We Are The Market had the chance to check out Yoko Devereaux’s fashion show. The lucky PR firm had the chance to check out his fall/winter 08 debut on Monday. “It was the first show for Yoko Devereaux in several seasons and the venue was packed with the usual gang of scenesters, editors, buyers and celebrity friends like Alan Cumming, Sophia Lamar and Ana Matronic.
The collection, designed under the guidance of creative director Andy Salzer, featured graphics by artist Charles Lutz, as well as cardigans, skinny ties, super skinny pants and chic hoodies in a palette of basic black, white, slate blue and gray for the guy who wants to toe the line between cutting edge and just plain cool.
We’ve got pics after the jump.”

There are many pre-parties for Fashion Week, and last night we had the honor of attending one of them. Personally invited by the honoree, Matt Levine of Steelo, the party was buzzing with industry folk, local celebs, models, and a slew of very well dressed fashionites and trendsetters. The brand encompasses en entire lifestyle which was evident throughout the crowded lounge, most of whom were wearing pieces from Steelo’s (which means ’style’) latest collection. Matt, wearing, of course, one his own creations greeted all guests and happily posed for press photos.

He started the collection back in 2004 with the idea of fusing together nightlife, entertainment, and fashion. ”My first collection was comprised of just t-shirts and customized blazers. I wanted to start off slow where the mistake and setbacks would be minimal. The first piece I created was a shirt entitled ‘I Love Paparazzi’ which was featured on the NBC Today Show—worn by Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. It was actually a men’s sweater, but women loved the oversized look of it. I was sold out of it immediately.â€
With this kind of celebrity endorsing your threads, Steelo was sure to be a huge hit throughout the industry.
“In creating Steelo I wanted to create a sophisticated collection with style, fresh with elegance, the Lower East Side fused with Wall Street, the confidence of New York, the influence of Los Angeles, and the creativity of Japan.â€
A true visionary, Matt believes that “if you sell to the right store, the right people will buy it.” Whatever his strategy, the boy is doing something right and we definitely respect his passion for the industry. His collection is available locally and online at Caravan.

Byblos, an Italian fashion line around since 1973, has never looked better. The super edgy, almost space age line, is surprisingly wearable and totally awesome. The Spring/Summer ‘08 Womens Collection is a mix of bubble sleeved dresses, sky-high hemline mini skirts, crop jackets and fitted pants. The sophisticated, muted colors and slit detailing, not to mention wrap around platforms, make for a fresh and sexy new approach. Everything is made to enhance the shape and curves of the body and bare just enough skin to deal with what is supposed to be the hottest summer in decades.

However my personal favorite details from the collection include the rope belts, knotted into bows, which adorned the shorts, pants and skirts.

Looking for something a little more fun? Blu Byblos, is a much younger, sportier collection with bright colors, stripes and denim pieces, still maintains the basic identity of Byblos. Both Byblos and Blu Byblos have equally hot men’s collections, as well as shoe and accessory lines.

So Fashionista.com just ran this article about Fashion Week and Project Runway designers who will be showing during fashion week. I know our boy Malan Breton will be showing but he’s not mentioned or is he? Don’t know if there is beef between the two but will be sure to investigate. This is truly the strangeness. Will investigate it but why the hateration towards Malan?
“Christian, Jillian, and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named aren’t the only Project Runway designers showing during the week:
Season One alumna Alexandra Vidal has shipped herself from Miami for the occasion, and she’ll show her Fall ‘08 collection at the Bryant Park Hotel on Tuesday, February 5.
Ms. Vidal stacks her appointments against the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, Tory Burch, Matthew Williamson (who’s back from London), and Narciso Rodriguez, and according to her website, she goes like this:
“Discriminating women with impeccable taste, her clients include many whose names regularly appear in the society pages and in fashion magazines. They have sought her out for her individualized creations whose colors, fabrics and details make them stand out.”

What Market Said: The ’90s revivial is on and popping! At the Number (N)ine show in Paris yesterday, designer Takahiro Miyashita paid homage to Kurt Cobain with a collection that was full-on grunge. Called My Own Private Portland, Miyashita gave us layers of mismatched flannels, thrift store sweaters, Elmer Fudd hats, plaid shirts, shabby knits, busted shoes, and even moccasins that took us waaay back. We’ve got pics after the jump.]
Â
What Saynt Says: While it was inevitable that the 90’s would eventually come back to haunt us, I feel the most noteworthy aspect of this collection are the high-water pants that each of the models wore. It seems that the Thomster has had a bit of a rippling effect on the industry, and the look is translating into more everyday looks which is refreshing cause know one wants to see the ankles of pasty business types, no one.

