Designer Discovery: Gary Harvey

28 Nov 2007

In tune with my latest article on recycling, I found a designer right up the “GREEN” ally.

Gary Harvey has made a fashion revolution with his “recycled” dresses. “By sourcing fabrics and raw material that have literally been thrown away, you can look good and be good too. Too many garments are deemed aesthetically redundant and are discarded at the end of the season, when there are still many years of wear left.” Gary has made a career for himself out of his frustration toward the mainstream. Working as Creative Director of Levi Strauss and Dockers Europe for nearly ten years, Gary saw first hand how much was being thrown away and decided to create something out of his dismay; to change people’s perception of second-hand clothing and create a fashion and social conscience.

His first dress evolved using 42 pairs of Levi’s 502’s. His other works include a stunning design using 18 Burberry macs, a corset dress using 28 camouflage Army jackets, and a body-contouring gown using discarded baseball jackets. His latest collection is made of 30 recycled copies of the Financial Times. His silhouettes are inspired by vintage ball gowns (totally perfect with the “recycled” theme) and his first collection showcased his stunning dresses during London Fashion Week. Now this is a designer that’s doing something for change….

London Fashion Week: Sinha-Stanic Spring 2008

23 Sep 2007

Here’s a LDN Fashion Week review for you, courtesy of Mode et Utopie!

This was a formidable collection because Fiona Sinha and Aleksandar Stanic delivered clothes that managed to look bright, young and carefree, but also thoughtful at the same time. The feel was decidedly street, but definitely sophisticated - more so than say, Luella. The shoes are fantastic, and served to firmly ground the lightness of the clothes, and the one-shoulder designs here had a lot more attitude than similar looks shown on other runways.

Check out more looks from Sinha-Stanic here!

London Fashion Week Spring 2008: Louise Goldin

Colorful, deliciously poppy and completely in a league of its own, Louise Goldin’s spring/summer 2008 collection defied trend forecasters to bring a hodgepodge of bright jewel toned dresses and layered pieces down the runway. I am literally infatuated with this designers work, who I am hopping will be available in New York in the very near future (yes black is our color, but wouldn’t this be so much more fun). Feeling a little like VPL on a technicolor trip through Oz, this very talented designer changed my feelings towards the mixture of colors and unusual forms, two elements which usually result in unsettling feelings in my fashionable belly. With its geometric cuts, hello shoulders style, and sensual color blocking, this fresh Spring collection will undoubtedly win some major fans amongst the rebellious starlets and scenesters looking to breakaway from the contrived trends of the past few years.

London Fashion Week Spring 2008: Roksanda Ilincic

22 Sep 2007

I don’t care what all you haters think, I love this piece from designer MC Hammer Roksanda Illincic!!!! Love, love, love it! Sure this would make any woman look like she belongs on the 50 yard line of the Jets yelling HIKE!, but isn’t it time we stopped expecting women to look like women, or even human, and challenged them to look more like their trying to smuggle boxes of bricks in their shoulders! I mean, yeah the silver bra top hasn’t been fashionable since… wait… let me think… HOLD ON I’M THINKING!!! (Google search “Silver Bra Tops Worn As Clothes Instead of Underwear”. Damn, nothing.). Okay, so they’ve never been popular, but that makes this even more special, cause it’s original, and isn’t that what fashions all about, completely original pieces which no one in their right mind would wear! Oh wait, that’s not what fashions about? Okay then, someone better send Roksanda a memo cause she must not know.
