Although he was born in England, Charles Wilson Brega James is often referred to as America's first couturier. The son of a British officer and an American socialite from Chicago, Charles James built a reputation as one of the finest couturiers of the 20th century, but his personal demons and exacting temperament proved his ultimate undoing.