What Market Said: Alexander McQueen is such a forward thinker that sometimes the viability of his collection is not immediately apparent. His stuff often seems a little too “out there” to be saleable or understandable to the average customer. McQueen recently went to India and was so inspired, he designed a whole collection around what he saw there. His fall/winter collection for 2008 is all about prints from the sub continent- a clash of pattern and color. What Saynt Says: Is it weird that I am strangely drawn to this collection? While most of it seems like an unwearable jumble of paisleys and prints, pieces from this season of McQueen are very, um, desirable. The Indian inspirations are very apparent, which is refreshing and a directly different approach than what we saw last year. The colors work extremely well and the hues and mixes are perfect for the fall. Love what Queeny’s doing.
We know the collection is a little bizarre, but you know in 5 years we will all be wearing some variation of this.

In tune with my latest article on recycling, I found a designer right up the “GREEN” ally.

Gary Harvey has made a fashion revolution with his “recycled” dresses. “By sourcing fabrics and raw material that have literally been thrown away, you can look good and be good too. Too many garments are deemed aesthetically redundant and are discarded at the end of the season, when there are still many years of wear left.” Gary has made a career for himself out of his frustration toward the mainstream. Working as Creative Director of Levi Strauss and Dockers Europe for nearly ten years, Gary saw first hand how much was being thrown away and decided to create something out of his dismay; to change people’s perception of second-hand clothing and create a fashion and social conscience.

His first dress evolved using 42 pairs of Levi’s 502’s. His other works include a stunning design using 18 Burberry macs, a corset dress using 28 camouflage Army jackets, and a body-contouring gown using discarded baseball jackets. His latest collection is made of 30 recycled copies of the Financial Times. His silhouettes are inspired by vintage ball gowns (totally perfect with the “recycled” theme) and his first collection showcased his stunning dresses during London Fashion Week. Now this is a designer that’s doing something for change….

If your name was Adam Lippes, and you studied psychology at Cornell, and worked at Oscar de la Renta, and then started your own label, what would you name your collection? With his first choice of Adam+Eve seeming to be too synonymous with clothing of a more sinister nature (Adam + Eve also happens to be the name of a chain of sex shops, go figure), it seems that Adam Lippes has engaged in a trail separation and is now simply “ADAM”.
This fabulous designer may have lost the Apple eater but he hasn’t lost his sense of styles. ADAM continues to have his basics down to a tee, literally. Launched as a casual luxury t-shirt and basics line (one of Adam’s first pieces was a pair of mens underwear) Lippes began his career at Polo and became the Creative Director for Oscar de la Renta in his early twenties. In 2004 he launched Adam+Eve and made his escape from the corporate hustle. The collection found friends amongst those looking for a little luxe in their everyday wear.

With the new shipment of Resort on the way most fall pieces are on sale now, this means you can get some real Adam+Eve luxury at an affordable price. The sweaters and dresses are designed for those seeking a modern look without being enslaved by trends. His Resort 08 Collection is oh so basic yet very fashionable with pieces like cotton skirts and silky dresses carrying the collection. For men, Havana Days was the theme with striped polos and long sleeve V’s taking the runway. For women, ADAM ventured to Miami with bright beach ready dresses and tops and a Jetset Glam collection that is ready for any Hollywood starlet with a warm weather destination. Well constructed with great fabrics and tailored pieces ADAM begs you to trade in the fig leaf for something a bit more luxurious.

Jeremy Scott is so flipping ridiculously talented. A collection inspired by Happy Days? I mean seriously who thinks of these things? Working in vinyl record inspired skirts, guitar swimsuits, and jukebox dresses, this collection challenged inspiration, incorporating the literal with design, and giving the Viktor & Rolf boys a run for their fashion translationals (made up word, yes, but fitting).
I am madly, truly, deeply a fan and hope that everyone out there finds a way to work Jeremy into your wardrobe. If you can’t do the full looks, opt for the tees which seem to play nicely in most fashionistas closets.
With fans like Madonna, Nelly Furtado and Fergie, Scotty boy has secured his spot as the New Wave Prince of Fashion, get these pieces now before they become priced up vintage pieces, this designer is only getting better with age, which means high resale value for earlier pieces.

Harlequin Romance usually brings to mind damsels in distress on the cover of a paperback with Fabio (who’s in desperate need of a reality show about now) pulling their hair back and showcasing his ripped physique. But to the Viktor & Rolf boys the damsel took on a life of her own, jumping onto the runway in a conceptual show that was both surreal and well welcomed.

