You Never Forget Your First Time

Dec 03, 2012 - by Fashion Indie

I remember my first time.

Mr. Saynt and I were in month three of our love story, and I was sitting on his couch in the Bronx watching him work on Fashion Indie.

I leaned over, and asked if I could do anything to help.  He said yes. A few moments later, he handed me his computer, looked at me, and said "write something interesting."  It's been almost five years since I wrote my first article for Indie. Within a few weeks of my first article, I  took over as Editor-in-Chief, which honestly wasn't too hard considering it was only the two of us at the time.

I often joke that I slept my way to the top, people rarely laugh.

Within a few months, we hired on a team of writers, and were competing with the likes of Refinery29 as one of the most read fashion news blogs on the web.

That was a long time ago and since then a lot of things have changed. Personal style and lifestyle bloggers like Leandra from ManRepeller are now running the game. It's more about personal style and compelling stories than reporting the news or regurgitating a press release.

I'm now sitting here now overjoyed (and slightly overwhelmed) to regain my position. My first day back after a two year hiatus feels as if not a day had passed.  The structure of content moving forward will dramatically change, showcasing more original content developed by me and Mr. Saynt.  We'll still run recaps on what's happening on in fashion, so we don't forget the things that kept you here for so long, but we plan to elevate some of the content, attracting a new type of alpha bitch, a girl who's not afraid of a little trouble.

Each day will focus on one theme addressed in my Editors Letter. Today is all about firsts, so I've compiled a list of designers first time in Vogue, my first Reed Krakoff bag, and a sneak preview at my first interview as EIC of Fashion Indie (preview image above).

Below, a few of the firsts I enjoyed during my first time as EIC.

At my first fashion event at the John Varvatos store in Soho.

First day at my first international fashion week in Valencia, Spain.

My first time in LA, after shooting my first on air segment for the Style Network.

At my first Editors Preview event at the Christian Louboutin flagship.

My first photoshoot for my first personal blog, BecaAlexander.com, which I started after selling Indie, the first time.

At my first industry wedding wearing my first Ports 1961 gown, I've been addicted to the brand since.
