I met Robot years ago in a Soho Starbucks; his radical fur bow tie begged a conversation. Last night at the StyleLikeU party, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the other half, Brucling (pronounced Bruce Ling, see below) over a dangerously studded leather jacket and an open tequila bar. I learned that the Alacran Tequila drinks are strong and Brucling does custom studding. The duo, Robot & Brucling, makes break-neck bow ties that will either spark a conversation, or make others fear you slightly. Either way, stunning.

Hyden Yoo used debonair dressing and the sometimes overwhelming unattainable beauty of a woman to tell the story behind his Autumn/Winter 2012 collection. Set in a darkly wooded library with vaulted ceilings, models stood in clusters – the men in layers and the women dressed and ready to stay right there in the warmth of the fireplace – looking bored as can be. Though both sexes were polished and narcissistic in demeanor, the men were on a higher pedestal in my eyes.

Color palette: Muted browns and greys for the men. Women wore blues and purples with a floral print here and there.

Henrik Vibskov is an installation artist featured in MoMa and museums and galleries worldwide, and he’s the drummer for Trentmøller. This Central Saint Martens grad is also the only Scandinavian on the official Paris show roster and has put out 20 collections in the past decade. Henrik Vibskov is creating exhilarating menswear that embraces color and outspoken silhouettes in a wearable way, fusing radical shapes with traditional tailored pieces. The sculptor within him ensures his stores and presentations are ever changing by his own hands. His Soho store is a feast for the eyes up to the ceiling, and also features other designers aligned with his philosophy, like SVSV, Comme des Garçons and Bernhard Willhelm. He’s a chill, multi-talented man, making clothing for equally interesting gentlemen across the world. His Fall 2012 collection is here.

Great Danish designer Asger Juel Larsen is liberating man from the confines of boredom. He celebrates the evolving man with collections that reference welders and the men of 1930s boiler rooms, building armor-like structures out of tough leather and quilted PVC, and Androids, again fusing fabrics of luxury with that of utility. Having honed his skills to a masters level at London College of Fashion, his vision has been unrestrained by creative direction and his eye is sharp. Now in Spring 2012, he visits a man who is actually quite vulnerable in all his strength. He’s a post-punk sleek neo-gothic, taking the genre to new depths and sense of class. His breadth is vast, and thus, see a bit of a premature retrospective here. We can be sure there is more to come.

Asger Juel Larsen describes each collection with such intimate detail, allowing you discover his intentions more clearly. He describes the fabrics he uses and why, in a form close to poetry. It’s worth the trip over to his website to read his insight.

London Finally Decides to Man Up: Introducing London Men’s Fashion Week…end

Since time immemorial, men’s fashion in London has been relegated to the sidelines, tacked onto the last day of London Fashion Week when all the ladies have strutted their stuff and all the editors are running off to Milan. But no longer. The British Fashion Council has announced the creation of London Collections: Men, a full three days of menswear shows and presentations debuting in June.

Designers including Aquascutum, Christopher Raeburn, E. Tautz, J.W. Anderson and TOPMAN will show from Friday, June 15 through Sunday, June 17, immediately preceding the men’s fashion weeks in Milan and Paris — meaning those limey labels can finally capitalize on all the sartorial testosterone running through Europe. Tom Ford and Christopher Kane are among the members of the committee overseeing London Collections: Men, headed by British GQ editor Dylan Jones.

The news of this new men’s fashion weekend delivers on BFC CEO Caroline Rush’s promise that “Menswear in London will be put in the spotlight this year,” made shortly after James Long became the first menswear designer to win one of the Council’s Fashion Forward prizes. [Telegraph]

Dolce & Gabbana Mens Runway A/W 2012

And so today starts our coverage of Men’s Fashion Week. Our first feature is the Dolce & Gabbana A/W runway show from Milan.

Beautiful and ornate are just 2 of the words that I would use to describe the latest collection from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. vBeside the usual well-tailored black tuxes Dolce & Gabbana sent down some out of this world creations. Some of our personal faves included fur trims, crazy embroidery and all knit everything.

While checking out the photos from the show we saw many looks and thought “Wait, is that pajamas as casual wear or just pajamas” or “Is that underwear or just really short shorts and knit trousers.” If you look really closely you can see that most of the accessories are as overly lavish as the garments themselves. As far as design I would definitely say it’s a step further than their Spring collection.

Axe to Release Anarchy on Men and Women: Scent Goes Unisex-y

Axe Body Spray – otherwise known as that pungent aroma that hits you like a ton of oddly-scented bricks whenever driving through Jersey, passing by a teenage boys’ locker room, or dropping it like it’s hot on a crowded dancefloor — was once only the domain of hormonally-raging young boys and men, but the times they are a-changin’. Axe introduces its first women’s scent today, the chaotically-themed Anarchy, perfect for the inevitable end of the world and/or beginning of a nation of questionably-smelling youth.

