RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Jason Wu Spring Summer 2010

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Jason Wu Spring Summer 2010 emerging fashion

The first ladies go to designer created a collection that was vibrant, young and perfect for Capital Hill.

Jason Wu is only 26 years old, y’all, and his designs have already adorned our Fabulous First Lady so far this year. That’s saying something, not only about Shelly O’s impeccable and yet relatable style, but also about Wu’s transcendent ability to design clothes for First Ladies and Worker Bee Cube Dwellers, It Girls and Philanthropists. While much of NYC S/S 2010 is shaping up to be utterly bland and dismal, Wu has given us some bright spots of color and some fun flashes of metallic flair that should firmly cement his place as one of America’s top new hottest names in young, fresh, vibrant fashion.

While many of his day looks were clearly designed with more conservative Washingtonian wearers in mind, his evening dresses were spot-on in capturing that elusive vintage allure with a modern edge that has become so uniquely Wu. First and foremost, I ADORE that raglan-sleeved dress with the sheer seams–the texture looks wonderfully slubby and the shape and silouhette are classic Girl Next Door with sophisticated twist. You could wear that to a sock hop or a State Dinner and be equally comfortable and chic. Of course the bright polka dots and their gorgeous draped elements are so fun and chic, but I’m more impressed by the vivid painterly pattern that appeared on a number of pieces throughout the collection. I love the deep navy against the hot pink and the low neckline paired with the full skirt makes things sexy and interesting without getting into slutty territory. And what’s more, the headgear is pretty much perfect here, where usually it so often tagged on as an afterthought–both the sheer tulle pieces and the feathered toppers are a wonderful New Look/Lady Who Lunches references that’s been refreshed for a whole new group of accessory whores to lust after.
