Sneak Peak: Alexandre Herchcovitch

Along with designing Bandaid’s,  Alexandre Herchcovitch showcased his S/S collection reclaiming his territory on the runways of São Paulo Fashion Week.

Herchcovitch’s menswear collection married tapestry print designs with references to Indian embellishment, as seen in t-shirts almost entirely covered in embroidery. The heavy use of prints was a theme throughout, with modern camouflages, baroque jacquards and his signature skulls all coming down the runway. Though the looks were modernized by flamboyant blazers and sweaters accessorized with patterned scarves, the profusion of jodhpurs and tunic-like shirts with pleated skirts gave the overall collection a slightly Arabian air.

Herchcovitch’s women’s collection drew on similar themes, using a softer tone. As if collaging, the designer juxtaposed tough military references, evident in structured shoulder and pocket details, with sheer fabrics, floral prints and feminine details such as opulent cascading frills, ruffled hems and embroidery.

According to Herchcovitch, both collections were inspired by—and meant to call attention to—conflicts around the world. But, from another perspective, they seemed to signal victory on a more personal level for the embattled designer, who seems to finally be moving beyond the conflicts of the past few months.

Was completely impressed with his Fall 08 show which I saw at Bryant Park, yet this collection has me totally in awe. Too many prints, juxtaposed with oversized shapes and unstructured, untailored garments. Not at all to my liking.