Though only 17% of men actually use body spray — most often in lieu of actually showering — Axe is by far the most popular choice, with a 74% share of the market; the majority of men prefer after shave (65%) or cologne (62%). On the other hand, 47% of women use body spray as compared to body lotion (59%), eau de parfum (43%) and eau de toilette (34%), so I guess it makes scents (*rimshot*) for Axe to target the fairer sex. However, can Axe appeal to women as it has so successfully appealed to men since 2002?

In the advertising campaign for Anachy, Axe attempts to level the playing field. As David Kolbusz, creative director of London-based ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty explains: “Before, an Axe commercial was always about a guy spraying himself and a girl being attracted, and Axe giving him an edge in the mating game, whereas now women also have something to spray on themselves, and consequently there’s more of an equilibrium between the sexes.”

Meanwhile, welcome to the 20th century, Axe.

As part of this new advertising strategy, there’s also more of an equilibrium between “the sexy.” According to Kolbusz, “Girls in Axe advertising will always be a little better-looking than the guys” but in the Anarchy ads the attractive gap is tightened “without the average guy feeling threatened.”

Axe is also introducing an interactive graphic novel through its Facebook where users can suggest plot twists and even be drawn into the action:

Marketing aside, the real question remains, will a girl really want to wear a scent traditionally associate with Guidos and pedos? That, of course, depends on what Anarchy smells like — thus Anarchy “for her” is only being offered in a limited edition, with the possibility of permanence depending on sales.

However, sales among women might not be Axe’s biggest concern. David Vinjamuri, an adjunct professor of marketing at New York University made this astute observation:“The moment you start talking to girls, you lose credibility with teenage boys.” It’s nice to know that advertising is just like puberty…only more awkward. How did you get started in fashion?

I grew up on New York City’s Upper West Side –not exactly the beach culture capital of the world! While getting my undergraduate degree in finance at Baruch College, I started working at Steven Alan. It’s there that I kind of fell into design, immersed in a fashion industry environment at a young age. I was so drawn to production that I balanced a full time job with a full course load. Eventually, the idea for Onia emerged and that’s when I struck out on my own.

How is Onia different than your run of the mill swim trunk?
Onia came from my own frustrating experience trying to find swimwear that was both functional and well-designed. The choices available in the market simply weren’t appealing or they literally fell apart. In creating Onia products we use unique fabrics, sourced from all over the world (Italy, Spain, England, etc.), to provide colors and patterns that are stylish but never garish. And all our hardware is custom made to endure a pounding in the surf.

Got any new year’s resolutions?

I try not to make resolutions because I never keep them, (I’ve tried going vegetarian, that always lasts a day, maybe 2)but if I were to make one it would be to take a vacation, it’s been a long time since I’ve done that.

Which new artists should we keep our eyes on for 2012?
I really like Azealia Banks, I’m also looking forward to Kendrick Lamar and Dillon Francis. All really dope up and coming artists.

What else are you looking forward to in 2012?
I’m looking forward to traveling more as well as dropping some new remixes. I got a few in the pipeline.

Fresh, refined and cool.

What will you be wearing on NYE?
I usually go tuxedo but I may have to break out my silver blazer. Makes me look like a human disco ball.

Gentlemen pull out those credit cards, Christian Louboutin’s men’s collection is opening a 1,035 sq. ft. men’s store in NYC’s Meatpacking district this Spring, giving you the opportunity to share the pricey red-soled habit with the ladies. Check out some styles after the jump.

The styles will range from patent leather loafers with pearl tassels ($2,095), to the edgier Rollerboy spiked velvet loafers ($1,295), to the more traditional white nappa leather Loubi Flats ($2295). Customers will even be able to personalize their shoes with bespoke embroidery that replicates their tattoos. Talk about bad-ass luxury.

How Steven Alan Gifts Himself for the Holidays

We caught up with Steven Alan today at the FashInvest event at FIT, where he spoke of the route he took to owning his eponymous powerhouse stores first in TriBeCa, then fusing a wholesale showroom for independent designers to his business, then designing lines for men and women, and now investing in other entrepreneurial ventures. Oh, and he’s got stores all over NY and CA. He does it all with grace and success, and deserves to gift himself something special for the holidays. We were curious: What would he want from his own store for the holidays? If you know this, then you’ll know what any dapper self-starting gentleman will want.

Highest on his wish list are a couple of his own Steven Alan designs. After all, he did create them out of wanting them in the first place.

The Neville Jacket is a definite go. His handpicked Italian wool is made durable and super soft by weaving it with nylon Herringbone. The suede elbow patches add strength and a rugged sophistication. And FYI, the cool contrasting buttons are vintage leather.

As are a pair of sturdy workman’s Lace Up Boot for which he collaborated with Thorogood. These chukkas have the Steven Alan touch, which means careful attention to detail – padded insoles, speed laces, and Vibram soles. And that bright contrast at the top of the sole gives the shoe, well, soul.

Naturally we’d imagine he’d already have these prized items in his possession, but he laughed and pondered, “I don’t know what’ll be left after the holiday shopping madness!”

So, if you spot him around in either of these, you’ll know Steven Alan got his wish. But if you happen to get the very last boot or Neville jacket for the man in your life, Steven will likely be just as happy.
