Moises is particularly enthusiastic about the environmental aspect of Moises Oscar. “My site will shed light on NPOs, nature and conservation, and eco-fashion,” he told Interview.

Now, it is as yet undetermined whether Oscar de la Renta will find a space for his own wares on moisesoscar.com, but seeing as he’s in the name, it somehow seems unavoidable. And we wouldn’t be sad – the father-son thing is kind of adorable.

Last year, Billy Reid took the top prize of $300,000, a year of mentorship and a bronze trophy. The two runners-up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo each took home $100,000 and a year of mentoring. This year, the judges are Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler (who join the committee for the first time this year), Mark Holgate of Vogue, Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey and Nordstrom, Steven Kolb of the CFDA, Reed Krakoff of Coach, Jenna Lyons of J.Crew, Andrew Rosen of Theory, Diane von Furstenberg of the CFDA, and of course the Queen herself, Anna Wintour of Vogue.

That’s right, I’m a photographer, covering a very prominent part of our culture. I shoot nightlife — and what aspect of our society is more riddled with crazy fashion than nightlife – it’s our time to shine – strip off those work clothes (for those of us who have jobs) and hit the town to get fucked up.

And so because of my excessive drinking and creeping on hot chicks, FashionIndie and I have teamed up to bring you a sorta-weekly blog that I call: Pretty & Plastered! (which for argument’s sake may not always contain plastered people, but will ALWAYS contain pretty people)

The event was held at the legendary Roosevelt Hotel’s Tropicana Bar and Pool – with the sweltering heat in the city, the FashionIndie team can’t help but be envious!

Guests, including Kendra Wilkinson and other Hollywood personalities, were treated to a Macy’s swimwear and lingerie show and complementary Alizé cocktails and Peroni Beer at the poolside bar. Sounds like paradise to us!

The L.A. Times claimed the event would “feature special guests, DJ sets and a few surprises.” A few surprised, indeed! Cee Lo Green, half of the funk duo Gnarls Barkley and host on NBC’s new singing competition The Voice, was set to host the event but was unable to at the last minute. Luckily, the L.A. Times was able to bring in Jay Sean to fill in, and the event went on without a hitch (Forget You, Cee Lo!).

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are living the high life as of late, with a CFDA Award nomination and a successful brood of fashion lines under their boho belts. The sisters, notorious for their grungy, “hobo chic” style, recently dished to Style.com about their inspiration:

Ashley: That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection.

Mary Kate: For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?

A: Yeah, we were California girls.

MK: I think it was probably that. And laziness.

And there you have it; the purveyors of granny chic themselves have chalked it up to a combination of being cold and lazy.

Yet the Olsens are anything but lazy, competing with the likes of Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the CFDA Awards, and micromanaging ever aspect of their fashion line, The Row.

On the success of their multiple lines, including the Row,  Ashley says, “I feel like it’s been this constant slow growth but a consistent growth.” Mary-Kate adds, “all the companies run on their own.” We get it Mary-Kate, you’ve only been in forty two movies. You’re obviously incredibly lazy.

As Formichetti told Hint, “I had his picture on my wall forever. I saw it one day on Google. I thought it was amazing Halloween make-up done by Peter Philips or something.”

We all know by now that that shit is permanent. Well, Formichetti went on to find Zombie Boy’s true identity and to find him on Facebook, and whisked him away to Paris (having paid his near 20 thousand dollar fines for sleeping in the street, and also having gotten him a passport in record time), to have him model in his debut men’s show.

Tom Gunn uses the finest Italian leathers and exotic skins. They did study the craft at the Ars Arpel School in Milan, after all. They’ve created an array of heights from the disco-clog-platform sandal to the flat jazzy lace ups. The creamy pumps have an angular jut of color, and the heel is cut like a diamond. The skin sneaking cutouts at the bottom lean a little gladiator, but they seem to look future-ward rather than back.

I think Tim Gunn would approve of what’s going on here. Carry on.

Robert was shot by Boo George for Arena Homme magazine and will soon be seen  in a major UK brand’s television ad campaign. I, for one, wholly support this trend. And it has absolutely nothing to do with my daddy issues.

An alum of Roberto Cavalli and Gianfranco Ferré, Victor Bellaish has done time at some of Europe’s finest design houses. He launched his line Maison Bellaish in 2006, and his work is just as fine – the designs, handmade in Israel, focus on silk, lace and feathers. The collection is sold exclusive at the Maison Bellaish Atelier in New York.

