Jewelry inspiration can come from many places, but California based indie designer Alex + Chloe seem to derive it from some strange places. “It actually started with the idea of only taking silhouettes of people and translating them into shadows for necklaces,” says the designer, who prefers to anonymously go by his labels name. Shadows quickly translated to sticks, raptor claws, skulls and antlers in this collection that is both perfect for partying the nights away in a Bushwick loft or just making your work mates keel over in jealousy over your completely original neck couture.

Remember that “very special” episode of Saved by the Bell? You know, the one where Jessie Spano freaks out about getting a good grade on her midterms, starts popping caffeine pills and Zack has to help her get off the junk. It’s one of my favorites. Well, last week the episode was on ABC Family [yes I watch ABC Family] and Ms. Spano’s style was clearly an A+. The Bayside High over-achiever inspired these picks which are smart girl chic and 90’s everyday cool.
With accessories by indie designer Rachel Leigh, Karen Zambos and Marc Jacobs, shoes by Loeffler Randal, and high-waist braided jeans by Grey Ant, our Jessie Spano looks are perfect for cramming for finals or heading to “The Max” with your very own A.C. Slater.

I wonder if Winehouse really is Amy’s last name? I don’t know if it’s ironic or just bad luck that the sultry singing seductress with a penchant for hard liquor is named after the juice that makes her a regular at Betty Ford.
Regardless of her last name, Amy Winehouse has made the jump across the pond to enlighten us Yanks about what Brit girls are really like. With a style that is all her own, imitating Amy’s laid back look is a cinch. From Yochi Hoop Earrings to the Kova & T boot cut jeans these indie picks is sure to put you in the running for “Bar Fly of the Year” or at least keep you stylin at your next AA meeting.

1. Silver Plated Magnum Flask
2. Yochi Design Hoop Earrings
3. Louella Belt in Black

The warmth of Spring brings out our inner animal. Release the beast by suiting up in some of these exciting animal prints by indie favorites such as Maria Bonita Extra, Ya Ya and Tyler Rose. Leopard, zebra, and snake prints are making a huge comeback this Spring with patterns being seen on everything from dresses to bathing suits, handbags to stilettos. Pick up on of these animal print picks and be queen of your urban jungle.

1. Ya-Ya Swahili Beach Tanzania Dress
2. Julie Haus Lampshade Leopard Dress
3. Tyler Rose Swimwear The Whiskey Bikini
4. Felix Rey Handbags Jungle Mesh Clutch
5. SURevolution Batik Tagua Print Ring
6. Maria Bonita Extra Leopard Flat
Style Indie Tip: Head to toe prints are not hot so if you plan to wear a zebra print dress stay away from zebra shoes and accessories. It’s best to pair animal prints with solid colors to not seem like you just came back from a hunting trip in the Sahara. For Zebra pair with red flats and accessories. Leopard works best with solid black or brown accessories. If you plan to accent with animal print bags, shoes or jewelry, it’s okay to match prints in accessories as long as you are wearing a dress that is a solid base color. Example; Little black dress with leopard print shoes and hand bag.

Red and blue states may be divided on electing Hillary Clinton for President, but one thing they must agree on is her lack of credible style. The possible first female President of the United States has a thing or two to learn about indie style, but that’s no reason to count her out of the race just yet. With a few modifications, this former first lady might just fit in on the campaign ready streets of NYC. Here are some suggestions for emulating Bubba’s keeper.
Our first tip would be to keep it floral. Hillary’s floral print blazer above can be replaced by a floral dress, such as the one below by emerging fashion designer Rachel Pally. With a vintage cut, this scoop neck, pleated empire waist number might remind Hill of her days of protesting on the greens of Harvard.

Rachel Pally Floral Print Scoop Neck Bubble Dress
How much are we loving vintage inspiration right now? Check out this Jersey dress with thin stripes throughout. 1/2″ Banding at scoop neck and pleating at empire waist. Unfinished edges at fitted bottom hem and cap sleeves. 40″ Long. 92% modal, 8% spandex. Dry clean. Made in the U.S.A.
Second, these Carmen Ho pumps are perfect for walking the campaign trail. Adding much needed stature to Bill’s old lady, these babies are great for running to meetings at the White House or kicking questionable interns to the curb.

