Mooka Kinney for Mooka Kinney

21 Nov 2007

I must have missed the memo, but it seems there has been a growing underground trend amongst underground designers, skip the model and wear the clothes. I’m not sure it the reason is cause of budgeting (I personally have never met a indie model who wasn’t willing to work for picts) or cause of self love, but I personally love it. My favorite example is in the case of the Mooka Kinney girls Rachel Antonoff and Alison Lewis, the recent Gen Art Fresh Faces, who pose in each of their picts for the past two seasons.

Another one to watch is Mandate of Heaven, the artist as designer meets vintage collection which enjoys a little self love. Guess the whole “Be your collection, wear your collection.” gossip I preached at Parsons actually made sense.

Rock Star Legend Gets Crafty with DIY Jacket

18 Nov 2007

lbwomanHanging around Patricia Field’s extravaganza last week, I kept running up to every well dressed somebody inquiring who (or what?!?) they were wearing. At her gatherings there tends to be a bevy of do-it-yourself types who enjoy wearing their “art” on their sleaves. This sense of style and dedication to dressing will always lay close to my heart, since I am a very tactile individual when it comes to design. Sure the ultimate goal is to make high quality clothing like that of Azzedine Alia at some point, but downtown’s charm has always relied on crafty creativity.
Its a personal signature to say the least.

By the end of the party my eyes became fixated on a unique jacket with a stunning print of a softcore 70’s female on the back. The front of the jacket was all punked out in faux leopard. The designer behind the piece was none other than legendary rock photographer Leee Black Childers, who originally sewed it up himself from a wall hanging. He claims he can’t dress for shit so once in a while he’ll just create completely bizarre things that are always destined to become conversation pieces. He paired his outfit with Trash and Vaudville leopard shoes. Truly a savant who enjoys pushing the limits of style … Rock & Roll never dies and Punk will always live on!!!

Vintage Indie: Between a Frock and a Hard Place

15 Oct 2007

When thinking vintage, crusty old grannies (bet you love the way I describe the soonly departed) with closets filled with goodies come to mind. Apparently the dotcoming divas at Frock, 148 Orchard Street, NYC have a different idea. Their new website, FrockNYC.com, is a vintage shoppers dream with full, detailed descriptions, sizing and 360 views of dresses by Arnold Scaasi, Romeo Gigli, and Pierre Cardin. Their selection is amazing with pieces that would be coveted by any downtown darling or Billyburg b*tch. Check em out cause their one of a kind dresses don’t last very long.

Digital Thrift: Archive Vintage

26 Sep 2007

Finding diamond-in-the-rough vintage online is iffy at best. Most online vintage boutiques are hit and miss, and I just don’t have the necessary patience for Ebay. Which is why I’m thrilled to have stumbled across ArchiveVintage.com.

Even though I often times enjoy the thrill of finding an amazing piece after browsing never-ending racks of clothing for hours, there’s something uber convenient about browsing through nothing but coveted pieces that any reputable fashionista would love.

Find pieces like the Rudi Gernreich 60’s silk mini-dress or the Givenchy gold choker pictured above. From Escada heart earrings to Norma Kamali wedge heels, this website is a vintage candy land. Wallets beware.

Get Back-to-School in Style

14 Sep 2007

I remember outfitting myself in what I thought was one-of-a-kind style for the first day of school (when I was in school…ah adolescence…) only to return home angry after seeing another girl wearing the exact same thing. Situations like that can cripple a teenager. Don’t let this happen to you. Whether you’re heading back to the halls of high school, the college quad, or the dimly-lit night-class lab, you have the option of not wearing the back-to-school unintentional uniform.

Head to Brooklyn’s Artists & Fleas Indoor Market and be greeted with threads from up-and-coming designers, must-have jewelry, and one-of-a-kind vintage. I can tell you from experience that I practically bury myself in their vintage collection whenever I make a visit…it’s just that great.

So hop on the infamous L train, be careful of tripping over any stray hipsters, and find your way to this Brooklyn gem. Steer clear of the embarrassment.