If you want to be eco-friendly and not look trashy like KeSha, Leticia Garcia has the tonic. The model turned designer uses recycled fabrics for her line Lekuin, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Sara Roka’s cotton shirtdress

After Vancouver native Sara Roka‘s 2009 capsule collection flopped, she dusted herself off and launched a shirt-centric label in 2010. Perfect for the girl with effortless style, her ruffled blouses, shoulder-baring dresses and puff-sleeved tops go above and beyond the basic white tee. Her collection is available at Gregory’s in Dallas, Nia Roma in Rome and Bugatti in Dubai.

Courtney Bennett and Stephanie Giorgio don’t have design backgrounds, and maybe that’s what makes their line Penumbra so eclectic. Penumbra means “partial illumination” or “between dark and light.” Their clothes, mostly draped and cut from rayon jersey or sand-washed silk, transition well between day and night. Joy Cioci, fresh from her recent experience working under Tom Ford and Oliver Theyskens, is debuting her fall 2011 line at New York Fashion Week in February. Expect cool and sophisticated cocktail wear with deep-v backs and sexy silk separates. Fall’s inspiration, Cioci adds, “is the way light can embrace an object. So the colors are muted and washed out, and there’s a sense of freedom with the silhouettes and shapes.”

If you’re dreaming of white suit that doesn’t belong in Miami, designer Zoë Jordan has the classic tailoring skills to meet your expectations. Her line Irwin & Jordan is clean and feminine with a boyish edge and falls somewhere between classic and avant garde. “You’ve got Vivienne Westwood on one hand and Ralph Lauren on the other,” she says. “We sit somewhere in the middle.” The label is available at LouisBoston and Arcade Boutique in West Hollywood.

Native New Yorker Norisol Ferrari believes in lamb and deer leather, garments signed by the seamstress and NYC manufacturing. “I am a born and raised New Yorker,” Ferrari said. “This city made me. I feel indebted to it.” Her line of leather, suede, lamb and deer is sold in Maxfield in Los Angeles.

Walking through the Hester Street Fair at the beginning of summer, I was struck by fancy when I approached the Corvus Noir table. I admired the gorgeous, re-worked vintage jewelry, tried on a few pieces and thought about them all day. I serendipitously got to meet Lauren soon after, and I can’t get enough of hanging out with her.

Recently, Lauren took me out to the antique malls and flea markets where she hunts for her vintage pieces, showed me her closet and the Corvus Noir studio. I bring you an interview and photos from our trip so you can take a peak into her inspirational world.

I know this question might be over-asked, but what made you want to start designing jewelry? Was it a person or particular piece or a calling from the heavens?

I have always had a love for fashion, and I wanted to be a clothing designer in high school. I was never very good at sketching and can’t sew, so jewelry seemed like the best alternative. I took a trip to a local bead store, picked some beads that I liked and made a necklace without any jewelry knowledge. When I saw I had the ability to create jewelry with my own two hands, I was hooked on it. For the last year I have found my calling designing reworked vintage jewelry, my favorite style.

You talk a lot about your grandmother’s style and showed me her jewelry and bags. What about her personal style influences your personal style? And if it influences you when working, how does it influence your designs?

My grandmother was a very fashionable woman. She loved to dress up all the time, head to toe, and would never leave the house without being completely “done up.” I think I am most influenced by her mix of high and low fashion when I style myself. She would pair a $20 costume jewelry pin with diamond and gold pieces or a Chanel bag with a polyester top. She always knew what looked good together and price was never important. I definitely dress with that in mind. I shop at stores like H&M and Zara and will mix those clothes with vintage. I also love to mix fine jewelry with my costume vintage jewelry. My grandmother had a huge love for jewelry. I think it was her favorite part of getting dressed in the morning. She could afford to only wear the “good stuff,” but she loved her costume pieces just as much as her real jewelry. She always wore a brooch, mostly animal designs, and I tend to look for those most when shopping for Corvus Noir.

When you’re shopping for pieces, what do you look for? Is it what catches your eye at the moment, or do you go through phases where you look for certain styles and specific objects?

