FASHION INDIE
Fashion & Film. Yet Another Unoriginal Concept That’s Getting Way Too Much Attention
The sexy raspy voiced gypsy from A Shaded View of Fashion is curating a film festival. You know all you indies out there who get hard for the newest issues of Fantastic Man and V want to submit, so get ready to film some fun fashion movies.
I think I might actually work on one based around my life shot directly from the perspective of my belt buckle. Exciting, no?
I don’t get why this is such a huge medium for fashion right now. This is probably the third fashion film festival I’ve heard about this month. Can we think of other things to fuse fashion with or are we all out of ideas?
I’d suggest fashion and food. There’s one that’s not done enough.

Daniel Saynt Weighs In on Grandma Crazy Hats
To say I love this hat would be an understatement. I want to make sweet passionate love to this hat, bury it in the ground, and then raise the half-man, half-acorn creature that arises from the demon soil of our sin. Super kudos for Sarah Jessica Parker for being brave enough to rock this look, full well knowing that all of America would question her style (and her sanity).
What this proves is that London, where this hat was premiered along with some little independent film called “Sex and the City”, is just a little bit ahead of the game when it comes to fashion. Don’t be shocked or appalled, it was bound to happen when Gap decided to introduce a pair of skinny jeans called the Williamsburg. Ya see, what happened was that Brooklyn got too cool to fast, to the point where it’s almost not cool anymore. London took over with it’s House of Holland crew, Peaches, and Ms. Deyn. Now we’re a few steps behind, but it doesn’t mean we can’t catch up, which takes us back to the hat. Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to show punk-poshed Londoners that NY still has a crazy sense of style, we’re still trendsetters and we know how to show it (in her case it was an acorn sprouting from her head. In your case it can be finally giving up leggings).
So thanks for giving us one final chance to prove our style worth SJP. I’m sort of glad the movie premiered in London now. Let’s remind these funny speaking nancies why NYC can’t be out sexed, but most importantly, out styled.

Designer Discovery: Amy Sarabi
Get ready to know Amy Sarabi. The young designer made the scene last year at GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion, New Langton Arts What Is Luxury?, and the Arts of Fashion International Finals 2007. This year, she continues to build on her unique, mushroom inspired designs. A friend of fellow blogger Susie Bubble (the two went to school together in Hyeres), the designers aesthetic is technical and precise, which is in direct parallel to her giggly personality. Definitely a designer to watch.

Lauren Conrad Can’t Seem to Stop Designing

Don’t Move While Lauren Conrad Captures Your Soul
Here’s a quicky for you indies. Lauren Conrad, that chick from the brain draining The Hills (like you didn’t already know that), will be designing an accessories line for (drumroll please)… AVON!!
Thank god. I haven’t picked up an Avon catalog in, well, um, never cause I’m a dude and Avon’s for poor folk and Middle American’s (let the hate mail begin), so I will not be forced to vomit all over a copy of the pamphlet when I turn to the Lauren Conrad page filled with cheap ass jewelry and handbags for Avon’s Mark collection.
More after the jump.

First Project Runway, Then GenArt?
GenArt has always been a breeding ground for new talent, but it seems for the first time, it may have missed the boat on two young designers. Fortunately, they’re making up for it.
Project Runway’s Alison Kelly of Dahl and Jillian Lewis will be hitting the GenArt runway next Monday, after already being discovered by the producers of designer focused reality show. Yes, GenArt is supposed to “discover” talent, but I guess this time it was just easier to flick on the telly. No qualms though, we’ve worked with (and plan to continue working with) some amazing Runway talents including Malan Breton (heart of silk) and Zulema Griffin, so I guess it’s cool that the GenArt folks are starting to.
It would be rather amazing if Alison Kelly won top prize. She really does have a pretty awesome collection and it would be interesting to see if she could “make it” after runway.

First Look: Leigh Lezark for IMG Models
Holey Hipster Hang Ups Batman. It seems that Leigh is right on track to rule the runway. We just got sent some her comp card from IMG Models. The girl definitely knows how to strike a pose and with all the online buzz (hate that word) circulating about her getting signed, I’m sure it won’t be long before she lands a cover or two.
Watch your back Cory Kennedy, I knew scenesters going mainstream.

