For a young company in their fifth season, whose palette has thus far been hovering in neutrals and black, the jump to technicolor might be a risky one. Will fans follow suit? Given the gasp-inducing melange of colored wools, accented with deceptive plastic pieces and vivid hues, they’re likely to garner a slew of new fans along the way. <span

I love the knitted sweatshirt with the two-toned pants and the varsity jacket.

Lizzy: She’s taking all my looks right now.

D: And I know a lot of people were kind of quirky about it, but the moto jacket.

L: In plastic!

D: You can be stylish in the rain.

Which look changed the most since the initial sketch.

D: This time we kind of knew what we wanted. It was more of getting that statement piece and saying I’m going left while you’re going right. It was all about vibrant colors. It’s wintertime, it’s dark. I wanted to bring confidence to me.

What was the difference between designing for yourself versus your target market?

L: I wouldn’t say it was easy because Darlene and I have different styles, but it was more fun. We looked at everything like, I want that, and that, and that.

D: Actually I’m buying [the floor length varsity jacket]. That’s my number one must have.

L: Stealing it, more likely.

What was that feeling like when you first had the thought, “I’m not going to be afraid of color this fall,” as you said in the pre-show video.

L: We’ve been saying that for seasons! From the beginning we’ve wanted to just go out with color, but we were like, ohh would people like that? But this season it was, why wouldn’t people like that? If people like what you do and enjoy your work season by season, they’re going to learn to just to ride with this new season.

It was a bold move. Those green and yellow wools, ooh! They’re so rich!

D: That was the wacky tacky outfit!

You’re sisters, so I’m sure you have a lifetime of practice, but how do you compromise design decisions?

L: It’s a natural thing. We shared a room forever! When you’ve been able to live with someone for so long, and be forced to go everywhere with them and hang out with them, that relationship is inevitable.

D: We’re business partners. And if we ever decided we want to go our separate ways, our Dad would look at us like we were crazy. I would get the phone call first because I’m the oldest.

L: We still get yelled at by our parents.

When did you get to sleep last night?

L: We didn’t!

D: I did, I went to sleep at like 10 o’clock.

L: You can’t when you’re wiggling around thinking, OHH this has to be sewn by the morning.

D: What’s frustrating is when you’re trying to sleep and you’re dreaming about the clothes.

L: I had a piece of fabric thrown at me in my sleep! Just flying off the shelves, hitting me. That’s called anxiety.

D: Fashion nightmare.

Enjoy the technicolor fashion dream of William Okpo:

Some Dude Just Seriously One-Upped You This Valentine’s Day

CULTURE

dress made of 9999 roses

flower gown

rose couture gown

rose gown

valentine's day
<guid

If you’ve been to The Tents, you’ve seen him and probably wonder, who the heck is he? This mysteriously matching man rocked a John Lennon suit this New York Fashion Week. The deeply rooted Beatles fan in me suddenly had to know more about him and his sartorial choice of Lennon that caused quite a stir. So I asked. <span

Official from Nepal who is now a stylist in NYC. He also makes his own suits. He’s styled them after the iconic YSL Mondrian print, Kandinsky artwork, stripes, dots, checks, you name it. This week, he came in a jacket he imagined up to pay tribute to The Beatles.

In celebration of the anniversary of The Beatles coming to America on February 7, 1964, <a

They weren’t as popular in London as they were in the U.S. London and Liverpool also had a bit of a rivalry. London kind of looked down on Liverpool.”

Soon after their arrival in the U.S., the negativity was shattered. Like many a-boomer, he grew up with their music as his soundtrack. His fav fab tunes? Here Comes the Sun and HELP!

Shail Upadhya loves paying homage and saluting people in different fields of art through fashion.

And hopefully he’ll help fight back against people who tweet “<a

Once relegated to the awkward nip slip, now the tits forward march dominates catwalk, and we love the sheer audacity. These are looks that may remind your man how sexy you can look in that see-thru floor length Yigal Azrouël, if only he buys it for you. Share your desire to replicate these runway looks at home alone with him, then layer into them when you step out in the big bad sadly non-nudist world. She met Monday morning with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and US Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) to discuss New York’s fashion industry and introduce five initiatives to help foster future generations of designers. Because as a great lady once crooned, the children are our future. <span

Her Honor, DVF, added that China’s slipping on its pimping with increasing costs, spurring designers to bring some of their production back to the Big Apple. Bloom then rebutted, “China is the marketplace of the future. That’s where America is going to sell its goods to.” City Officials, however, are interested in a “Made in a NY” label for fashion, just as it has for film and TV.

When talk turned to the CFDA’s recent decision to leave the Garment District, DVF shut it down, toot-sweet: “We looked very hard to find what we needed. We at the CFDA, we represent downtown. We represent midtown. We are New York. We are fashion. We promote staying here. We promote manufacturing here. Clearly, we are doing our job,” adding for good measure, “I should be a politician.”

