Do it Yourself Runway Hair: Fishtail Braid

Jun 08, 2011 - by Megan Turley

Judging by my stifling morning subway ride, summer is definitely here. For us long-haired goddesses, with hot temperatures and humid heat comes frizz, frizz, frizz. Beat the heat and your hair into submission by putting a twist into your daily routine with one of summer's hottest trends for hair - the fishtail braid.

Making appearances in Missoni, Roberto Cavalli and Prada shows, the fishtail is a fresh, fashionable take on summer plaits. It'll push your hair out of your face and into the spotlight!

Here's how to do it yourself, demonstrated by yours truly and my handy MacBook Photobooth app:

Step 1: Separate your hair into two parts. You can do this as a side-braid (as I am doing), or a braid down your back, but you might want to try it on the side first so you get the hang of it and know how it should look.

Step 2: Separate about a half inch of hair (the smaller the piece, the more the braid will look like a fish tail) out of one of the sections, and pull it over to the other section.  Pull the hair from underneath the section when you cross over to get that scaly look.

Step 3: Combine the piece with the new section, then separate about the same amount from this new section and pull it over to the old section.

Step 4: Repeat. It may take a few repetitions for the pattern to appear, so don't get discouraged if at first you can't see it!

Voilà ! A perfect summer style in under five minutes!
