1391: The year Queen Isabella of Bavaria gave a life-size doll to Queen Ann of Bohemia so Anne could see the clothes on a human form. Later called “model dolls”, they became popular gifts and tools for designers.

1848: Estimated year Charles Frederick Worth asked Marie Vernet, a shop girl he worked with in a store in Paris, to demonstrate how shawls should be worn. Vernet became the first live model-and subsequently, Worth’s wife.

10: Years later Worth opened the first couture house is Paris employing a team of models to try on clothes.

1914: Year Vogue editor Edna Woolman Chase asked American designers to stage fashion shows when World War I kept the fashion press away from Paris.

1 million: Estimated number of people who saw fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert’s brainchild, a fashion show featuring American designer’s works at the 1965 New York World’s Fair.

100: Lambert’s age when she attended the last fashion show, in 2003.
