90s STYLE WEEK: Saturday-Morning Cartoon Kitsch
Aug 16, 2012 - by Melissa Hebin
Tonight is the FashionIndie 90s Party, and were chomping at the bit to loosen our shoelaces and cut off our sleeves. It was a time when side parts were out of place, and cartoons were at an all-time high. Today, were taking you on a stroll through memory lane to outfit you in some Saturday-morning nostalgia.
Remember when kids shows could also be enjoyed by parents? We dont know about you guys, but we learned some of our most important life lessons from the wise words of Doug Funnie and Arnold whats his last name?
Nowadays, most kids shows are one of two things:
1. Half-assed, formulaic cartoons (except you, Spongebob stoners the world over adore you);
2. Obnoxious, screechy live-action shows featuring kids whose hair is too perfect to be true. Dont believe us? Turn on Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel. They all have that immaculate, moussed-up, wavy side-sweep. Style your stars with some variety, for Petes sake!
To sum it up, theres a timeless quality about 90s cartoons that we remember fondly into our adult years. And since fashion is cyclical, those elements come back in fresh ways. We scoured the retroverse to find some of the best examples of old-skool cartoon styles that you can rock with some ironic flair as an adult.
