Sex and the City turns Vogue
WWD has reported that Sarah Jessica Parker will have a whopping 81 costume changes in the “Sex and the City” movie, the most in cinematic history.
“To the well-trained, high-fashion eye, Carrie’s 81 costume changes make up perhaps the most metaphorical wardrobe in cinematic history. For half of the film she comes off as a polished, uberfashionable grown-up; the other half, she’s the quirky, experimental fashion trailblazer/victim. Polished Carrie is done up head-to-toe in resort and spring 2008 trends: florals, like a gem-studded YSL sack dress, and full-skirted frocks made a little edgy with a studded black leather belt — even studs have gone uptown. It’s hard to find fault with any of these looks — most were featured in every fashion glossy out there last season. They’re intentionally perfect — too perfect for the sake of the plot.”
I agree, as much as we loved the show for the drama, we also watched it for the fashion. And the movie will be no different. The problem is that the entire thing seems just like a Vogue magazine, where there are 81 pages of ads and two pages of content. So was the movie written around the clothes or are the clothes sitting backseat to the plot? I mean, who in NYC dresses like that, and are we, the audience, supposed to be able to afford the outfits and go out and buy them after the movie?
