Often pegged as the “space guy,” Gareth Pugh took his sky high fashions and brought them underground for Fall 2009. With an earthy, almost devilishly sinister energy, Pugh opted for a haunting video presentation instead of the usual runway performance. In many cases, a video presentation is the economic, yet lazy, way of showing off a collection. Pugh Fall 2009, however, actually wouldn’t have been as awe inspiring and effective if it weren’t for the video! The collection was voluminous. Billowing high waisted pants draped over heels, hitting the floor (hello Trendspark!). Cape-like coats, jackets and dresses defied gravity, floating through the air effortlessly. Bringing the collection back to it’s earthly origin, Pugh included several sweaters and dresses bearing fine spikes and piercing fur, a sure sign that some sort of demonic underworld creature was making his runway debut. Oh Gareth, you never cease to amaze me.
