The first 3/4 of Christian Siriano‘s Fall 2011 collection was done almost entirely in black and charcoal grey, creating a somber atmosphere but also striking a different tone from seasons past. One could finally imagine the type of woman — and she’s not necessarily a girl — the diminutive designer is trying to dress. His woman, much like the designer, is growing up.

Marked Maturity at Christian Siriano

That is not to say that Christian Siriano will soon be dressing dowagers and divorcees. There was still a lot of playfulness and even a mature sensuality to the clothes, particularly in the number of sheer blouses that popped up from time to time.

The black of those first 24 looks subtly transitioned into a moss and then mauve palette as the collection transitioned from day to night. Known for his fantastical finale gowns, there was also a demonstrated restraint in this area.

Two very pretty tulle gowns were followed by a smart closer: a silk charcoal chiffon short sleeve blouse paired with a mauve silk organza ruffled skirt. Sexy and sophisticated with a good dose of whimsy, this finale look might have seemed a bit out of place but it was the best kind of surprise — unexpected, but completely welcomed.

Much like the show itself.

I was center square from 1969 to 1978, during which I perfected the art of the zing as well as a crippling cocaine addiction. Bea Arthur was responsible for both. @LesFabian lester at fashionindie.com
