RUNWAY RUNDOWN Marc Jacobs Cruise 2009
I feel like such a sell-out as I’m writing this because I’m sitting here in a Marc Jacobs t-shirt. I just went to Meijer in Cincinnati to get some juice for this weekend’s detox (it’s fixin’ to be epic, y’all), and that is what I wore. No makeup and bedhead, but I somehow felt super-chic just running up to the grocery in Midwest America. What is it about Jacobs that commands that kind of awe-inspiring power and devotion over an entire generation of young, stylish women? Why do his creations cause such rabid fanaticism among millions of fashionistas? There’s that certain something that we can’t really put our fingers on, but we can’t wait to get our mitts on his latest looks–and this Resort collection is no exception.
Patterns and prints, of course, are the hallmark of any Jacobs’ collection as well as any resort collection, and there was a wild variety of influences on Jacobs’ aesthetic this go round: Palm Beach retiree chic, a dash of Asian invasion, and the constant 80’s NY pop references with a dash of grunge that permeates everything Jacobs touches. Some of the prints throughout the collection were a smidge eyebleed, but in other cases, such as the cheeky parakeet wrap dress and the oversized floral print, lend that graphic edge to Jacobs’ eternally young and tragically hip too hip for your own good mentality. And you already know how I feel about leather jackets with ladylike dresses, plus the color scheme on the first look is pretty intriguing, especially for a summer evening out and about.
