Which samples have you been sampling perhaps a bit too much before the show?

Darlene: I love the short mini skirt, and the turtleneck sweatshirt. I love the knitted sweatshirt with the two-toned pants and the varsity jacket.

Lizzy: She’s taking all my looks right now.

D: And I know a lot of people were kind of quirky about it, but the moto jacket.

L: In plastic!

D: You can be stylish in the rain.

Which look changed the most since the initial sketch.

D: This time we kind of knew what we wanted. It was more of getting that statement piece and saying I’m going left while you’re going right. It was all about vibrant colors. It’s wintertime, it’s dark. I wanted to bring confidence to me.

What was the difference between designing for yourself versus your target market?

L: I wouldn’t say it was easy because Darlene and I have different styles, but it was more fun. We looked at everything like, I want that, and that, and that.

D: Actually I’m buying [the floor length varsity jacket]. That’s my number one must have.

L: Stealing it, more likely.

What was that feeling like when you first had the thought, “I’m not going to be afraid of color this fall,” as you said in the pre-show video. 

L: We’ve been saying that for seasons! From the beginning we’ve wanted to just go out with color, but we were like, ohh would people like that? But this season it was, why wouldn’t people like that? If people like what you do and enjoy your work season by season, they’re going to learn to just to ride with this new season.

It was a bold move. Those green and yellow wools, ooh! They’re so rich! 

D: That was the wacky tacky outfit!

You’re sisters, so I’m sure you have a lifetime of practice, but how do you compromise design decisions?

L: It’s a natural thing. We shared a room forever! When you’ve been able to live with someone for so long, and be forced to go everywhere with them and hang out with them, that relationship is inevitable.

D: We’re business partners. And if we ever decided we want to go our separate ways, our Dad would look at us like we were crazy. I would get the phone call first because I’m the oldest.

L: We still get yelled at by our parents.

When did you get to sleep last night?

L: We didn’t!

D: I did, I went to sleep at like 10 o’clock.

L: You can’t when you’re wiggling around thinking, OHH this has to be sewn by the morning. 

D: What’s frustrating is when you’re trying to sleep and you’re dreaming about the clothes.

L: I had a piece of fabric thrown at me in my sleep! Just flying off the shelves, hitting me. That’s called anxiety.

D: Fashion nightmare.

Through a collaboration with Modelinia, Kaleidcoscope launches today on Android with versions for the iPhone and iPad expected soon.  With the app, users can see about 10 results from different stores for each clickable item.  “Sometimes it’s the exact look. It’s similar to the idea of the look for less that people do in fashion — but it’s not just about a cheaper thing,” explained Sarah Kunst, director of business development for Kaleidoscope. “It can be a more expensive or a similar version.”

His name is Shail Upadhya. He’s a retired U.N. Official from Nepal who is now a stylist in NYC. He also makes his own suits. He’s styled them after the iconic YSL Mondrian print, Kandinsky artwork, stripes, dots, checks, you name it. This week, he came in a jacket he imagined up to pay tribute to The Beatles.

In celebration of the anniversary of The Beatles coming to America on February 7, 1964, Shail Upadhya crafted a suit with John Lennon‘s self portrait on repeat.

When The Fab Four came to America, Shail was in London where he lived with his ambassador parents. “At that time I had heard of The Beatles. They weren’t as popular in London as they were in the U.S. London and Liverpool also had a bit of a rivalry. London kind of looked down on Liverpool.”

Soon after their arrival in the U.S., the negativity was shattered. Like many a-boomer, he grew up with their music as his soundtrack.  His fav fab tunes?  Here Comes the Sun and HELP!

Shail Upadhya loves paying homage and saluting people in different fields of art through fashion.

Bloomberg was on hand to outline the fashion industry’s economic impact on the city, noting that New York’s Fashion Weeks are  set to rake in a record-breaking $865 million and 252,000 visitors to our fair-ish city this year; and that the industry accounts for 5.7% of the city’s workforce, employing some 173,000 people and generating almost $2 billion in yearly tax revenue.

