I admit that I have been woefully neglectful of my Iqons account, not checking for invites often and not updating my showcase at all. Shame on me! But today I took care of business and duly accepted invites. It was then I checked out an invite from New York based designer Chi-Lai Cherry Yuen.
Upon visting her site I was really impressed by what I saw. Chi-Lai Cherry Yuen has exhibited her designs in Japan, Hong Kong and the Us and also received an honourable mention from the CFDA in its student scholarship award and La Cambre Award from Arts of Fashion International Competition 2008. Looking at her, pieces which are skillfully contoured and tailored, I can see why she has received the recognition she has.
Her volume play is innovative but not gimmiky and stays on the right of sophisticated.
She says of her work "it is art in relation to the space, and the functions between the garment and the body". I can see what she is saying as the garments are undeniably artistic and it might be said that her work could serve as 'fashion as art', although I find that short sentence to have become a bit of a cliche. I think in her instance though the fashion aspect is primary and merely alludes to art as opposed to claiming to be art in itself, in the way perhaps Hussein Chalayan peices can most definitely be catagorised as art, since because many of his pieces simply do not function as fashion in the sense of wearability.
At it's simplest, Chi-Lai Cherry Yuen's work is thought provoking and inspiring and makes me want some wire fed ruffles and now I really want a one shouldered leather something!
