Focus on being remarkable and profit will follow!
Recently I have come across a flurry of very talented designers who seem to be focused solely on artistic expression with profit being viewed as a by-product of creating something truly amazing – This is also true for a few brave retailers, especially in the fashion sector where artistic expression is so highly regarded.
In today’s climate I think it is increasingly important to stay true to the essence of your business and not get carried away with what others are doing. From my own perspective as an independent designer I am constantly torn between satisfying my own creative desires and that of my target audience.
However, recently I have decided not to target anyone at all, I will create the shoes that I love and if others love them too, that’s brilliant and if not, then so be it. I think if you do anything with enough passion and dedication others will inevitably be drawn towards you.
Now I’m not for one moment suggesting that a retailer totally disregard their target audience and focus solely on their own creative desires, after all, you are running a business and you have bills to pay but I do think it’s important for a business to have a real strong sense-of-self and not be afraid to go against the grain.
You can’t please everyone and in the long run, if you focus on what you truly believe in, you’re almost guaranteed to create something remarkable, whether it’s a wonderful shopping experience, a beautiful product or a work of art.
Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayón is a good example of someone who has managed to remain true to his beliefs and also turn a profit at the same time.
