreciation for his art, unaltered and not attatched to a national campaign for the GAP. You probably won’t get in, but if you’re the hotness you never know.

Uniqlo Art?

It’s no secret that Uniqlo is one of my favorite fast retailers to date. The store is a gallery of some of the best t-shirts you can find in the city at a price that is hard to pass up. Of course, just cause it’s a gallery, doesn’t make it art?
To celebrate their UT Project, in which the released way too many t-shirts for the shopping public, Uniqlo is unveiling The UT Gallery: a one-off exhibition space filled with portraits showcasing the collection.
According to Vogue, the exhibition features some 200 works, which were shot by photographer Matt Irwin. Along with stylist Nicola Formichetti, he embarked on a grass-roots search for starring talent, spotting his subjects in places as diverse as the streets of London and New York to MySpace. The images show up-and-coming artists, models and designers wearing some of the 700 UT Project Ts, including those by Eighties artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
So the question still remains, is this really art or just a marketing ploy to sell more t-shirts? Where are the limits of commerce and art and if this is art, what is it’s message? Personally, I don’t see the enjoyment of having photos of hipster types in t-shirts on my wall, do you?
The UT Gallery opens in London at Unit 4 & 5, The Old Truman Brewery, Dray Walk, London E1; call 020 8247 9200 for further information. (April 30 2008, AM)

I’d Take Birth Control If It Came in a Designer Pouch
Nina Garcia has found a new job. No she’s not helming Harpers Baazar, yet, instead the latin style goddette is judging a design competion for YAZ birth contol. Oh how the cookies crumbled. While I am all for such competitions (we’ve helmed a few at fashion indie media) it’s disturbing to me that this is Nina’s first gig after her fresh booting from Elle. Not the way to go if you want to be taken seriously Nina.
What’s most interesting is that on their website, YAZ is still refering to Nina Garcia as “of Elle Magazine”. Did they not get the message?
So designers, if you want to get noticed by Nina Garcia (and more importantly win $10,000) be sure to submit some new packaging ideas for oral contraceptives. Sexy kind of. Details after the jump or head to PillPackMakeover.com for more …

SuperHills Me Just Made My Night
I think the Fashionistas might be following our anti-Hills lead. For one single day they decided not to talk about the show or any of it’s characters. Could we be starting a trend on the fashion blogosphere?
Okay, maybe not cause everyone with at least half a brain cell knows this show is fucking idiotic. What I do appreciate are the comments left by their readers. Choice ones below…
I’m so glad you’re detoxing from the Hills. When i watch that show i feel my braincells melting with every utterly inept remark.
Those girls would be boring to listen to in person. I can’t believe people watch them on tv.
i can’t blame him, the hills is so whatever now, i mean the camera focused on about ten seconds of them (Lo, LC, Audrina) just chewing because there’s nothing interesting on anymore
The Hills is only revelant when the show have something about fashion ie Teen Vogue, People Revolution, Kelly Cutrone and fashion shows. I could care less about the sex tape-heidi-spencer drama.
I miss the brain cells I lose when I watch The Hills. But I’m addicted. I think my mind goes numb whenever I watch it. But I know it feels so good.
