If you ask someone what his or her favorite fashion basic is, you will almost certainly get an obvious response. It could be that pair of jeans purchased in every wash, or the t-shirt washed so many times it feels like a second skin, maybe those pink Chucks you refuse to pitch even though they’re old and moldy. Ask people this question and bet they will forget to mention their unmentionables. Not many acknowledge the foundation of the clothes they wear every day- underwear. But at Freshpair.com, they not only recognize the importance of skivvies, they celebrate them every year at National Underwear Day.

The event, usually held in Times Square, was moved indoors this year to the fabulous venue Espace. The room was full of New York’s finest- all pretending not to ogle the showcases of models, scantily clad in brands such as 3G and Baskit. Attention turned to a cube-like, whitewashed runway in the center of the room as President of Freshpair Michael Kleinmann spoke about the event’s significance when he said, “underwear is the first thing we put on in the morning, and the last thing we take off at night.” The night’s hostess, Lydia Hearst, commenced the evening’s runway shows. Models strutted down the runway in some of Freshpair’s top brands like Wacoal, 2xist and Diesel. Everything from boxer shorts to garter belts worn with hot pink boxing gloves stole the attention of the 500-some guests in attendance. Tyson Beckford made an appearance with his son and stole the interest of every eyeball in the room as he wrapped up the runway show. Reality TV royalty like Ben from “Make Me a Supermodel” and Alex McCord with husband Simon van Kempen from “The Real Housewives of New York City” blended well with the youthful crowd.

The best tiding Freshpair left with its attendees is that underwear is fashionable and can be much more than a basic necessity. From now on, I am positively thinking twice when someone asks me what my must-have fashion pieces are. I’m pretty sure that Wacoal bras and Diesel boy shorts have permanently made the list.
