Nowadays everything has gone green. Yet, who knew an 80 year old invention would come back to revolutionize Aunt Flows monthly visits all while being mindful of the environment?
The DivaCup is a latex free, silicone menstrual cup designed by Diva International Inc. to provide women with an environmentally safe alternate to tampons and pads. Not only is it environmentally beneficial, but an economic check plus.
On average, an estimated 12 billion sanitary pads and 7 billion tampons are dumped into the North American environment each year, according to 1998 statistics found on Divacup.com. Its been shown that most tampons and pads contain surfactants, adhesives and additives. Most pads contain polyethylene plastic whose production is a pollutant. In addition, dioxin, a known carcinogen, is a by-product of the bleaching process of tampons containing rayon. All of these pollutants end up in the environment by way of groundwater and other water ways leading to major pollution and health concerns.
Hence, the DivaCup was created back in 2003 by Francine and Carinne Chambers, to curb that pollution. The mother-daughter duo teamed up to provide women a cost-efficient way to partake in the eco-movement.
Not every woman can afford a hybrid car nor easily convert their home to solar power, says Carinne, on Divacup.com. Yet, by choosing to use a menstrual cup instead of disposable tampons and pads, any woman is able to make an environmentally responsible choice each month.
The bisphenol (BPA) and plastic free cup comes in two sizes model 1 is smaller than model 2 and the latter is recommended for women over 30 years old. It can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for use for an additional 12 hours. The makers suggest it be used for light or moderate flows, however, for heavier flows it should be emptied more often. It has a comfortable design, making it comfortable to use during intense movements like sports or the calm of sleep.
