Twitter Protests Kate Moss & Naomi Campbell in Alexander McQueen at the London Olympics

Aug 12, 2012 - by Samantha Lim

Supermodel style icons Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell strutted their stuff in Alexander McQueen couture at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremonies.  Although they looked seriously radiant, when you have one supermodel known for drug abuse and another supermodel known for violent outbursts, both performing at the Olympics, you're just asking for some controversy.

People immediately took to Twitter saying things like:

"I suspect Kate Moss might fail her drug test later" (@PiersMorgan)

"Naomi Campbell gets a gold medal in phone throwing" (@jojomoyes)

"Kate Moss at the Olympics. It's like a who's who of Britain's greatest drug abusers" (@HelenNJT)

"Ah yes, Kate Moss, coke sniffing smackheads at the #closingceremony, they sure know how to inspire a generation. Great role models here." (@SinbadBrookie)

"A fortnight of celebrating drug free, hard working role models. The #closingceremony is being, lets say, slightly less picky." (@Martin_Lewis)

"Olympics against drugs, so they invite George Michael, Russell Brand & Kate Moss to # closingceremony & parade them in front of athletes" (@ajadnazir)

We get that the Olympics defines the benefits of living a healthy, goal oriented lifestyle, so putting up a slew of rail thin  models with controversial backgrounds may seem a bit confusing.  But at the end of the day, the runway show was intended to be an ode to influential British designers who have created incredible fashion, shown off by British models that have become exceptional in their field.  It was not a nod of approval towards drugs and eating disorders.

We asked our feline fashion legend, Choupette Lagerfeld (Karl wasn't available) what she thought of all the controversy and she defended the models telling us "I stand by my Kate and Naomi, we go way back and when you're as fabulous as us, the jealousy brews unnecessarily".  Gotta love that little cat.  Whatever your opinion, you can't deny that the gold dresses are incredible.  Flip through some of our favorite images below, and let us know what you think.