As Karen Carpenter’s “Close To You” played models exited the screaming mouth of a woman (interesting) and the runway was filled with a flurry of violin inspirations, both literal and through quiet details, harlequin styled collars reminiscent of the Italian clowns and contrasting diamond patterns, which were present throughout.
Strong plays on shoes and booties make me look forward to the duo soon to be released handbags, which play away from the runway collection but not the Viktor & Rolf name, which reminds me, these two are amazing branders. Want proof? On their website the computerized voice of a woman repeats their brand name repeatedly as if their trying to brainwash you into knowing their name. They’re line is not accessible to the everyday woman, yet their brand is well known and followed by the masses. I don’t feel that this fact is only due to their partnership with H&M, there is definitely something about these designers that speaks to women.

This collection further proves that Viktor & Rolf aren’t one trick ponies. Since the much discussed folly/genius of their last show (remember the lighting rigs) the fashion world has been a buzz about what to expect this season. Fortunately what we received was a spectacular show with very wearable pieces which were as conceptual as they were realistic (please tell me that makes some sense). Proof that no one will be playing the violin of sorrow for these two anytime soon.

The party you couldn’t get into, now on film. Also, for those who haven’t been watching The New Pop for all the Love Brigade fun, why haven’t you? This is like reality TV done right! No tribal councils, no immunity challenges, and no celebrity contestants, just real life drama from the fashion world. Tyra would be proud.

Here’s a LDN Fashion Week review for you, courtesy of Mode et Utopie!
This was a formidable collection because Fiona Sinha and Aleksandar Stanic delivered clothes that managed to look bright, young and carefree, but also thoughtful at the same time. The feel was decidedly street, but definitely sophisticated - more so than say, Luella. The shoes are fantastic, and served to firmly ground the lightness of the clothes, and the one-shoulder designs here had a lot more attitude than similar looks shown on other runways.

Colorful, deliciously poppy and completely in a league of its own, Louise Goldin’s spring/summer 2008 collection defied trend forecasters to bring a hodgepodge of bright jewel toned dresses and layered pieces down the runway. I am literally infatuated with this designers work, who I am hopping will be available in New York in the very near future (yes black is our color, but wouldn’t this be so much more fun). Feeling a little like VPL on a technicolor trip through Oz, this very talented designer changed my feelings towards the mixture of colors and unusual forms, two elements which usually result in unsettling feelings in my fashionable belly. With its geometric cuts, hello shoulders style, and sensual color blocking, this fresh Spring collection will undoubtedly win some major fans amongst the rebellious starlets and scenesters looking to breakaway from the contrived trends of the past few years.

I don’t care what all you haters think, I love this piece from designer MC Hammer Roksanda Illincic!!!! Love, love, love it! Sure this would make any woman look like she belongs on the 50 yard line of the Jets yelling HIKE!, but isn’t it time we stopped expecting women to look like women, or even human, and challenged them to look more like their trying to smuggle boxes of bricks in their shoulders! I mean, yeah the silver bra top hasn’t been fashionable since… wait… let me think… HOLD ON I’M THINKING!!! (Google search “Silver Bra Tops Worn As Clothes Instead of Underwear”. Damn, nothing.). Okay, so they’ve never been popular, but that makes this even more special, cause it’s original, and isn’t that what fashions all about, completely original pieces which no one in their right mind would wear! Oh wait, that’s not what fashions about? Okay then, someone better send Roksanda a memo cause she must not know.

Yes, yes I know. New York fashion week was ages ago, but as much as I would like to think I am capable of writing reviews, while battling the flu, while maintaining a full time job, while running the web’s number one source for independent fashion news (thanks indies!), while learning the banjo (watched Deliverance on TBS. got inspired), I’m not so here is one more New York fashion review for you.

Down under designer, Jayson Brundson offered a refreshing collection which combined elements of futurism, contrasting color blocks and bold bamboo prints in the finest silks and Australian Merino Wool. Sultry silhouettes showed a true understanding of the female form and the proper way to accent it, which positions this designer above many designers who chose to “manify” women with tailored looks which we’re more ‘menswear now in size two”, than flattering Springwear. (sorry boy-girls I’m not a fan of the “Dude looks like a lady” trend that’s showing up in the Spring.) Accented by accessories from Aussie jewelry maker, Dinosaur Designs, Jayson Brundson’s pieces transcended the trend forecast to offer a fresh look for spring which won’t be easy to duplicate.