As part of his Fashion NYC 2020 program, the Mayor announced the following five initiatives to encourage growth and development  in the industry:

• Introducing a free mini M.B.A.-type program for 35 participants through a partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology.

• Lead a search for New York City’s most innovative retailer that will result in free temporary retail space, marketing and public relations.

• Create a fund to provide loans to emerging designers provided they use local manufacturers to produce their collections.

• Establish a fellowship program for fashion management, and reach out to more interns and college students through a coordinated effort with Parsons The New School for Design.

• Set up a job placement program for college graduates.

His Honor emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent, the city’s “intellectual capital,” over trying to manufacture garments domestically, especially since China and its obscenely low production costs make competition unlikely. Her Honor, DVF, added that China’s slipping on its pimping with increasing costs, spurring designers to bring some of their production back to the Big Apple. Bloom then rebutted, “China is the marketplace of the future. That’s where America is going to sell its goods to.” City Officials, however, are interested in a “Made in a NY” label for fashion, just as it has for film and TV.

When talk turned to the CFDA’s recent decision to leave the Garment District, DVF shut it down, toot-sweet: “We looked very hard to find what we needed. We at the CFDA, we represent downtown. We represent midtown. We are New York. We are fashion. We promote staying here. We promote manufacturing here. Clearly, we are doing our job,” adding for good measure, “I should be a politician.”

“It’s an incredible achievement and means that people are paying close attention to the brand [Dior] when it speaks,” said Alex Mendoza of Stylophane, a company that monitors crap figures like this. “They have an incredible brand and they are saying things that are bringing people back.”

Dior’s 12 posts during the month of January racked up around 13,000 likes each. Other luxury brands who are popular with the kids today include Chanel with an average 7,200 likes per post (lpp), social media juggernaut Burberry, which averaged about 6,800 lpp and The Art of Travel by Louis Vuitton, clocking in almost 4,400 lpp.

“Carine Roitfed. She has such great style.  I would love to raid her closet, for her shoes. We have the same size shoe and we used to share shoes.” I ask her if there are any shoes in particular she would snatch. “All of them.” Well-played, Lara Stone. Well-played.

Stone, the official fashion ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, is whisked away in a tornado of Prager’s creation as part of the automaker’s “Icons of Style” campaign, featuring the SL Roadster. Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Vertigo and a bit of the Brothers Grimm, Prager tells a modern day fairytale with Stone as the beautiful blonde “with dark, suspicious undertones,” to borrow the photographer’s words. To achieve the “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” vibe, the super was strapped into a harness and flown around the air — a process she actually enjoyed.

“My favorite part of working with Alex was all of her crazy ideas!” Stone says. “Hanging in a harness was so much fun and a great change from just standing around [posing].” Of course, at this point in her career, Lara Stone is no stranger to uncomfortable situations. When I ask her what was one of her favorite shoots, she immediately mentions her latest campaign for Calvin Klein, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

“The rocks were so sharp! I love that campaign, all those bright, different color jeans, but laying on the rocks was very uncomfortable,” she says with a laugh. “They were sharp and it was hot with big waves crashing over us. Very scary! When I saw the final shots though, it was totally worth it. I always love working with them [Mert and Marcus].”

Wondering what, if any, of her plans were outside of modeling, Lara responds simply, “I just got a puppy and I want to hang out with him. His name is Bert and he’s a boarder terrier.” I’ve never been much for dogs, though lately I’ve been contemplating getting one, so I took this opportunity to do a little research. “What size is he?” I ask. “Oh, you know…dog-sized.” She then  attempts to approximate Bert with her  arms, and he seems a little big for my taste.

