1. Know the teams. Eli Manning and the New York Giants are squaring off against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. New York and Boston are the two worst sports towns in America because both believe they have the best teams when in fact they just have the douchiest fans. Same thing, at the end of the day. But considering the last time the Giants and the Patriots faced off the former proved victorious, expect a lot of unnecessary vitriol.

It’s hard to write about London, girls and empowerment without wanting to break out the Union Jack teatowel dress. But it’s not the 90s, and I’m definitely not Ginger Spice, so last night I exorcised a few teenage demons by popping by the launch party for Girlcore‘s new book and exhibition at the Orange Dot Gallery.

For the uninitiated, Girlcore is the kind of project  I wish had been around when I was 16, kicking about with my hair twisted into a poor imitation of Bjorks’ and consoling my best friends over the break-up of Take That. It’s an online and real-life community of like-minded girls who provide a showcase for other like-minded girls working in the creative industry, in the kind of supportive, mutually inclusive environment that makes me want to put on a Patti Smith record. The online portfolio of works from photographers and illustrators is an inspiring collection; it’s genuinely a club you might want to belong to. And nobody is screaming BLOODY FEMINISTS at them… and it doesn’t scare off the boys either. I know because I saw some last night.

The girls behind the Girlcore concept started out as friends still high on festival vibes who wanted to recreate their summer of love in the form of a London club night. Using their network of DJ and promoter friends, they started to build this mini-empire which was all about pushing forward their equality as talented female mates. From there grew the website, the online portfolio and now this book and exhibition which kind of solidifies the Girlcore identity. The influences and role models are varied, old and new; they’re Peaches and they’re Virginia Woolf and everyone in-between who has ever inspired anyone to do something creative.

West’s team met with film companies and government officials from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha Qatar to discuss the possibility of a production. A source involved in the negotiations told The Observer: “In Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha all of the film initiatives are government controlled. A bidding war is going on between various government entities and private investors to fund the film. There’s pretty intense rivalry here between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar. They all want to claim the film as their own and take credit for generating the publicity.”

Meanwhile, hasn’t there been enough war in the Middle East without Kanye West stirring up the pot?

But causing any strife is the furthest thing from Kanye’s mind. After performing a concert in Abu Dhabi, Ye apparently fell in love with the Persian Gulf region and envisioned the film to be an accurate depiction of it and its people. So strong is Kanye’s conviction to keepin’ it real that he and his team are even moving to the Gulf in a few weeks to soak up the culture. According to another source, “Kanye is looking to bridge the cultural divide and break misconceptions.”

Let’s just hope Kanye can resist going H.A.M. while he’s in the Persian Gulf before we start talking Nobel Peace Prizes — I hear they’re not to keen on the pork over there. [Observer]

Macy’s is fighting to stave off a deal Martha signed with JC Penney — allegedly behind their back — while trying to keep the brand all to themselves. Stewart had sold a 16.6% stake in its company to J.C. Penney back in December to begin selling there in February 2013, directly after the deal with Macy’s was set to expire. However, Macy’s decided to extend its contract with the brand for another five years on January 23, the same day it also decided to sue Martha and co. Macy’s is now seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia from going any further in its deal with Penney’s, though that deal is still a year away.

“MSLO’s announcement of its deal with J.C. Penney…devalued the Martha Stewart products that Macy’s is currently selling, in ways that are not calculable,” Macy’s claims in its breach of contract suit. “MSLO has severely damaged the ‘crucial connection’ between Macy’s and Martha Stewart that Macy’s has devoted years and tens of millions of dollars to developing; it has destroyed the public perception that Macy’s is the only place a consumer can turn to to purchase Martha Stewart home products in key categories.”

The suit also makes reference to that dark, poncho-filled time in Martha’s life when she was sent to prison and her company’s image and reputation were subsequently tarnished: “At the time Macy’s negotiated and entered into the agreement in 2005 and early 2006, the ‘Martha Stewart’ brand was under pressure by very public proceedings and their aftermath involving Ms. Stewart.”

Well, if Macy’s wins this case, things are going to be super awkward at the dinner table and no amount of parsley can garnish away the things said in the heat of battle. [WWD, sub req'd]

The models truly are heavenly as Nigeria’s greatest natural resource is clearly its stunning youth. Literally, pluck any girl from the low-rent, no budget knockoff of America’s Next Top Model — imaginatively titled Africa’s Next Supermodel — and throw her on the runway or the cover of Italian Vogue. And the men, while hopelessly narcissistic, kind of have the right to be — just take a look at the part of the episode where some male models discuss the endowment of Nigerian men. Cocky doesn’t even begin to describe it.

One Ms. McArthur Joseph and I dragged ourselves from whatever gutter we were last seen in to 14th St for the opening of STASH, a new dance party by actual promoter Michael Cohen — the queen behind such past party favorites as Su Casa, Summer Camp and Phoenix Fridays. You’ll come for the open bar from 10 to 11 but stay for the best thing that ever happened to the gays, DJ Martial – shutting it down with a nonstop mix of dance classics from yesterqueer and togay.  And the aesthetically-pleasing clientele touted as “jocks, nerds, nerdy jocks, twinks, 3 bears, lots of models and gays with jobs” ain’t half bad either.

