A collective gay gasp sprang up around the interwebs today. Barbra Streisand, multi-hyphenate and multi-award-winner, is “deep in negotiations” to not only direct and produce but also star in a new film version of Gypsy as the stage mother to end all stage mothers, Mama Rose.

I Just Died: The Barbra Streisand Edition

Babs has some big, Tony-winning shoes to fill if she’s stepping into the same support hose as Ethel Merman, Angie Lansbury and the most recent showstopper, Patti Lupone.

But then again we’re talking about Barbra “Bigfoot Ain’t Got Nothin’ on Me” Streisand.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story, Gypsy is a musical written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim about the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque performer whose mother, Mama Rose, bullies her daughter’s way into stardom.

Arthur Laurents, now 92 years young, is notoriously picky about the character but has given Barbra his blessing, saying:

“[Babs] had a mother who she always thought was Mama Rose. I don’t want to get into the details, but the point is she knows. She’s got it in her. She’s going to be much more than people expect.”

It’s Barbra’s turn.

Barbra’s talkin’ loud! Barbra’s doin’ fine! Barbra’s gettin’ hot! Barbra? Barbra?

Meanwhile, who should play Gypsy Rose Lee…

Lea Michele can you hear meeeeeeeeee?

I was center square from 1969 to 1978, during which I perfected the art of the zing as well as a crippling cocaine addiction. Bea Arthur was responsible for both. @LesFabian lester at fashionindie.com