Ruffian Plays Nice With Earnest Sewn
Ruffian is taking over the back room at the Earnest Sewn store in the Meatpacking District. They will be selling their much sought after goods and installing a very worth checking out visual instillation with Anne Koch.
The theme: Boarding School Rebel.
No talks yet on whether Agyness will show up on opening day (she’s an avid fan of the brand) but there might be hopes to spot the over-exposed one at a party being held at Earnest Sewn to celebrate the opening. The parties on May 27th, which gives you ample time to shop for a pick up the perfect Ruffian outfit.

Calvin Klein: The Original American Apparel
Yeah, American Apparel ads are sexualized and pornographic, but Calvin Klein was playing this the creepy lensman theme way before it was accepted. Check out these banned CK ads, imagine the camera man is Terry Richardson, and pray that CK is smart enough to hire him to make these ads happen again with some of todays models. Dirty, Dirty.
PS. Number 5 is Bijou Philips

Stuff Fashion People Like #22 Karl Lagerfeld
Oh, Karl, you mad, cad man.
Karl Lagerfeld is the Godfather of fashion. Like a more fashionable Brando, Karl lights up a screen with a fervor that is ill adjusted, yet seemingly appropriate for his old age. Few designers hold such clout and deserved recognition in the fashion world as much as the white-haired-one, and his sense of style and understanding of youth culture is almost enough old fart credidation to make John McCain seem like a viable Presidential client. The posterboy for “I’ll Retire When I’m Good and Dead”, Karl’s long standing pact with the Devil (Wintour this time, though it is very possible that Karl will live to 100 for one he crafted with the actual prince of darkness) has ensured that he remains at the helm of two of the most powerful fashion brands in the world, Chanel and Fend.
Fashion people love Karl Lagerfeld. They have seen Lagerfeld Confidential. They have owned/lusted over/or rocked a bootleg Chanel bag in an attempt to connect to his genius. They have read and memorized The Karl Lagerfeld Diet. To all extents and purposes, Karl Lagerfeld is the fashionable father of every fashionista and gay boy who dreams of one day designing couture. He is grandpa fashion, and because of that there are a few rules you need to know when talking about him to other fashion people.
Rule Number 1. Karl Lagerfeld is not old. This is a hard one to swallow but one that must be obeyed for fear of retribution by the strictest of fashion devotees. Karl can be described as young at heart, in touch with the cultural generation, but mention his age (about 75 years old) and you might be castrated.
Rule Number 2. Karl Lagerfeld is a genius. He has never really done anything but design, but he is a genius. You should be ready to quote his accomplishments and favorite collections. If you don’t, fashion people will assume you are an idiot and ignore you until you lose 93 pounds on his diet.
Rule Number 3. Karl Lagerfeld understands youth. He runs two major fashion labels which appeal to rich kids. He’s friends with the Olsen Twins. And he’s in Grand Theft Auto 4. Let’s see your grandpa try to accomplish that shit.
Rule Number 4. Karl Lagerfeld wears his sunglasses at night. The theory behind this is that Karl died while trying to lose all that weight. He was replaced by a robot since Chanel and Fendi had invested shit loads of cash into his career. The glasses hide his dead, mechanical glare. The gloves, his exposed wires. Every fashion person is aware of this fact but fear that Lagerfeld Bot 2000 will sneak into their homes at night and strangle them with a Chanel handbag strap has kept anyone from exposing the truth. If you are ever in his presence it’s best to not make any direct eye contact. He can read your retinal pattern and identify you immediately. Once your in his database you’re marked for life so be careful.
Rule Number 5. Karl Lagerfeld wants to get into Hedi Slimane’s pants. It’s true.
(Knock at the door)
Daniel Saynt - “Who is it?”
Mechanical voice from the other side of the door - “It is your good friend Karl Lagerfeld. Would you like to hang out and play an invigorating game of Grand Theft Auto 4. Yo.”
(Loud beeps and bloops.)
Daniel Saynt - “No thanks man, I’m working. Maybe later.”
(Door busts open)
Lagerfeld Bot 2000 - “Does not compute. Does not compute. Kill. Kill. Kill”
Daniel Saynt - “No, please don’t. I’m just a lowly blogger. No. Agggg!!! I Fucking” *cough “hate” *choking “Chanel” Uggh!!
