Oh, How Much is That 11 Dollar Bill?

martin margiela line 11 billfold wallet - highsnobiety

Martin Margiela Line 11 billfold wallet is just about the coolest thing I’ve spotted this week. Layered to look like a wad of cash, the 11 Billfold is made from leather and paper to keep it looking authentic. Of course at $375 bucks, it’s a bit more expensive than printing your own money. Find it at AR.

The Well Dressed Rebel in GQ April 2008

I must admit that GQ has been one of my must reads from the tender age of 13. This issue brought about some major shifts in what’s ok for the distinguished gentleman to wear.  “The Well Dressed Rebel” highlight’s some of menswears most prolific rule breakers offering tips like wear a ton of jewelry, wear tuxedo jackets with jeans, and don’t skimp on the brightly colored socks. Who knew rebelling was so forulamatic?

Some of those featured include Saks’ Michael Macko, photographers Nathaniel Goldberg and Wayne Maser, designers Phiip Crangi, Andy Spade, Paul Smith, Barker Black’s Creative Director Derrick Miller, and Coach VP Walker MacWilliam among others. View the story here.

Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair Fall 2008

Swedish label Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair finds inspiration in conserving tradition as well as breaking those same norms. The label is inspired by an old shoemakers shop in London that has gone from generation to generation passing on knowledge in craftsmanship and traditions of this old profession.

Since classic tailoring, pattern making and authentic knowledge always stays a priority and a necessity in the collections the label was named Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair in 2004. The designers, Astrid Olsson and Lee Cotter focus on a creative draping technique where the silhouette progresses through sculpting. In contrast, advanced shapes are combined with classic wear such as the old man’s chino or the classic white shirt. Attention to detail and love of fabrics is something they work hard to achieve.

John Varvatos Opens on the Bowery

JOHN VARVATOS CBGBJohn Varvatos opened his new boutique at 315 Bowery this weekend — the former address of New York’s CBGB. According to Varvatos, who took MTV News on a tour of his latest store, the club’s original walls — punched-in holes, cracked paint and all — went untouched, as did the antiquated ventilation system that runs throughout the space.

It remains, along with the graffiti and band stickers, some of them hanging by a strand of glue. The staircase leading to what once were the club’s restrooms, which have now been converted into storage space, is still covered in marker and stickers.

John’s love of music and rockstars allowed him to have a heart in preserving this monument to the 80’s wave of punk that once dominated New York. We’re excited about his promise of monthly bands and his must have spring collection.

Hyden Yoo Fall 2008

We first met Hyden Yoo when he launched his collection several years ago and we are amazed how far the line has evolved.  No longer strictly high quality, great fitting woven shirts with a slightly shorter cut than traditional dress shirts, Hyden Yoo is now a full collection of knits, trousers, jackets, and of course, wovens. Yoo describes it as Wall Street meets Brooklyn hipster. We describe it as must have now!!!

Advice from Paul Marlow of Loden Dager

This month’s installment of wisdom comes from a man who will trounce you thoroughly in a moustache-off. Paul Marlow is one of the sartorial gurus at Ecco Domani award-winning NYC menswear label Loden Dager. Paul took some time away from keeping your personal aesthetic taste in check to let you know about a few things you should take into consideration the next time you are feeling a little lost out there…

A man should always have an opinion.

A man should never rule out other possibilities.

A man Is in serious trouble when he hesitates.

If you can’t have a plan, at least have a direction.

Personally, I find repetitious apologies repulsive, because at some point, you have to learn.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. When in need, a clandestine trip to Mustique will make everything better.

There is not much better in this world than the feeling of uncontrollable laughter.

If there ever were a rule that begged on its knees to be broken, it is casual fridays.

Boutique Critique : Endovanera

Endovanera’s new store got a great write up on Urban Daddy:

“Occasionally, your quest for original attire takes you to some pretty strange places.Like a secret, signless store cloaked in the dark shadow of a dingy overpass. Which is where you’ll find Front St., the just-opened shop from burgeoning label Endovanera. Pronounced “end of an era”—so subversive, these fashion people—the line began attracting attention last fall.

The next step, of course, was to set up shop in a run-down (and thus officially credible) Echo Park building—a small “1154″ above the door is the only confirmation you’re in the right spot. Inside: concrete floors, salvaged light fixtures and just a few minimalist racks of the well-cut basics a rock star might wear to a business meeting—grey vests, slim black pants, well-cut black-and-white button-downs and military-inspired coats. If you see something you like but it’s not quite right, the on-site design studio, behind the white curtain, is filled with Japanese fabrics and Italian denim for all your customization needs. The proprietors can recreate that military coat in a different color, for example, or build a pair of jeans from scratch. So you can stand apart from even those who stand apart.”

How Tight Do You Like It?

Men in Scandinavia are videotaping themselves wearing an insanely, ball crushing, testicular torturing brand of tight (also see painted on) jeans called Mustang Skinlines and putting them up on YouTube. Umm…you’d think a photo would be sufficient, but these fashion exhibitionists feel the need to give you a full 360 degree live-action video tour of just how tight their jeans are, which is tight, as in is there really anything happening between them legs. We hope this trend never reaches middle America or we may have a new crop of muffin tops hitting the streets.

On a more serious note, isn’t this just a bit excessive?  You should be able to let your genitalia hang a bit to prevent damaged cojones, right.  I think the only ones who can make this look work are the boys who don’t have much to work with in the twig and berries department, or those who prefer being infertile to being out of style.

Designer Discovery - Clemens en August

Founded by Alexander Brenninkmeijer (of European textiles giant C&A) in 2004, the German label Clemens en August combines old-fashioned craftsmanship with a unique business model. Each collection, limited to 40 minimal yet funky staples, is available for only three days at a gallery or museum on a worldwide tour of select cities, thus avoiding the expense of a shop or ad campaign. These impromptu images—with latex parkas by Clemens en August— were taken in the last pit stop of Zurich, at the Hauser & Wirth gallery.  The label is holding court at the Goethe Institute in New York (1014 Fifth Avenue @ 83rd St., March 29 - April 1), followed by trips to Berlin, Munich and London.  So if you love limited editions, be sure to get to the Goethe TODAY!!!    - Courtesy Hint