I tend to look at everything when I shop for jewelry, my eyes just get drawn everywhere. I sometimes go with a list and look for particular items such as vintage gold-filled pencils and pen knives, animal pins, lockets and cameos. But I try to look with an open mind and let a particular piece I stumble upon draw me in. Price is also a huge factor for me when shopping. I always set a strict budget per piece so I can keep my jewelry reasonably priced for my customers. No matter how beautiful a piece of jewelry is, I usually will not buy it if it is out of budget. Sometimes I have to break that rule, but when that happens, I tend to keep the piece for my personal archives.

We went to so many great places when you took me out to the antique centers and the garage. What is your favorite place to shop for your jewelry and why?

I love to shop at antique centers and flea markets in NYC and Connecticut for vintage and antique jewelry. I prefer to buy vintage because I believe the quality is better, I find them more unusual and beautiful and I love to wear things that no one else will have. You will never find me in a wholesale jewelry store. I prefer quality over quantity. I also love to shop at independent jewelry stores such as Catbird in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They have a great collection of beautifully curated jewelry made by local, young designers. I love to support other independent artists when jewelry shopping for myself.

Who are some of the jewelry designers from the past that influence and inspire you? What about modern day?

My favorite jewelry designer of the past is David Webb, who made beautiful fine jewelry out of any animal you can think of in the 70s and 80s. Zebras, panthers, owls – you name it, he’s done it. His jewelry is composed of striking enamel shades with yellow and white gold, diamonds and gorgeous gemstones. I also love vintage Cartier jewelry from the panther collection, hence my love for animal pieces. Pamela Love is a modern designer who I love; she makes macabre metal jewelry. My favorites are her bird claw bracelets and rings and her crow skull pendants. I also love unsigned vintage jewelry. My favorite, which I have yet to add to my collection, is Victorian Mourning Jewelry. People would engrave lockets, rings and pins with a loved one’s initials who had passed on and would have a braided lock of his or her hair inserted into the jewelry. Some were hidden in lockets and some were placed under glass so everyone could see the braid when worn. I am dying to add a few mourning rings to my personal jewelry collection.

I got a chance to look at your wardrobe and accessories, and you have such unique and impressive taste and style. Who are some of your favorite designers outside of the jewelry industry?

I can’t afford him yet, but I love Alexander Wang. I love, love, love his leather bags and shoes, especially his bag that is covered in studs on the bottom. I also love anything by Erin Featherston. Her designs are so romantic and have a great vintage feel to them. My favorite designer however is Rodarte. I love everything about their clothing – the beautiful mix of patterns and colors and all of their knit work. Their dresses look like they were painted on the body.

What trend(s) are you loving at the moment? Is there something you’re constantly looking for when you’re shopping right now?

I buy mostly vintage in my wardrobe but will mix it with basics from H&M and Urban Outfitters. Right now I am obsessed with 90s dresses in floral patterns. I love mini dresses and long maxi dresses, which will look perfect during fall when worn with boots and a tight fitted leather jacket. I also love to collect vintage wool sequined shell tops from the 60s. They are covered in amazing colored sequins, and I wear them unzipped over tops and dresses as vests. I have quite the collection of blazers now, vintage and new, which I love to wear with leggings and a top or with a dress and heels for night. I also collect vintage dinner jackets in fantastic silk patterns and sequins. The louder and more colorful the better. Anything with an animal print is also a favorite of mine. I am looking to add a vintage faux fur coat to my closet.

Wingate Prints are a unique collection of printed cushions, t-shirts, napkins, aprons, curtains and gift tags, all designed as a celebration of architectural vision and artistic creativity.

FI: You’ve recently collaborated with Lorenzo Martone and Urban Outfitters. What’s the one brand or person you want to collaborate with now?

JK: I would love to collaborate with Boudicca. It is difficult to find a brand which speaks a similar language in the fashion world.

There is something simple, elegant, yet poignant about their vision.

FI: Your currently launching a higher end collection. What was your inspiration for the line and what made you want to launch it now?

JK: “Bijules Haute: Le Nez de Tycho” is inspired by the life and stories of Danish Renaissance alchemist, Tycho Brahe. He just could not get on with this one guy and so Tycho was challenged by having a pistol-stuffed glove thrown at his feet. In the duel, his nose was shot off and in response he created his own gold prosthetic version.

