The Real Fashionista Diaries: Day One at the Tents and Gen Art Fresh Faces

Mooka Kinney Spring 08Â

From the moment I received my little plastic press pass- I was in. I was part of the overwhelming New York Fashion Week whirlwind.

Day One included a self-guided tour of the main tent and its surroundings. I checked out all the available goods - magazines, coffee, drinks, Havianas, and more. As I acquainted myself with the layout, I spotted a stunning Abaete-clad Sophia Bush sneaking out the backstage entrance into a waiting limo. After a break for some school work (universities have not yet integrated Fashion Week into vacation schedules) I was ready for the GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion show. I arrived late- really late- and missed the show, but caught the footage during the after party at Spotlight. The party was packed with pretty people and passed cocktails.

Rachael Antonoff & Alison Lewis of Mooka Kinney and a look from Dana Lee’s A-ZÂ

Good-looking guys in turquoise polos handed out Fiji water while updated versions of the 1920’s cigarette girl showcased the new Blackberry phones on trays. I met GenArt Fresh Faces Rachel Antonoff and Alison Lewis of Mooka Kinney and Dana Lee of A-Z. The young and talented Mooka Kinney team designs whimsical and fanciful pieces with more than a hint of vintage. Dana Lee’s sleek menswear line is wearable and weatherproof, using performance fabrics like parachute nylon.Â

The emerging designers certainly looked their parts. Rachel and Alison were vintagey and downtown, with funky flats and unique accessories; Rachel had a little feathered cap and Alison a great long necklace. Dana chose the all-black route; from her long straight hair to her leather pumps. She sported a splendid pair of (black) vintage frames, too.

The most exciting part of the night for me was meeting a certain friend of Rachel and Alison, Alia Shawkat, or Arrested Development’s “Maeby Funke.” Because I am a loyal Arrested fan, and because it was so unexpected, and because Alia was just super cool. Her curly hair was bobbed and her eyebrows highlighted with vivid red. She rocked a layered look, with a seventies-style halter under a black short-shorted romper. Fishnets, platforms, and a bright yellow bag rounded out the look. Alia, you made my night!
