11 Scintillating Summer Scents
Jul 06, 2011 - by Jessica Lapidos
Summertime, and the living's easy, yet a little bit sweaty, too. But you're a lady, and thus you always smell like angel dust. That being said, a new summer fragrance is in order. A light breath of fresh air, if you will. Well we did, and we turned up our noses at dozens of perfumes at The Fashion Indie Scent Lab, i.e. our collective desk, to bring you the most scintillating scents of the summer.
*Editor's pick* Givenchy's Ange ou Demon is the new perfume of intrigue and was made to give a jasmine tea effect. Rather it gave indie editor Amanda @crystlmeatballs wild visuals of "gummy bears wearing caged crinolines". @Mcarthurjoseph's favorite lady scent, too? Mmm intriguing indeed.
L'eau par Kenzo is the essence of water with a touch of muted mint that picks up with fresh sweet pepper. Perfect beachside.
This eau fraiche Flora by Gucci is like waking up in the countryside to a dewy and sun-shining morning. Base notes of sandalwood uphold rose, osmanthus and crunchy greens.
Philosophy's Eternal Grace has the most subtle effect. With just a touch of citrus and delicate florals, it has the essence of fresh linens. Does perfume ever give you a migrane? This might be the perfume to try.
With such summer fruits like watermelon and orange wafting through Chloé over a base of sandalwood and iris, the effect is lifting yet slightly mysterious. Indie intern Maria @marrpass swears by it.
*Editor's Pick* Un Jardin Sur le Toit by Hermes is our own Editor-in-Chief's favorite for summer, and also happens to be for both men and women. As Sam @iamsamlim says, "It smells like you're in the middle of a garden," which is a universally beloved place to be. With grassy undertones and a hint of orchard, the scent builds and lasts.
This super soft scent runs light with rose, lily, and orange flowers. L'eau D'Issey Florale is the delicate femininity of an earlier era bottled.
One could call Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh "sunshine spray" and be accurate. It's all the brightness of summer fruitiness, and its slight base notes of musk keep it from any hint of tropical drink.
DKNY Golden Delicious indeed. The sweet apple has a tang that is brought on by orange flower water, and essences of musk, sandalwood, teakwood and other flowers enhance the deliciousness.
As exotic as Donatella herself, Versace Bright Crystal is a sensuous mix of chilled yuzu, pomegranate, lotus flower, and various flora you mightn't've ever heard of.
*Editors' Pick* Yes that's right, editors, plural, have chosen this as the one. Both Lester @LesFabian, and I @JessicaLapidos agree that Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb is the bona fide aroma of a Lady. Over a base of Patchouli (a true lady is obviously part hippie) lies sambac jasmine, ballerina freesia, cattleya orchid and centifolia rose. The finish is perfectly smooth with slight overtones of feist.