STASH is every Wednesday — Lord knows for how long but let’s hope well into the warm months — from 10 pm to 3 am at 248 W 14th St. Dancing is back in New York!!!

Rocawear will debut its first ever television campaign titled “From Marcy to Madison Square” starring the Jigga Man and chronicling his oft-told rise from the Marcy Projects of Bedford Stuyvesant — otherwise known as The Livest One — in Brooklyn to selling out shows in Madison Square Garden. The spot will utilize footage from Jay and Kanye West‘s Watch the Throne concert at MSG in November.

“This is a really big deal, and fashion companies don’t usually use television. We are investing in the brand,” said chief marketing officer Jameel Spencer. “We are looking to spend more money than we did in the past in marketing this brand.”

Said brand has a total of 26 licenses around the world including children’s wear and newly signed swimwear, home goods and watch licensing deals. Whether the company plans to include a range of feminine hygiene products was not available at press time. Like the rest of the fashion world, Rocawear has also begun to focus heavily on the Asian market.

As for Jay-Z, speculation over his continued involvement with the brand should — much like Baby Blue Ivy — be put to rest. Along with the commercial, Jay has strengthened his relationship with Rocawear by renewing his contract to endorse the brand into 2014. [WWD, sub req'd]

Willy Vanderperre captured Julia Frauche as a modern day pin-up girl in looks from Wu’s spring 2012 collection. With an emphasis on silhouette and sophistication, the designer decided to infuse an element of chaos by posting the ads all over Manhattan’s streets, adding, “The juxtaposition between the downtown-uptown vibe feels so right for my first campaign.” [WWD]

My question was: “What piece of clothing makes you feel best about the world?” 

Penn Badgley: “The ethics of manufacturing – it’s a grey area that I know nothing about. So I’m gonna have to say my Calvin Klein underwear.” Nothing comes between them.

Alexa Chung: “My mum gave me some trainers. Sneakers.” #Mummysgirl

Paul Manza, Yogi: “Under-onesies. Why should you be restricted around the waist? It’s bad for digestion and internal organs. There are many ways to keep your pants up that don’t constrict the waist.” He is currently developing these under-onesies for production, I’ll keep you posted. Shanee Pink, Musician: “I always love the story about jeans, how Levi created them for workers but it became a fashion basic that everybody has. I like when fashion is not that distant. I like people on the street with all their layering. So jeans was a grass roots movement that happened. But I barely wear jeans. I like TOMS because they make you have a purpose with you fashion choice. It’s the future. Why this party is such a cool thing is because it has purpose.” Now, listen to her croon with her electric guitar and rad band.

Some other responses from the crowd included little bracelets from Costa Rica that cost nothing here and yet provide a livelihood for someone across the world. Another likes to buy things from people in the streets, because it’s a better gig than begging. Sweaters help one guy feel better about the world, while his friend makes the argument for shoes. He also alleges that scarves are the least useful things. I asked one of the night’s coordinators, Sarabeth, her item? “Scarves. Especially this chiffon one right here. They are versatile and can travel anywhere.” It was a night of confronting differences, and embracing them.

Lindsey Wixon and I did not address my question. She did, however, tell me her favorite news source: BBC. She likes that they actually send reporters on location to report back with real footage. It’s not local, petty, cats-and-celebrity news at BBC; it covers real world issues.

Sean Ono Lennon meanwhile, has been doing his due diligence to learn about the issues on Wall Street. He expounded the inner-workings of artificial inflation, and that the state of corporations in this country is equivalent to a plutarchy, among other unjust notions. In that time he recommended two books: Temple of the Center of Time by David Flynn and Currency Wars by Song Hongbing. More than just a little night reading.

One of the deepest messages of The Awareness Experiment seemed to be to talk, engage and share with one another. Ask questions. Get into deep conversations with new acquaintances, let ideas bounce around, and leave your mind open to change. When we’re all open to listening to one another, we will evolve and make change happen.

On Friday, the CFDA signed a 10-year lease on a new 9,310-square-ft office space at 65 Bleecker Street, where it plans to move this summer. Nanette Lepore, a staunch supporter of the Save the Garment Center movement, couldn’t help but express her concern: “We are extremely disappointed by the CFDA’s decision to leave the Garment Center. We only hope this does not signal the end of their previous support for New York City manufacturing and emerging American designers.”

Anthony Lilore, a founding member of Save the Garment Center, was a bit more equivocal: “Symbolically, I do think it is a black eye, but the New York Times is not located in Times Square, Sullivan Street Bakery is not on Sullivan Street and Madison Square Garden is not at Madison Square, so the CFDA should be where the designers are and that could just as easily be L.A. [Ed. note: No it couldn't.] but they are still in New York City. I wish them well in their new home.” Adding,  ”I think that, symbolically, it’s not right, but the industry has changed so much over the past 20 years and even five years that I don’t think it makes a whole lot of difference where they are.”

Citing a need for more space and a lack of prime real estate in the Garment District, CFDA CEO Steven Kolb insisted that his organization would nevertheless remain committed to its old home: “The CFDA is still there and to what extent the other stakeholders are disappointed about the move, our work is going to keep going. We are not abandoning anything. Our commitment stays strong.”
