The Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council on behalf of the global Rastafari community strongly condemns the “Canal Zone” exhibit of Mr. Richard Prince recently and his accompanying “Canal Zone” book, which distort and misrepresent photographs of Rastafarians taken in Jamaica.

The exhibit includes photographs juxtaposed with lewd pictures of naked white women in a manner that defames the Rastafari brethren and sistren photographed, some of whom are among the Elders of Our Faith. The exhibit therefore subjects a minority and historically marginalized and exploited community, which has over the past 80 years fought hard for its collective good reputation enjoyed today, to ridicule, contempt, discrimination and further abuse. Mr. Prince has abused his freedom of expression at the expense of a vulnerable, peaceful, spiritual community and the global Rastafari community will NOT tolerate it.

The Rastafari community as a whole and each member of the Rastafari community are hapless victims of Mr. Prince’s reckless ‘artistic’ and parasitic exhibit. Mr. Prince’s works are disrespectful and derogatory of the Rastafari culture and community and created without the consent of members of the community.

The Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council therefore demands the immediate and permanent cancellation of Mr. Richard Prince’s “Canal Zone” exhibit and the immediate and permanent withdrawal of Mr. Richard Prince’s accompanying “Canal Zone” book from circulation and display.
