It's all Chic Asians and Hells Angels at Mount Rushmore

Aug 21, 2012 - by Jessica Lapidos

Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt looked out upon a throng of sharply dressed Asian tourists and ruff ridin' Harley Davidson dudes when we visited Mount Rushmore on the great INDIExUS Road Trip. Find out why.

We don't have to ask ourselves why cool Chinese tourist families go to see Mount Rushmore, but we were slightly curious as to why so many hardcore crotch-rocketers were out to see the Forefathers on that idle Tuesday.

It's not that South Dakota has an especially hefty motorcycling population, as Co-Pilot Tom and I originally postulated. (Aww, it's like when hipsters ride around together on their [our] bikes in Brooklyn!) Not exactly.  Turns out, it was the first day of Sturgis, the world's largest Motorcycle Rally was kicking off that day, just 30 miles north of Mount Rushmore.

With my high-power zoom in hand not trying to get too close I snapped some Harley (and Asian) realness in the South Dakotan sun, and the shade of presidents past.
