Simon Doonan has been called many things in his life. "The fox-crazy impresario of Barneys notorious windows? True. Gay? Definitely. Style Icon? Yes, but he's not quite sure that's accurate. "I read a column once where they called me a style icon and thought they were out of their minds thinking no one wants to look like me. I think there are several types of style icons." Please allow Mr. Doonan to explain:
You have HIGH FASHION ICONS like Daphne Guinness and Tilda Swinton, the muses.
"Then you have POPULAR STYLE ICONS like Paris Hilton. Just look at how many girls dyed their hair blonde carried a purse and a little Chihuahua. Note, I did not say the word fashion, but she is a style icon, shes in pop culture, not high fashion. Kim Kardashian is a style icon, hair, boobs, Hervé Léger dress, eyelashes glued on; you see that look everywhere. Those women that are popular style icons have massive influence on people. Its not sophisticated, it just is what it is."
"Then there are celebrity style icons who are like RED CARPET PEOPLE who wear fashion, they dont design it or pick it out, they arent rule breaking."
"Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj are all three. Lady Gaga is so incredible, shes miraculously in all the different categories and not everyone can manage that. Young little girls will buy the same nail polish, they are so playful with their style. Its very liberating and I think that it is a delight. When you look at lady gaga the reference that she makes are all the way back to cabaret Voltaire, shes cherry picking all of them and shes probably influenced by a lot of different things but shes obviously a post modern person that is mashing them all up."
"Im not a fashion icon, I dont know what I am." Simon Doonan, you're you and you're fabulous. There must be an underground gaggle of fierce gays out there that must consider you their style icon.
