Ask Daniel Saynt: Why Do Guys Wear Their Pants So Low?

Q: I see it all the time and it makes no sense, why do guys wear their pants so low that you can see their underwear?A: This is one of my biggest fashion peeves. I don’t get it. It makes no sense at all, looks horrible and is by far the most pressing issue in urban men’s fashion today. Here are a few reasons why I feel men do it…
1. They want you to know they can afford underwear. 2. They are on the DL (”on the down low” a.k.a “in the closet” for all those without a ghetto handbook handy) and want other men to know their asses are up for the taking. |
| 3. They’re self-destructive and want to make it as easy as possible for cops to catch them. Running ain’t easy when your pants are so low.4. They have diarrhea and need quick access between their ass and the toilet seat.
5. They didn’t get the memo that Tupac is dead and took his style with him. 6. They are really self conscience about their weight and want to make sure that everyone knows they don’t have “junk in da trunk.” 7. The only clothing stores that accept food stamps are Big & Tall stores. 8. They are jealous of women who get to feel a cool breeze up their skirts on warm summer days. Why should they get all the fun? Whoo!! That was a quick blast of wind. 9. They’re are tired of women asking if they wear boxers or briefs. 10. They really, honestly, and fool heartedly think its cool. No joke. They seriously believe that. I know it’s ridiculous. But yes, they really do think they look like the streets version of Cary Grant or something. |

That # 7 comment was really offensive. Why would you assume that because it is mainly an urban trend that they would need to pay for their clothes with food stamps….which is ridiculous by itself ie., FOOD stamps. You are really ignorant!

well me being “hispanic”! and lived in the ghetto as a kid! (not anymore)… i know that gang members and rappers and like you said “urban men” wear their shorts or pants like this because it’s part of the gang, rap, hiphop, style in the hispanic community! so you might think it’s cool and criticize them… but they dont care they think they are cool! and everyone in their community (ghetto) does too. So it’s their way of showing their style!… but i would never do that! if they want to do it! then let them be independent! what ever they think is “cool”! whatever i dont care!
There is a reason guys wear their pants like gangsters… and its completely gay.(no offense) All of the prison cliches may not be true, but… In prison if a man is someones “bitch” hes is made to “sag” his pants as a symbol of his taken status. This I assume is for easy access of the butch. When these “bitches” are freed they rarely wear their pants correctly. As a result the “saggin” look has trickled down into the main stream. So remember, the next time you think dudes with their “sagging” pants are gangsters, let em know where they get their “style.”
Why do you care so much about this. I don’t care it is cool.

I feel that the remarks were very offinsive it’s not just an urban thing I see alot of upscale caucasion males wearing their pants this way too. I am african american and I personally don’t like that the guys are dressed this way no matter what race you are. You guys look silly, how can anyone take you seriously.
I agree with the one who started this. I don’t wear a belt and sometimes my pants fall down a little , as in, 3 inches below the waist, but that picture above is just ridiculous. That’s TOO low. I’m a vegan (strict vegetarian) and don’t use leather but for christ’s sake, pull you pants up. Zack De La Rocha, lead singer of Rage Against the Machine, is a rapper, and he wears a belt at all but 2 shows I’ve seen, and when he doesnt he looks like me: a FEW inches below the waist, but never like in the picture above. Also, I’m caucasian/white. So, it’s not a racial thing. I went to school with a kid (class of 2004) who was black and he wpre his pants so high you could see his socks, and my frned Jerry is white, and he wears was black, he wore his pants so you can his ass completely.

There’s is only one reason that they wear their pants that way.
like Dick Said, in prison they wore their pants like that to let people know that they were availible, “is was ok to stick in their ass” as long as you didn’t kill them. I think it’s hiliarious because if they knew that was the meaning of the “SO CALLED TREND” or some kind of “Fashion statement” then I think this unprofessional crap would disapear and black people would try to better themselves instead of trying to be thugs and gansters. It is any wonder their so sterotyped??? Think about people. Don’t be steve erkel, but have alittle respect for yourself. Who wants to see you ass anyway?