Saturday night I was given the honor of viewing Mandate of Heaven’s spring collection. The event took place in a cozy hidden little home with a private garden on the always surprising St. Marks Street. Loyalists of the brand came through, rocking out the designer’s clothing. Indie rock princess Paige Wood played guitar and sang throughout the show, giving the event an communal feel.

This show was more “intimate gathering” than “sterile runway”. Completely unconventional, I fell in love with the fashions instantaneously. 60s inspirations flowed in each piece of this collection which was well grouped and perfectly modeled. Designer Carissa Ackerman’s signature high waistline sun suits and short hemmed shorts are always a total treat. Make it your Mandate to discover this collection today (sorry folks, that was my corn not Kristen’s. d.s).
This is brought to you by your favorite fashionista…

Drawing inspiration from photographs of “ancestors on holiday in French colonial Indochina”, Malan Breton’s spring 2008 collection combined South East Asian references with luxurious fabrics. Favorites in this well edited group, included the “conch silk floating double layer short dress” and the “onyx silk stretch crepe de chine tank top with silk satin-faced gazar full length” (both pictured above). Malan Breton extended his line into wedding gowns with a simple cream silk taffeta wedding dress.  The result was an elegance which should only be attempted by the most experienced fashionista.
Other collection highlights included a well rounded use of tans and eco-friendly fabrics. Te Casan shoes were perfectly paired with floral prints and full length dresses and skirts.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. New York Couture is the new Heatherette. Having an almost cult like following of devotees, Cassie, the eclectic, 24 year old behind the collection, has been having a ball creating one-of-a-kind dresses for the punk/glam set. With a mix of out-there embellishments in lace, tie-dye, and devil-may-care vintage restorations, this collection is fearless.

The final day of Fashion Week found hundreds of style patrons catching the last bit of Spring 2008 at the premiere Caravan Runway Show. Caravan started as a mobile clothing store that would visit busy customers at their convenience. So the “Jetsetters and their Inner Bohemian†theme targeted the core Caravan customer: the well-read, well-traveled, constantly-on-the-go individual.
With looks from over 24 international designers, each with his or her own unique flavor, the show held everyone’s attention. For a bit of rock ‘n roll, a little black dress with a short, sheer, hoop skirt by Vivienne Westwood opened the show. Then came a suite of designs from Sweden, France, Thailand, Spain, Denmark, and the US. J. Lindeberg and H. Fredriksson, both modern Swedish designers, had completely different approaches. The former went with a more casual look: sleek sportswear, including some great gray cardigans. The latter incorporated a bit more artistry into his pieces, like the metallic brocade bolero paired with shimmery high-waisted shorts. WALTER, an American brand, also featured metallics, in the form of a silvery, pinstriped, sleeveless blouse with a bold bow at the neck. A tiered ice blue satin dress with a gold jacket was classic Walter Baker. Kimberley Foley, another American, showed a collection full of unique detailing. A sculptural light blue-gray party dress featured drop tiers of discs, making the look modern and 3-D. A super-slim dress with cool capelet sleeves, looked almost as if it was two pieces.
As soon as U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday†came on, it was political, and looks from Social Atelier, a brand with a conscience, came down the runway. It was space-age hippie, as models wore metallic leggings and headbands with deconstructed T’s sporting messages like “Stop Genocide.â€

Small-time designer with high-end taste, Irina Shabayeva had a little fashion gala at small French restaurant, Jour Et Nuit, on Tuesday, Sept 11th. I’m a huge fan of the whole installation theme that young designers are fancying these days. Beautiful women adorned in high priced dresses lounging around inspired by the spirit of fashion. Tres chic.
Her spring line was filled with flowy cocktail dresses in silk chiffon that could also be worn on any glamorous resort area. Taking inspiration from the 1920’s flapper girl and mixing it with the Art Deco movement, the collection included a mix of jewel toned cocktail dresses accented with lace and fur. Regal plaids, a common thread in her collections, was mixed with soft silk and knee high boots. Definitively a designer to watch. Be sure to buy at least one piece for spring 2008 for a sexy chic appearance.

