FutureFashion LA

It’s not often that you see politics and fashion mingling over fruity cocktails and ’80s music, but that was exactly the scene last night at LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s mansion. For a few hours, at least, his lawn was host to FutureFashion LA, an exhibition sponsored by the CFDA and D&A showcasing 17 eco-conscious garments crafted by the likes of Trovata, Trina Turk, VPL and Imitation.
For the most part, the pieces were just about what you’d expect under the banner of eco-fashion—lots of knits, lots of silks and cottons, and a whole lot of neutrals. Each designer worked with sustainable textiles donated by Earth Pledge, with highlights including a nubby navy top with massive kimono sleeves by VPL, an eco-bikini by Skin, a sexy organic jersey LBD by Imitation and Trina Turk’s trench and pleat-front shift combo—which, aside from the lack of neon, looked as though it could have come straight from her main line.
The most interesting look of the night—if the least wearable—was by Rozae Nichols, incorporating a top made of clear paillettes and a neon-yellow quilted vest filled with hemp. However, the real pièces de résistance were the chunky necklaces and bracelets accessorizing each outfit. Designed by Nola Singer, Pepita and Thea Grant, each one was crafted from vintage and recycled materials and added the color that was lacking from most of the garments themselves.
