New York’s Indie Fashion Scene Thrives

It may seem hard to break into business in one of the world’s fashion capitals’ but there is hope! A new organization in New York City is working to open the fashion design industry to newcomers and small-name brands and boutiques.

Fashion Indie–a group of marketers, event planners, and graphic and web artists–work for a fee to help new fashion designers in New York City get noticed. The group promotes New York fashion and accessory designers of all kinds, including specialties such as wedding dress couture, jewelry, and fashionable handbags and other accessories.

The New Yorkers behind Fashion Indie also maintain a blog, where they critique the fashion choices of celebrities and political heavyweights. Hillary Clinton was recently criticized for wearing a floral print blazer: “The possible first female President of the United States has a thing or two to learn about indie style, but that’s no reason to count her out of the race just yet.”

Groups like Fashion Indie provide services to designers in New York City, but the best step towards getting your Manolos in the door may be an education. For fashion designers and marketers, learning the business basics is just as important as having a natural talent for design or management.