Carmen Ho Patent Hera Pump with Vamp Detail
The perfect heel height for a sexy shoe.Patent-leather, peep-toe pump with cutout detail at vamp. 3″ stacked, stiletto heel. Leather sole. Made in Italy. This item cannot be gift-boxed. Sizing conversion: 36=US 6, 36.5=6/6.5, 37=6.5, 37.5=7, 38=7.5, 38.5=8, 39=8.5, 39.5=8.5/9, 40=9
Finally, Hillary can finish up the look by adding this Erickson Beamon piece, which will add a little heart and a little luck to her get-up. The hearts are to address her detractors who feel she sometimes comes off as a bit of an ice queen. The clovers to give her the extra luck she’s gonna need to take down Obama at the primary’s.

Erickson Beamon for Shopbop Clover & Heart Charm Bracelet
Erickson Beamon has us falling in love with oversized jewelry all over again.Bracelet with wooden and metal link detail. Heart and clover charms throughout. Lobster claw clasp. 8.5″ long.Made in N.Y.C.

The Shop: MSG
Why Go?
Usually, when I hear the letters M-S-G whilst in Chinatown, I run screaming in the opposite direction. This kind, however, is anything but bad for you.
Despite it’s somewhat desolate surrounding, new indie shop MSG has brought a bright, beacon of emerging fashion light to the area. This brand new neighborhood gem [it's only been open for two weeks!] offers indie design that you’ll be lucky to find anywhere else.
Original designs by Mami Suzuki, as well as threads from Japan and Brazil encompass MSG’s collection. Don’t sleep on this awesome addition to the area known for it’s MSG-free Dim Sum.

Now that I’ve resurrected bits of my highschool training in Espanol, I can rave about my new indie find. Whilst perusing the racks of a few Lower East Side boutiques, I came across a fabulous dress [at a great price!] made by an awesome designer!
If you’ve never heard of Brazilian clothing line Maria Bonita Extra, then get familiar. This collection includes my absolute favorites…cute accessories, simple yet stylish ballet flats, and flirticious [I'm sure this isn't a word] edgy dresses! The fashion gods have obviously heard my plea for clothes that perfectly meld simple-sexiness with comfort. If only I chose Portuguese over Spanish as my second language of choice, I’d translate and share more about this indie wonder. Alas…

Thankfully, these gems have made their way to the US of A and can be found on shopbop.com. If you’re more of a pound-the-pavement shopper, get your MBE fix at Soho indie hot spot, Caravan, as well as my favorite guilty pleasure [where I purchased the lovely, and hard-to-find strapless blue and black splatter-printed wonder pictured above] located in the heart of the LES, Dolce Vita.
Check out some of our Maria Bonita Extra picks from online shop - ShopBop.com.

The art and fashion fields are two separate entities which often find themselves intertwined. This statement is true when looking at Masani Designs collection of Afro-Caribbean inspired, wearable sculptures. Each piece combines the aesthetic of the islands with the sleek, geometrical forms found in modern art sculptures. Unique in design, all necklaces, earrings, and cuff links in the collection are handcrafted out of sterling silver, gold, coral and other natural materials. Reflecting the underlying complexity of minimalistic concepts and design, Masani is sure to keep your friends musing about how smarty arty you are, and wondering what Musuem gift shop you picked up your necklace from.

Charmed and Dangerous is a jewelry design label that befriended Fashion Indie’s profile. Here’s a MySpace quickie. Here is how the designer describes this line of trinket inspired jewelry:
“Charmed & Dangerous has a piece of jewelry to express your mood whatever it is. Naughty or nice, sweet or sassy, or even all of the above at the same time.”
So basically, it’s jewelry that covers a bunch of moods, which is good ’cause I’m borderline schizophrenic with an addiction to cute jewelry.

The search has yet to steer us wrong. Using our patent pending, kick buttocks indie search we were able to discover accessories designer Kiku.
Her crow necklace is not something to , um, crow about. It is a Fused Glass pendants that was made by melting cut and stacked pieces of Bullseye glass together in a kiln. Cool.