I wanted to combine the ritual of dueling, the theory of alchemy (Jules Kim is THE modern day alchemist, what what), and the dainty elegance of a southern debutante. (I’m from Richmond, VA- southern belle-central) the 6 pieces are highly conceptual and loaded with history.

FI: With the swimwear collection you created with Lorenzo you’ve entered into the world of apparel. Can we expect a Jules Kim fashion label in the near future?

JK: Ha, mayyyybe…but clothes are too easy. They are everywhere, it is not a marketplace that needs another face. I would prefer to make statements in worlds that need new vision.

FI: You’re a global traveler, what are some of your favorite spots to shop around the world?

JK: I adore Paris for its super saturated history. The south of Italy is bitterly quiet (I’m scared of silence, thanks a lot New York) yet extremely inspiring. I would love to go to my motherland, well actually my fatherland because my father is Korean.

FI: Where to you draw your inspiration from?

JK: Everything. Literally I am open to absorbing new stories, new things, new challenges…

FI: You seem to be a celebrity magnet with Beyonce and Nicole Richie spotted in your designs. Who would be the dream person to wear one of your pieces, fictional, dead or alive?

JK:  I love that I am part of fueling pop culture. I would have loved to make something for my line’s muse, Tycho Brahe and of course I would adore miss Grace Jones in my new smoking lip piece…
FI: What advice would you give to young designers?

JK: Take risks and do not ever doubt your role as a creator.

FI: Do you have any hidden talents no one knows about?

JK: Um, I used to play flute. I had to stop because I was bothered by the fact that classical music rarely leaves room for improvisation or alterations on staid themes.

FI: What’s playing on your iPod right now?

JK: The Sleighbells are the shit, go Alexis! Also my new fave repeat track is Higher Places- On Giving Up.

FI: If you weren’t in fashion today, what would you be doing?

JK: Most likely I would be creating something…art or music as I am most comfortable in positions of expression!

FI: What do you do when you have free time?

JK: Whats that? I love my friends and spend as much time with them as possible, long walks on beaches, sunsets and shit-

What’s the inspiration behind the SS11 collection?

The inspiration for SS11 is 1970 cinematography with its desaturated washed out colours and seriocomic storylines, laces and corsetry, Jackson Pollock and Scandinavian concepts of beautiful utilitarian design.

What are some concepts, movements, era, people, music etc that have impacted the design of the collection and why?

The designs are very classic utilitarian, very 1930 Bauhaus style or Corbusier – simplified, well – designed, affordable art or architecture for your feet.

The last year I have been sharing the design studio with a trendy fixie bike shop and London based garage-synth-rock band Commissar, who use a lot of electronic noise in their music alongside machine like drums, which work like propaganda. After a while you can’t stop hearing drums banging – which would have been an impossible environment to design anything delicate and “quiet”. At first the band was rehearsing night times twice a week, which developed into daytime 6 hours 5 days a week and ultimately lead to us all being evicted from the warehouse unit.

The band definitely influenced that collection a lot, that’s why I called this collection “The Drum Machine”.

Because it was impossible to have any meetings at the studio I moved all my meetings to a café round the corner and therefore got most of opinions only from non-fashion-types, people that had never heard of Karl Lagerfeld etc, which was actually quite refreshing for a change – back to basics.

What do you expect will be some key items in the collection?

The conceptual scarves collection, which we will launch for SS2011 has already proved really popular with buyers that got a sneak preview, also I think the trainer version of some classic Red By Wolves designs, like the unisex, buckled Yvan boot, for example, will do really well.

Refinery29 has described the line as “big bows that look like it was made of discarded trash bags” and compared it to a “first-year fashion school project”. We’d have to completely disagree.

The look is very Wang meets swim, with a good dose of sheer and sheen. Definitely a downtown girls bikini.

Lately my brain has been having serious déjà-vu overtime.

It seems everywhere I turn, there’s something studded or super-spiky.

When I saw this collection by Assad Mounser, It was like being sent back to the ’70s, with my hair all frizzed up and wearing my leather pants, looking like a glam-rock chick. [Pictured Above: Moonage Daydream Collar $539.00]

I’m thrilled with the fact that bohemian vibes run rampant throughout the collection and that it features lots of components mixed with crystals, turquoise, lava rock, and glistening metals.

Also I love the way she uses found objects like tricked-out bullets and cross pendants. Definitely not the look for the girly-girl, cause this is rock’n roll all the way.
