INTERVIEW: Blogger Karla Derass from Karla's Closet
Mar 30, 2010 - by Annabelle Cheesecake, Parisian Princess
Resident street hero Karla, of Karla's Closet, has become famous for her creative styling choices and interesting ensembles. She's usually seen wearing oversized blazers, fun patterned tops, and colorful accessories. We chatted with the fashion student about her future plans, love of pb&j, and goals of coming out to NYC.
What made you start the blog?
I was bored and had been obsessively bookmarking and reading a few blogs like Style Bubble and Face Hunter, so I figured I might as well start my own!
What is your favorite perk?
I've learned tons about social media and the fashion industry.
What is the best advice you can give someone who wants to start a fashion blog?
Blog about whatever your heart desires, try to build a readership by linking others and vice versa, and provide fresh content at least once or twice a week.
What are your future projects?
Have a couple in the works...
What is your typical day?
Normally I eat a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for breakfast, stare at my iMac computer screen for about an hour, and then some days I have class to attend and other days I have to go out and find new merchandise for the shop or ship items that were purchased.
Why did you choose FIDM?
I wasn't looking to be a fashion designer, I was just really interested in the business aspect of the fashion industry and FIDM was the only school I knew that had an apparel manufacturing program.
You're studying Apparel Manufacturing, are you planning a career in fashion? If so, what is your dream job?
Yes! I would love to own a manufacturing company one day... and a mexican restaurant too.
You have been deemed a 'style blogger'. What sets you apart from the 'others?'
Perhaps the fact that I tend to say exactly what I'm thinking, but it's not always a good thing! Honestly though, every blog is different from one another- whether it's the writing style, photo formatting, etc.
Why did you cut your hair?
Had been contemplating it for some time so then one afternoon I googled photos of Anja Rubik and decided to take the plunge.
Any plans on moving out to NYC?
That would be amazing if I could! Maybe one day...
Where do you get the money to buy designer clothes?
Do you attend LA Fashion Week? Why haven't we seen you at NY Fashion Week?
Never been to LA Fashion Week, but I went to NYFW last September for a few days...don't think I could last a whole week though, too much fashion can become a bit overwhelming after awhile.
What would you change about yourself?
Wish I could learn to be more patient.
What is your favorite fragrance/perfume?
Yves Saint Lauren Parisienne perfume.
Pick 5 people, dead or alive, to have dinner with.
Jacqueline De Ribes, Idris Elba, Audrey Hepburn, Carrie Bradshaw, and Jesus.
Would you consider being photographed by Terry Richardson?
Haha!! Judging by what I've heard about him lately, probably not!
Tell us something we don't know about you.
I don't know how to cook, nor do I have the desire to learn.