Diane von Furstenberg for Mayor, anyone? [<a

The song’s slow breathy quality with The Civil Wars‘ drum lines and harmonies throw the warlike melancholia into sharp relief. Lines of love along signs of horror is how The Hunger Games satiates, but let’s hope the movie doesn’t brood quite so much as this music video. <span

I smell Oscar dresses. It’s no surprise Reem Acra showed some of the most beautifully beaded gowns I’ve seen all week for Fall 2012, but the rest of the collection was just as interesting. Ladylike suits woven with metallic threads were accessorized with chic matching luggage. Leather pieces in black, burgundy and forest green demonstrated Acra’s affinity for impeccably tailored, sophisticated and body-conscious design. Thigh high slits, cutouts and sheer panels drove the evening wear to another level of red carpet worthiness. It’s guaranteed whoever wears Fall 2012 Acra during awards season will land on the best dressed list. If the dress fits properly of course.

<span

Compare that to the 100,000-plus post likes at Converse and it looks like quality trumps quantity — a first in Facebook’s short but trashy history.collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. During our little chat in the swanky Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge, I tried to explain the concept of a spirit animal — I muttered something about Native American mythology as the concept isn’t particularly clear to me either — but I feared that it would be lost somewhere in translation. After a few more explanations, we finally got around to the heart of the question – ”Who is your celebrity spirit animal?” As soon as she said the name, I realized the answer was fairly clear.<span

She has such great style. I would love to raid her closet, for her shoes. We have the same size shoe and we used to share shoes.” I ask her if there are any shoes in particular she would snatch. “All of them.” Well-played, Lara Stone. Well-played.

Stone, the official fashion ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, is whisked away in a tornado of Prager’s creation as part of the automaker’s “Icons of Style” campaign, featuring the SL Roadster. Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Vertigo and a bit of the Brothers Grimm, Prager tells a modern day fairytale with Stone as the beautiful blonde “with dark, suspicious undertones,” to borrow the photographer’s words. To achieve the “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” vibe, the super was strapped into a harness and flown around the air — a process she actually enjoyed.

“My favorite part of working with Alex was all of her crazy ideas!” Stone says. “Hanging in a harness was so much fun and a great change from just standing around [posing].” Of course, at this point in her career, Lara Stone is no stranger to uncomfortable situations. When I ask her what was one of her favorite shoots, she immediately mentions her latest campaign for Calvin Klein, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

“The rocks were so sharp! I love that campaign, all those bright, different color jeans, but laying on the rocks was very uncomfortable,” she says with a laugh. “They were sharp and it was hot with big waves crashing over us. Very scary! When I saw the final shots though, it was totally worth it. I always love working with them [Mert and Marcus].”

Wondering what, if any, of her plans were outside of modeling, Lara responds simply, “I just got a puppy and I want to hang out with him. His name is Bert and he’s a boarder terrier.” I’ve never been much for dogs, though lately I’ve been contemplating getting one, so I took this opportunity to do a little research. “What size is he?” I ask. “Oh, you know…dog-sized.” She then attempts to approximate Bert with her arms, and he seems a little big for my taste.

“We have sort of an office dog,” I venture. In truth, we have like five office dogs — one of them’s wandering around now as I write this. But I single out the pug, who makes the most regular appearances in the FashionIndie office. “Oh, they’re so cute!” she exclaims and we discuss the general cuteness of the tiny little monsters and their giant bug eyes. Then I mention that his name is Napoleon. “Does he have the complex?” she asks, not missing a beat.

Meanwhile, I wish I had brought along a rimshot if I had known Lara Stone would be serving shtick.

INTERVIEW: Creative Director Stefan Campbell Makes Magic at Michael Bastian

CULTURE

FASHION

#nyfw

Abbey Lee Kershaw

aedes

alexander wang

chadwick bell

jason wu

Joan Smalls

Karlie Kloss

marc by marc jacobs

mary kate and ashley olsen

Michael Bastian

new york fashion week

Stefan Cambpell

the row
<guid

This team of set builders were being kindly and meticulously directed by Stefan Campbell, the man responsible for translating Michael Bastian‘s collection into a three dimensional space that garners an emotional reaction from the audience before the clothes hit the runway. Earlier this week, he removed the front row so Chadwick Bell could have a 14 foot-wide glowing fuchsia runway instead of seven. Today, he’ll be scenting Michael Bastian’s show with Aedes. After speaking with Stefan today, we can confirm that he knows the tricks to making a runway show magical. See Stefan Campbell’s secret tips and advice at the end of the interview. And we’ll go see the show now. <span

They’re used to him being a little big sporty, but this season it’s very refined. I approach all my shows with same intensity. People always ask, what has been your favorite show? They all become your babies when you’re in the middle of making them. Show attendees walked down the sloping hill to Wollman Rink in Central Park where hot rum ciders and roasted chestnuts awaited us before the show began. The rink, surround by trees set aglow by brilliantly colored lights, soon filled with the sights of figure skaters and sounds of The Harlem Boys Choir belting out Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, all dressed in Moncler. The numbers that followed were truly spectacular, and you can watch them all right here.

