Demna Gvasalia - Fashions From A Galaxy Far, Far Away

         May 19th, 2007

Star Wars/Modernist Chic is inspiring the themes of many lines coming out this Fall. Balenciaga and Victor & Rolf all sent collections that would be better suited for a galaxy far, far away than shopping for groceries. Whether or not these styles make it into your closet, there is one designer that is definitely worth his weight in midichlorians. Demma Gvasalia is changing the rules of menswear by combining complex deconstruction with artistic abstraction, creating a mens line that actually offers some originality. Each piece in the collection, from the jackets and trench, to the slouch boots and belted sweaters seem suited for rockin’ the cantina with R2D2 and C3PO.

“I want to push the limits of what is acceptable in men’s clothing” designer Demma Gvasalia timidly says when asked about his collection. Generous volumes, out of proportion details, unexpected drapes, he traces with an authentic and avant-garde style, an unedited version of the urban knight that is at the same time melancholic and proud, dreamy and combative. It’s only a matter of time before this designer from the EU makes it over to the streets of NYC.

Funny video which may offer some hints as to this designers inspiration
