INTERVIEW: Jonny Makeup, Fashion It Boy/Songwriter

Fashion it boy, Jonny Makeup has graced the seats of fashion week from London’s front row at Jeremy Scott to Galliano in Paris. In the public eye, Jonny is commonly known for his social position which includes his bff status with Jeremy Scott, Leigh Lezark, and Peaches Geldof! He’s way more than that. Makeup is a song-writer, walking billboard for American Apparel, and a part-time stylist.

Jonny Makeup: It’s my first night in since Coachella.

Alex Kazemi: I just saw some of your friends on TMZ.

Jonny: I’d rather watch Entertainment Tonight. It was religiously watched when I was a child. By watching ET I knew I was gay and I knew it was my fate.

Kazemi: My dream is to be a MTV VJ.

Jonny: Were you alive when they did the MTV VJ competitions “Who wants to be our next VJ”

Kazemi: No, but I wish I could participate. Let’s begin! When did you decide you were going to become a musician?

Jonny: I never really decided. Growing up, my father played the guitar and performed in the local bars. He always wanted to teach me to play. I was such a brat, that I would only do it if he bought me the Courtney Love designed Stratocaster. He said no so I never learned! It wasn’t till years later that I started a gay rap group as a joke. I would say I’m more of a songwriter than a musician. I work with this dude Cory Enemy.

Kazemi: I saw some stuff about him in your tweets. You guys did a song with Steve Aoki?

Jonny: Yes, I worked with Steve recently. I’m not singing though. I helped him write a song for another artist.

Kazemi: Who would that be? What did you write about?

Jonny: I wrote for the lovely yet complex talent of Ms. Sky Ferreira, mostly about social commentary.

Kazemi: She sounds cool. I’ll definitely check her out. What does the name “VIP Boys” mean to you?

Jonny: My past.

Kazemi: On the topic of your musical past, when did you first meet Gravy Train? When did you decide you were going to collaborate?

Jonny: We did a show with them in Philly. Long story short, I was planning on pulling some major pranks on Hunx because he flirted with a boy I like on a prior Gravy Train tour. When I met them all, you know when you meet someone and you can tell off the bat that you are cut from the same cloth, that’s how we started touring/working together.

Kazemi: It’s amazing what chemistry can do. When did the collaboration with American Apparel occur?

Jonny: Well, after VIP broke up on Tyra, I called Dov and told him I was ready to come back to work. A few days later I was on a plane to a trade show and the rest is history.

Kazemi: Sounds crazy. What is the biggest misconception about you?

Jonny: I know people think that I’m just some fame hungry uber gay party boy. There is some truth to that last sentence, I’m not going to lie, but people neglect to notice my work as a good old fashion grassroots lobbyist. I get a lot of slack from sites like Queerty, which is fine because I love the attention even if they are making fun of me. I wouldn’t do what I do if I didn’t. Whenever something turns up in the press about me, nobody ever mentions my involvement with the Human Rights Campaign or how I helped launch American Apparel’s Legalize Gay Campaign. At the end of the day, I’m still just a lunch box totin’ Gay Rights screamin’ Bikini Kill listenin’ Riot Girl hooker with a heart of gold! I am also a very clever song writer.

Kazemi: I know you are! What do you dream to do in the pop music industry?

Jonny: My dream in to be a pop performer. I realized after living in Hollywood for a few years that writing pop music is where the money at!

Kazemi: Would you ever write a song for Britney Spears?

Jonny: I would play the spoons naked to feed Brit Brit and her kids if she asked!

Kazemi: As would I. I miss her shaved head; it totally would fit into the era of where the fashion industry is right now “GRUNGE”.

Jonny: Well, I love Agnes but remember that Brit started it.

Kazemi: Brit is an icon. Speaking of fashion and icons, what’s your favorite item from your Jeremy Scott items in your closet?

Jonny: I will have to say my Fry Guy sweater since it is such a collector’s item.

Kazemi: I love that collection, oh, 2007 the time of when Kanye West rapped and Cory Kennedy was semi-relevant.

Jonny: Now now Alex, people have comebacks and reinventions and take breaks.

Kazemi: Yeah, but she has been on a break for a long time. What are some of your favorite shows while attending Fashion Week?

Jonny: The House of Jeremy Scott of course! It’s also fun when Mr. Galliano asks me to drop by!

Kazemi: Is Jeremy like a brother/boyfriend/dad figure to you?

Jonny: Totes the big brother and I know I say the word BFF a lot but he’s my guy BFF hands down. It’s so crazy.
I’ve never had a person look out for me like he does and sometimes I think he knows me better than I know myself. I know that cliché, but it’s so crazy when you are on that level with someone. Don’t get me wrong, he teases me a lot and makes fun of me, I guess that’s the big bro part, you should ask him to do his impression of me, it’s DEAD ON, if I like a boy and don’t know what I should say he will totally get on the phone and have the convo for me and it works every time! Oh yeah, and I always say that I wouldn’t be able to do “Hollywood” if I didn’t have him and it’s so true.

Kazemi: I do a great impression of you too not going to lie, you can even ask Kristin, but you’re lucky to have him in your life, IT’S FATE!  If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, where would you be?

Jonny: YES! I always told Hunx that if all else fails, I’m moving to San Fran and opening up a dog/cat grooming salon next to his hair salon!

Kazemi: Stop, how’s he?

Jonny: I love him so much! I would not be able to live alone! He was such a heaven sent!

Kazemi: He kind of reminds me of Cat Bad Romance.

Jonny: He so is! I wonder if they are related!

Kazemi:
Could you imagine your cat is long lost cousins with Gaga’s cat. Do you even like Gaga?

Jonny: Yes I do! I LOVE her! I love what she’s doing! She hands down won me over!

Kazemi: I like her producers and her music but I prefer Britney as the pop princess. Gaga can be Madonna and Britney’s child. She could be like the pregnancy from the 2003 VMA performance.

Jonny: So Good!

Kazemi: Haha. Back to fashion icon Jeremy Scott.  Would you ever collaborate with him? Let’s say designing a shirt for a future collection?

Jonny: I would collaborate with The House of Jeremy Scott with ANYTHING they asked of me!

Kazemi: Maybe you could even style a shoot together. A lot of people don’t know you’re a stylist. When/how did you become a stylist? Can you give us some insight on an upcoming shoot you’re doing?

Jonny: I would say I’m a tastemaker, not a stylist. Right now my big project is Holly Madison.

Thank you Jonny.