<span

Along two leafy backdrops, models stood on white platforms wearing 20 looks from the designer, and it’s easy to see that Cioci knows how young women want to dress. In both the tailored and more flowing pieces, the mood was all about the power of femininity: ruffles and pleats to subtly accentuate curves in all the right places, cutouts and sheer panels perfectly placed around erogenous zones. Practical yet incredibly gorgeous fur pieces reinforced her luxurious yet wearable line mentality.

<span

Vines of ivy twisted their way along brick columns and trees fully in bloom sat in their own separate little fields. If not for the giant catwalk winding around those fields, I would’ve expected a tea party to commence at any second. From this setting I also expected very light, dainty, ladylike fare – but from the first look it was apparent that the house that Tommy built was not serving tea. A thread of military dressing ran through the collection, centered heavily on coats in shearling, bonded leather and Melton wool. Dresses in silk suggested a ladylike quality, but this lady’s ready to face the ravages of fall and stare it down till the spring. <span

With the Academy Awards basically around the corner, it’s a safe bet that The Artist and Dujardin are the picture and actor to beat – respectively – and with this win, Meryl might be well on her way to claiming her third Oscar statuette. The British songstress swept the competition, taking home all six awards for which she was nominated, including Album of the Year for 21 and Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep.” She is only the second female to win six Grammys in one night, the first — of course — being Beyoncé in 2010. Ms. Adkins also debuted the return of her voice after vocal surgery by belting out “in the Deep.” Though this was undeniably Adele’s night, the untimely passing of Whitney Houston cast a large shadow over the show with Jennifer Hudson bringing down the house in a stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love You”<span

I overheard him tell another journalist, “I do all the work, Diane takes all the credit. It’s established and out in the open.” It’s quite alright with all parties involved; if he didn’t do the lion’s share of the CFDA workload, when would DVF possibly have time to create a collection and run her powerhouse? That said, on the 50th anniversary of the CFDA, there is much excitement abounds with the <a

Any news on the progress?

Architects are measuring the space, and we’ll be seeing the first round of designs next week. We’ll decide on the final design by end of the month. It will be built by Spring.

How do you plan on continuing to promote the Garment Center even though you’ve moving away from it?

We have the CFDA Incubator program there in the Garment Center. We have 6 designers graduating this spring, and we’re helping them all to find studio space there. We’re seeding the neighborhood. We’ve got 10 more designers we’re helping find space there. We are also conducting a study with the Made in Midtown Design Trust for Public Space to see how we can use the Garment Center better.

And CFDA prospectives on your horizon? What new designers have you excited this season?

I can’t name any. I like every show, I just like going to the shows. I love the collective energy of talented designers and creative people. After not showing a spring 2012 collection, I wondered about the fate of the Parisian New Yorker. But it seems the brand is very alive and very well after seeing the Fall/Winter 2012 collection this morning. Fierce and mysterious, the Malandrino woman is a lady by day in cashmere and silk crepe. But by night, a seductive creature of the dark emerges, bound in leather and embellished tulle, wrapped in luxurious fox furs of electric hues. Spring woes undeniably aside, Malandrino may have shown her best collection yet.

<span

Bulldog gin martinis were followed by five beautiful dishes by executive chef Vivek Singh and copious amounts of wine. Among my favorite bites were bombay spiced vegetables with cumin and truffle ‘pao’ and clove smoked saddle of lamb with onion and ginger sauce. I almost dove into the ginger toffee pudding with cinnamon ice cream face first it was so delicious. Click through to see photos from the experience.

Leave a comment with a juicy story below and our favorite entry will win a FashionIndie spa package worth over $500!

So now, how can you be a part of NYFW? Well aside from the 90 official shows at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tents there are about 250 more all over the city, from pop up galleries to studio lofts to showrooms to Milk Studios (aka the cool kids version of Lincoln Center) and if you dress stylishly enough, crashing is pretty common. If you don’t happen to be one of the 100,000 expected attendees in NYC, have no fear you can still enter to win! Around 30-40 shows have become accessible for viewing online on different live stream channels (YouTube, MilkMade, and <a

Fashionably late, and several dirty 90s hip hop songs in, we realized it was not Theophilus spinning. The new garde fashionisto had already made moves for a more (literally) underground party at the W Hotel‘s former Downstairs, the new Lilium. Well played, sir. He edited the organza sculptures he had become known for. He even gave up his trademark word fierce. Siriano may be evolving as a designer, but who for? Himself? The CFDA? The fashionistas of the world? Or the women who actually shop? Eric Wilson explores all these channels in this week’s Thursday Styles section of the NYTimes, where we discover a more mature, more approachable Siriano than we’ve grown used to knowing. <a