“We have sort of an office dog,” I venture. In truth, we have like five office dogs —  one of them’s wandering around now as I write this. But I single out the pug, who makes the most regular appearances in the FashionIndie office. “Oh, they’re so cute!” she exclaims and we discuss the general cuteness of the tiny little monsters and their giant bug eyes. Then I mention that his name is Napoleon. “Does he have the complex?” she asks, not missing a beat.

Meanwhile, I wish I  had brought along a rimshot if I had known Lara Stone would be serving shtick.

Michael Bastian’s set is looking natural, but a little bit lavish. 

I love that you used the word lavish!

How does your aesthetic change between a show with the classic American prep of Michael Bastian versus some of the more wild designers?

It was important to give Michael Bastian a refined look, as soon as people walk in the door. They’re used to him being a little big sporty, but this season it’s very refined. I approach all my shows with same intensity. People always ask, what has been your favorite show? They all become your babies when you’re in the middle of making them. It’s a constant evolution from the minute you have the idea till the lights go on.

What past experience led you to being the Creative Director on so many top shows like Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, and now Michael Bastian?

I come out of the fashion magazine world. I was a fashion editor for many many moons. I always felt my job was not just get people excited by the clothes, but to almost make the clothes feel legendary within the picture. I was coming up in an era where we were making clothes famous.

Runway Music: Despite hearing about her nonstop for the past few weeks, this was my first time actually hearing Lana del Rey. Her ”National Anthem” kicked off the show and I wasn’t completely offended by what I heard. Who knew?

The British songstress swept the competition, taking home all six awards for which she was nominated, including Album of the Year for 21 and Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep.” She is only the second female to win six Grammys in one night, the first — of course — being Beyoncé in 2010. Ms. Adkins also debuted the return of her voice after vocal surgery by belting out “in the Deep.” Though this was undeniably Adele’s night, the untimely passing of Whitney Houston cast a large shadow over the show with Jennifer Hudson bringing down the house in a stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love You”

Hudson’s emotional performance was one of several poignant moments during the telecast, including Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt paying tribute to the late Etta James and Amy Winehouse‘s parents accepting their daughter’s trophy with Tony Bennett for their duet, “Body and Soul.”

While Adele had to hitch a U-Haul to her limo to take home her six trophies, the Foo Fighters walked away with five including Best Rock Album for Wasting Light while Kanye West won four, including Best Rap Album for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Best Rap Song for “All of the Lights.”

Last but certainly not least, one Ms. Diana Ross was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, her first Grammy after 800 years in the business. The supreme diva took to the stage in a cloud of hair at the end of the night to present Adele with her Album of the Year award. And while the show featured countless moments that would best be forgotten — I’m looking at you Katy Perry and Taylor Swift — the symbolic passing of the torch from Whitney to Jennifer and Ms. Ross to Adele made this a night to remember.

Congrats on the move! Any news on the progress?

Architects are measuring the space, and we’ll be seeing the first round of designs next week. We’ll decide on the final design by end of the month. It will be built by Spring.

How do you plan on continuing to promote the Garment Center even though you’ve moving away from it?

We have the CFDA Incubator program there in the Garment Center. We have 6 designers graduating this spring, and we’re helping them all to find studio space there. We’re seeding the neighborhood. We’ve got 10 more designers we’re helping find space there. We are also conducting a study with the Made in Midtown Design Trust for Public Space to see how we can use the Garment Center better.

And CFDA prospectives on your horizon? What new designers have you excited this season?

I can’t name any. I like every show, I just like going to the shows. I love the collective energy of talented designers and creative people. Fashion Week is one big giant long runway!

What’s the first thing you’re going to do once the giant runway of Fashion Week has come to a close?

I’m going to my house in Pennsylvania to relax.

Front Row Name Drops: Tried my darndest but I couldn’t recognize anyone. Guess it’s time I brush up on my directory of mid-range celebrities.