F*ck Bush, MTV, and the Bryant Park Tents. Kanye West at Style 360.
Kanye West, Carmen Electra, Pete Wentz. Front row at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week right? Wrong!!! The hottest celebrities skipped the hoopla of the Bryant Park tents to attend the shows from newcomer Style 360, an off-site fashion destination held at the very hip Metropolitan Pavilion. Featuring shows from indie favorites like Ghita (headed by Kanye’s fiance Alexis Phifer) and Malan Breton, as well as spectacles from the underwear geniuses at 2(x)ist and a special runway show from my favorite retail destination Caravan (seriously, I shouldn’t be allowed in this store. I am throughly addicted and spend way to much money there. Well actually I don’t cause they have really great sales. Go today. 2 Great Jones) the Style 360 shows trumped the tents to win the hearts of fashionistas looking for a break from the circus.

Malan Breton and Pete Wentz at Style 360
Elle, Mercury, Sunsilk, Fiji Water, Nikon and other sponsors proved that there is more money to make off site than on, which is good news for independent designers stifled by the exhuberent fees demanded by the Fern Malis led IMG. Stay here for full reviews on all the off site indie shows you need to know about. Got to go now, Malan’s shows about to start and Diana Eng is probably looking for me.

Side Note: Carmen Electra in lingerie and heels seductively spinning around in a giant hoop. Style 360 is a lot like Santa Claus, they know exactly what I wanted for Christmas. Also, does anyone know where I can find a giant hoop?

New York, September 7th – About 2000 people flocked the doors of Boucarou Lounge on Friday, September 7th as FashionIndie.com launched their first print magazine. “The scene was crazy. There was a line leading around the block.†says Fashion Indie president, Daniel Saynt. “All night long we tried our best to admit as many as possible. But anyone who arrived after 10PM wasn’t getting in.†With the lounge at capacity within five minutes of opening the door, hundreds of individuals waited up to three hours to attend the event, which featured the fashion stylings of Williamsburg designers Love Brigade.
The police arrived at 10:30 to assist with the dissipation of the crowd. “We were telling people that we hit capacity and most would just stick around hoping to get in,†continues Saynt. As a result, some key members of the press were turned away at the door, including editors of People Magazine, In Touch, and buyers from Bloomingdales. “We apologize to all who weren’t able to make it in. We didn’t realize how popular the Fashion Indie brand has become. Our last event took place on Halloween and attendance was no where near the amount that we saw on Friday.†The overwhelming response was partially caused through a partnership with Going.com, which featured the event as an Editor’s Choice resulting in nearly 2,400 online users displaying interest in the event. “In total we were able to admit 600 Going.com members throughout the night, most of which had also RSVP’d directly with us. We had no idea the site would draw such a crowd.†Those who were able to make it in included Victoria Secret Model Ajuma Daily, Fashion Designer Malan Breton, and Project Runway’s Diana Eng.
As a consolation for those not in attendance and for guests mistakenly turned away at the door, Fashion Indie will host a small after-work reception at Barna. The event will feature a showcase of Love Brigade’s Spring Collection, music by DJ Tinypants, goody bags and giveaways from sponsors H&M, Glam Media, and Pevonia Botanica as well as a $20 Open Bar. The capacity for the new venue is 250 so guests are being encouraged to arrive early.

As a big fan of Lim’s collections, (I stalk his SoHo haunt at least once a week), I was looking forward to seeing Phillip Lim’s interpretations for Spring 2008. For women, flowing loose fitting dresses and slouchy pants made their way onto the runway, with tuxedo jackets and pale blue cardigans offering the perfect cover-up for sudden Spring chills. One stand out piece was a tangerine pleated dress with dual shoulder straps. I was also a big fan of Lim’s accessories line which included lemon-hued oversized handbags for women and white, leather strapped cargo bags for men.

The men’s collection offered more choice Lim pieces, with navy and white being the pinnacle color scheme making the collection seem nautical. Quarter-length peacoats were an interesting choice on the runway. Overall, Lim continued to shine with a collection that is perfectly poised for spingtime in New York.

Last night I hit the MAO MAG mermaid disco party that looked like Studio 54 meets Party Monster! Here’s a picture of me amongst the mermaids Bunny and Bambie.
I was Chatting With the leaders behind MAO,Roger and Mauricio Padilha about the tasteless media today. I raised the question to them “Do you believe bad press is better than no press”? The brother’s responded in unison, “ABSOLUTELY NOT”! We at MAO don’t believe in that idea at all. Then proceeded with a fine theory to back up the theory with a statement on everyone’s favorite blonde train wreck heir head (I refuse to use her name ever). Rodger Padilha stated, “Should heir head ever actually achieve anything outanding and great, or for that matter any of those jailbird it chicks, well no one will ever take them seriously”. I said thank God for Class. It’s so lacking in our world today.