Runway Music: “Too Insistent” by The Dø

The power couple filed the trademark under Beyonce’s company BGK Trademark Holdings and if it gets approved, they will be able to use their daughter’s name for brands or endorsements.  The original intent though was to protect the baby from future annoyances since the Patent Office has denied two attempts by other parties to trademark the name already, noting the name belonged to a “very famous infant”.  Sigh, #powerbabyproblems

- Liza Minnelli had to drop out of her Hot in Cleveland guest spot thanks to an injury. And that’s why you don’t challenge Betty White to a bare-knuckle street brawl. [Playbill]

- Milk rules everything around me. New York Fashion Week, y’all!  The Wu-Tang Clan brought a little bit of Shaolin to the fashion set last night at Milk Studios. [Paper]

- Gisele‘s Victoria’s Secret brethren (sisteren?) are rushing-ish to her defense after the fallout over Betrayed-Bro-gate. Quote Adriana Lima: “Leave her alone!”  [Vogue UK]

- Madonna responded to Flipped-Bird-gate, calling M.I.A.’s middle finger gesture a  ”teenager … irrelevant thing to do.” Then 80s Madonna responded to Now Madonna’s statement by flipping herself the bird and  telling her future self to lighten the fuck up. [Huff Po]

- Skin care brand REN decided to get all porny to celebrate their 10th anniversary with this soft-core bit of marketing. The protagonists may feel clean but I know that I could use a shower. [Fashionista]

Mood: Mysterious bad behavior
Statement Pieces: The tuxedo storm at the end of the show and coat with huge fur collar
Front Row Name Drops: Kellan Lutz
Gossip: “It’s so cold, this is ridiculous.” Wherever the hot gossip is, I’m apparently not.
Runway Music: One long, brooding and gloriously dark piece, seemingly original

The print mashup was sliced from Coromandel screens and the Qing Long Dynasty floral motif. Fused together digitally, they are now printed on fabrics not quite as luscious as in her ready to wear collection, but look just as vibrant. The price ranges from $80 – $700 (she’s still designer, after all), and they’re yours for the taking in one week!

Color Palette: Blacks and blues, rosy hues, some mean greens and a bold print here and there.

Statement Pieces: I’m always a fan of a sack and this number was  a personal favorite — like something a younger, sexier Grandma Yetta would wear on a date.

Makeup: There were bejeweled collars which — understandably — took my attention from the models’ faces.

Front Row Name Drops: Someone left the door to Terry Richardson‘s gutter open and he waltzed in shortly before the show started. Front row regulars Mickey Boardman, Derek Blasberg and Waris Ahluwalia. I also thought I saw fitness celebrity John Basedow, but sadly, I was mistaken.

Runway Music: All right, confession time. See, there were waiters walking around with mini-bottles of Prosecco, right. And I was already clawing at the bottom of mine by the time the lights dimmed. So between that and my obsessive tweeting, kinda missed that part. But it was loud, if that helps. #fail

SD: I saw you sitting front row next to Anna Wintour at Fashion Week. Genius! Such a fabulous couple. What was going through your thoughts?

NM: Yes! I was screaming out loud inside my head. Me sitting next to the Queen of Vogue! It was such a strange experience. I felt like I was dreaming. And I thought she would be snobby or something. But she was so incredibly sweet to me.

So now, how can you be a part of NYFW?  Well aside from the 90 official shows at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tents there are about 250 more all over the city, from pop up galleries to studio lofts to showrooms to Milk Studios (aka the cool kids version of Lincoln Center) and if you dress stylishly enough, crashing is pretty common.  If you don’t happen to be one of the 100,000 expected attendees in NYC, have no fear you can still enter to win!  Around 30-40 shows have become accessible for viewing online on different live stream channels (YouTube, MilkMade, and NowFashion are our favorite) and some brands are even putting their shows on their own websites a la Marc Jacobs.  Leave us a comment about which designers spoke to you, which trends you think are most prevalent, which collections were just hideous.  We want to hear it all so start now!
